Weird thing is, I know a couple of XR people and they are good people and cool as well. I even considered getting involved at some point because of that. However I was put off by the whole thing veering on the edge of being performance art at times. Well, that and the whole thing with getting arrested on purpose (can't afford that under circumstances, unfortunately, plus getting arrested is kinda dumb, it seems to me)

nurmie posted:I suppose the idea was to make it sound urgent, casual and "anti-political" or something. The result being a drunken pub rant is 100% on the money. Yes quite a few people in my town are XR supporters etc. They're good people - many of the 'Yummy Mummy' type. There was a big BLM protest/demo in town a couple of Sundays ago which considering there are about 3 PoC in our whole town was very well attended (and 'socially distanced'). Problem is they all claim to be 'non political', a good third of the Town Council is represented by them but they're all adamant 'no politics at town council level' and god forbid any of them want to try for county council (they'll be terminated with extreme prejudice if they do). Every town council election the non-tory vote (2/3 of votes) is split between them and labour so the tories keep getting in. We did try locally to encourage our local party not to waste our financial and boots on the ground resources by competing over the 'dog poo vote' (top concern in the town is dog poo) which we were never going to win because Corbyn & Welsh Labour business rates (lack of understanding there about who was responsible for the 2017 business rates review) and because of a personal thing between our least reluctant 'standing for council' person & one of the YMs meaning the yummy mummies would compete fiercely in any ward in which she stood but our local CLP refused to even consider it. Sadly the 2 main local issues as far as they are concerned is about getting bridges built over one of the local rivers (there are already two from the same fields that take you into town High St from the fields about 10 mins walk apart and the relocation of the kids' playground dispute which has been going on for years, and you need the judgement of Solomon to resolve and frankly I don't give a fig about. There's a playground, it's been there decades since the 1950s, its near a big main road but is screened by trees and measurements of pollution round there come back low so I can think of better things to spend £90k on at town level. The issue bitterly divides the parents in the town so they're not even in agreement over it! Ed: sorry about the crap standard of my waffle here, I kept changing my mind how to express things and not amending appropriately. Other fun things about that hideously embarrassing XR party statement: - ‘Asians, queers, golfers and artists’ - what? - the mention of a family locked in their 23rd floor flat in a tower block being on fire. Why the gently caress would you put that in a post Grenfell world. - ‘there’s no time to wake you up with blowjobs’. Err, please don’t sexually assault me in my sleep even if you can find the time. This isn’t just a general XR thing and I’ve seen plenty of XR people disavow it. It’s Hallam’s newest project and him and his inner circle will no doubt continue to poo poo this nonsense out for a while yet, fuelled by his incredible narcissism.

Gonzo McFee posted:https://twitter.com/Squirrel69Red/status/1276937145903575040?s=19 This has kinda tripped my safety valve after all the smug, heartless bilge coming from the 'centre' over the past few days So disagreeing with the government is "the path of least resistance", is it? I know exactly where this sort of thing comes from - it's the centre's fetish for surrendering what little principles they actually have (or claim to have) on the altar of 'pragmatism' and 'tough decisions' - if they go against everything they've said and anything they've apparently believed it shows how non-ideological they are, because they can convince themselves that someone has convinced their rational big-brain that they were wrong. For instance - "We really wanted to abolish tuition fees but then we saw the books and it just wasn't possible, even though the Tories were willing to go along with it. See, it's not that we have no morals or principles and will do anything for power, it's that we just can't do what we promised for actual reasons" This means that believing in things, sticking to your guns and disagreeing with people is - somehow - the easy, lazy option because, as they see it, you're just parroting empty dogma like "Maybe we shouldn't send kids and teachers back to school while there's a pandemic on just to try and make the number go up", when the superior, morally difficult, clever thing to do is to just follow the government while putting all your mental energy into coming up with reasons why it was actually the right thing to do. gently caress 'em so very, very much.

Good to see the press is up in arms about the former prime minister literally unveiling a statue of a nazi who hailed hitler as good for the world because he'd finally solve "the jewish problem" at the same time they were savaging jeremy corbyn for being worse than hitler for liking a tweet.

If we had a PR voting system, the Labour party would be free to split into the Socialist Labour Party and the English Christian Democrats Party that would satisfy the requirements of the two main Labour factions. It's only FPTP that keeps these antagonistic groups perpetually fighting for control of the same party apparatus and it's such a drat waste of energy.

quote:At the time of the unveiling of the statue of Lady Astor, a spokesperson for Campaign Against Antisemitism said: “Nancy Astor was a trailblazer for women in politics, and in that respect it is fitting that her statue was unveiled by our second woman Prime Minister. However, Lady Astor also held appalling views on Jews and Nazi Germany. Therefore it is vital that context should be provided for passersby about not only her achievements but also her virulent antisemitism. Hopefully that will serve as a lesson that in our time we must not sacrifice our solidarity with a minority community for other priorities, however worthwhile.” also lol at the campaign against antisemitism failing to actually condemn a statue to a someone they acknowledge was a virulent antisemite

I had a private op in 2006 - NHS would have left me to die frankly "it's your age deary" (everything women get wrong with them supposedly being menstruation related - pre, post, during especially if you're around 40-60 (it's the menopause / hormones yadda yadda). I paid for a private scan (£600) which found the problem and work agreed to pay for me to have the necessary op (I wasn't in the health scheme as I wasn't far enough up the tree) - and all these bills kept arriving over the next 6 months - nearly £3k at the end - op took about 20 mins and I was in for 1 night. Thank god work was paying!
