I suspect the discussions between city officials and hospital administrators have gotten pretty bleak.

I'm totally cool with them mocking his disability, but not that one - the one where he's governing-challenged.

I mean it's really funny in a dark 'you're an evil sack of poo poo' kinda way that the disabled governor who was injured in a genuinely very sad accident he had no control over and was able to hold the guy who did it to him responsible has dedicated so much of his life to making sure literally no other disabled person can do the same. It's not really funny because he's disabled, though, it's funny because he's a ghoul.

https://www.tmc.edu/ If you go to the website they have an update. Yesterday, the TMC posted an incomplete slide deck in order to allow time to fully develop a number of new slides. The new slides as well as a number of updated slides that were absent yesterday will be released later today. Collectively, they will provide a more comprehensive and accurate description of the current status.

It still surprises me how barbaric our healthcare system is. And it never has to be, it's always a choice to maintain it like this. Because of course the hospital needs elective procedures to keep its profits up. And of course the people running the hospital are obligated to chase profit more than anything else, because that is the system that many people have fought long and hard to preserve, for decades at this point. And of course the hospital itself is genuinely at risk of not surviving, because there's been plenty of signs that if the hospitals can't remain solvent, the government won't be willing to bail them out. Disaster relief and aid has been denied in the past, and there's already been grumbles in the federal government against putting out another relief bill. And all of this is just the natural result of everything that's been done. People have spent millions of dollars for years and years to enshrine our current healthcare system; competent scientists and bureaucrats were already made into political rivals in order to insulate the party's hold on power against the damages their policies cause to the population at large and preserve the corrupt kleptocracy they use to consolidate power; half of the Republicans' brand is chasing after short-term economic boosts to the detriment of long term viability, so of course they would dismantle important infrastructure and then resist risking the economy for the sake of public health. This was definitely going to happen, it already did happen with other disasters, the government has voluntarily excised its ability to provide minimal protection to its citizens, and that's on top of law enforcement steadily becoming a military force to maintain the racial hierarchy instead of keeping people safe. Sorry for the , it just all comes at me at once sometimes.

Elective is a misleading word in terms of in practice. Pretty much every form of care short of something that pops out of trauma is filed under elective. Cancer treatments are almost always elective. Something like a microdiscectomy is almost always elective. Just anything you can think of, in medical terms, can pretty much be put off until a later time and is therefore elective. We used the word superelective (even though it has a scientific meaning, ugh) to cover things like boob jobs, knee replacements, dental implants, etc, just because there wasn't a broadly accepted medical distinction that was of any use, at least that I could find. I found that sort of odd, but I guess it makes sense medically because it's not a value judgement, so much as, "It can wait at all." vs. "It literally cannot wait." Not debating the nature of a private system, but the money distinction ends up being preventative care vs. more urgent care later on, typically. It's funny, though. It has become a national cultural trait. Like, sure, rich people have gold plated insurance, but at least among those I know, while they go more often than poor people because it's free, they still don't go to the doctor the way wealthy Asians do or something. If you're wealthy in Thailand, you go to the doctor at the drop of a hat and always get a bag of pills, heh. Not sure about different European countries, but the various national healthcare systems aren't beloved by the people in the countries I know of regardless of politics. Among my Swedish, French, German, English, etc, friends it's more like, "I mean thank Christ we're not the US, that's barbaric, but this still sucks." Australia and Canada are a bit more like us in one way - very spread out and distribution of care is a major issue. I worked on a telehealth thing down in Oz many years ago that was government incentivized because bush towns and even far flung suburbs there are like being on Mars when it comes to care. The nearest specialist for anything can be like hours away. Houston's a pretty good place to live for medical care, all things considered, just sucks that it's so stratified in economic terms. Also you have to lol at the TMC facilities being forcibly not for profit by charter due to the land grant, while like the head guy at MDA makes ##,###,### a year and has a driver or whatever. It's comical.
