Lol this is so poo poo. I wish I could believe in the narrative of SF parlaying a role in opposition into future electoral dominance, but the recent polling favourables for Leo have just made me completely apathetic about anything ever improving in this country

Been feeling bad about my SF votes lately, not only cos of Mr MMA bigot being welcomed back into the fold, not only cos they pissed about up North over abortion () but particularly because my local SF TD decided to try and drag Leo for liking girly music. poo poo boils my blood, you could go after him for so much already and it's always him being part Indian or him being gay. I'm a voter with a long memory though, I'll remember this next time and vote for.. uh the Greens and whatever name the Worker's Party have decided on that week I guess.

And they hosed up big time in Offaly, had two good councilors who spent a decade building up the grass roots. When it came time for an election they parachuted in a woman so they could point to their gender quota. Those two councilors quit and the person they put forth left the party over her anti-abortion stance. I don't think they had anyone to run in Offaly this year, I don't live there anymore but as far as I know they only put forward a Laois candidate due to what happened in Offaly. From what I gather, the amalgamation of so many differing polices means that the next government is going to be an absolute mess.

I have given green candidates my first preference twice in my life and both times they've won a seat and we've gotten a Fianna Fail Taoiseach. I'm starting to see a pattern.

I wonder how much of their election success was from #votelefttransferleft. Them giving us a Fianna Fail Taoiseach is a fairly big betrayal of that movement.

Arquinsiel posted:I'm interested to see what the left wing of the greens does now. Could trash the whole party. That radical minority youth/left wing of the Greens are a bit of an odd one. The Green Party in Ireland have always been somewhere between Fine Gael on bikes and Labour on bikes - ie never particularly radical or left wing, just slightly left of center - but with a big environmental focus obviously. Three quarters+ of their members voting in favour of this coalition backs that up too. Saoirse McHugh and co would be far more politically aligned with PBP or the SocDems. I'd imagine a good chunk of her 'wing' of the party, probably anywhere from 10-20% of the Green members, might move to PBP or the SocDems. But thats unlikely to make any difference to the party - they're into government for the next 5 years now. And its a government with quite a healthy majority - the 93 votes in favour of Martin today show how the rural independents are sown up as well - so it should last.

I feel like that's a common thread with green parties in this day and age, historically encompassing the whole weird run from "keep the village green (and white)" rural tories, outright blood and soil with emphasis on the soil psychopaths, to hippy dippy quinoa yoghurt types, but with the advent of the climate crisis being a huge generational issue there's a lot of firebrand eco-lefties looking for a home.

Yeah, our Green last year was way too young and inexperienced and fell apart towards the end. The PBP and SocDem were way better. Even Labour had a decent shot, but he didn't get in, but he got into the Seanad.

My missus is an Irish film and TV development person, and without doxxing, Paul Mescal is a definitely good egg and apparently much sounder and put together than I would have been at his age.
