I was talking to my mother over lunch today and she told me that she realized last night watching the news that it would be at least a year before she's able to see my sister and niece again because of the evilness of the President. And that realization hit her so hard she couldn't get to sleep until 3 am from the stress of it all. Cursing him and all his cronies and insane followers she seemed on the verge of tears.

We both live in Maryland, one of the few states with somewhat sane leadership, so are lucky enough to be in a state where cases are going down; but my sister lives in the blighted state of Georgia. That this entire situation is avoidable and is only happening because of the mulish Republican rejection of reality makes even more infuriating.

Just wanted to say I (and my mother) feel your pain. My sister is in Boston and is having her first child in August. My mom has been looking forward to this as she wants a grandkid more than anything in the world. However, we live in the blighted state of Arizona so there's no way my 70 year old mom is getting on a plane in early August. Especially since she will probably have to quarantine for 2 weeks once she got there. The only hope she has is maybe things will be ok-ish around December? But really who knows. But all this because my evil president and my evil governor decided to politicize a pandemic.

In the last month I've noticed places get more relaxed with distancing and cleaning and everything else. I am still wearing a mask out to any building or crowded area, and avoiding either save for necessity.

Other people? Mask use dropping significantly, large groups indoors from what I've seen here in Edmonton. And the bars! Big groups chilling out in crowded venues drinking, chatting, and laughing all night. My little sister went to an underground rave a week ago. The gently caress? People feeling safe because we're not the US? Still having cases increase.

Just me and the pond. I'm tired y'all. I won't be back in this thread. Too depressing. I'll be at the pond.

I'm right there with you. Just this morning some close family (that I just commited with to starting up a big business) started sharing a bunch of anti-mask poo poo, which I hoped was just careless sharing, but then I read the comments. I am at my loving wits end. The wife and kid were having a nap so I just went for a long drive and picked up some pizza and just... I just shut down.

It's coming from every direction. The stupidity and ignorance is coming from inside the family. I love these people, and in the past few months I have lost hope for them. I've lost hope for my family. I'm trying to just ride it out and hoping some sense returns, but I don't know how long I can keep it up. I've started looking into online therapy, if I get blindsided again and feel like I did today I will be in contact with my local mental health services.

I don't have low self-esteem. I have low esteem for everyone else.
Any recent updates on expectation on a vaccine? I know it takes flippin' forever, with most on average taking 10-15 years, and the shortest time for one being 4, but Fauci said he was "cautiously optimistic" one could exist for COVID by the end of this year or early 2021. I know that's not a guarantee and simply an estimate right now, but I was wondering what other (reliable) sources have been saying as of late.

Especially given it's kind of reliant on when I can go back to work and not have to be on unemployment, etc etc.

Everyone I know seems to think that the vaccine will be out by the end of the year and COVID-19 will be wiped out by this time next year. Most of these same people say there's no way they will be vaccinated.

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/science/coronavirus-vaccine-tracker.html

And take this with a tonnnnn of salt, Uncle at Nintendo style, but I know someone at AstraZ and they said they’re working like hell at it and management wants it by September for emergency use

Edit: ahh it’s no big secret anyway, says the same thing right there on the page

“A vaccine in development by the British-Swedish company AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford is based on a chimpanzee adenovirus called ChAdOx1. The vaccine is in a Phase II/III trial in England and Phase III trials in Brazil and South Africa. Supported by Operation Warp Speed, the project may deliver emergency vaccines by October. In June, AstraZeneca said their total manufacturing capacity stands at two billion doses”

Fwiw this is the first time in history that mass production is being spun up on SEVERAL vaccines that are still in testing, just in case one of them works. That's a somewhat comforting thought. There has never been more money spent on a vaccine than right now.

Not just vaccines, but treatments in general. Put “Covid” in clinicaltrials.gov and there are 2,000+ current clinical trials for everything you can imagine. It seems like every pharma company is pulling out at least one of their drugs to see if they’ll work at helping somehow.

I’m working on a trial now for a pharma company that is using 2 of their pipeline drugs to see if they’ll work treating Covid, but it’s in direct competition with at least one other trial the same company is doing using another one of their previously approved drugs to treat the same Covid symptoms.

youth soccer is starting back up here next week. with no more than 9 kids in practice. (there are 11 players on a soccer team) with rules that say that you can't shoot on the goalkeeper and only the coach can touch coaching equipment and the players have to use their own balls. players can't even pass a ball. coaches have to wear masks. if and when games start, social distancing enforced on the sidelines by referees. assistant referees must wear masks. no high fives or end of game handshakes

i reffed 150 games in a season and a half and i work with the special needs program in my district and coach my kids team. i miss it more than you can possibly imagine but im not going to do it in the fall

Also if you’re a typical goon you’ve got a decent GPU for games, you can use it to fold proteins and discover potential treatments via Folding@home

it's because the clubs and associations want to keep their funding. school budgets already got ridiculously slashed and it's going to happen in youth sports too. i think i mentioned, some of the club teams that cost like $2500 a year to play on, not including travel, have been doing weekly zoom classes with the kids alone in their backyards because they are desperate to make it look like what they're doing has value

I love the idea of an effective vaccine for covid that won't also roll d100 on the "sux to be you" table because it was produced from a set of companies and systems that values $ over any other principle.

What definition of 'we' would it take to aim higher than that?
