It's not simply a stupid boast that the comparison to the New Deal is being made - much like the Living Wage the rightwing takes leftwing slogans and concepts (debatable how leftwing the New Deal was of course) and misapplies them so they either poison the concept when it fails or get to claim they are the effective political party which can achieve things. Labour did initially pitch the Green New Deal for the election before moving towards the Green Industrial Revolution. This is the value of unashamedly radical policy concepts like Abolish Eton because there's absolutely no way that can get co-opted.

For those seeking good chips in London, pop into Ken's on Half Moon Lane if you're ever within shouting distance of Herne Hill. Consistently excellent. Only takes cash though

I haven't even carried a bank card in years, much less cash. I use phone payment apps for basically everything, even better now the contactless limit is £45 and beats carrying a bulky wallet everywhere.

Fun fact, the contactless limit doesn't seem to apply to phone payments. Presumably because you have to unlock it rather than just using a card that fell out of someone's pocket. I've bought multiple £100+ fortnightly shops with my phone during The Corona.

The ideal world is one where I don't need cash and also don't have to talk to a human for basic shopping/food needs. Self-service checkouts and those McDonalds screen things are extremely my poo poo.

ThomasPaine posted:Yeah, so many good kebab shops and curry houses etc but I agree good chippies seemed few and far between. For west London, in my lust for decent gluten free fish and chips, I did find hobsons just along from royal oak was pretty decent, but definitely more your fancypants gentrified kind of place rather than a proper chippy. If you are ever allowed back into Ireland* and want good GF fish and chips look up Beschoff Bros. It's a Dublin based fish and chips chain that do excellent GF fish, scampi, Onion Rings, Calamari and chips. Also they were founded by a Russian sailor who was on the Potkin, so bonus socialist points. Don't confuse it with Birdocks which is the other famous Dublin chipper for tourists. Really good food but not gluten free. Also if you want excellent chips when in Ireland look at Supermacs. It's a fast food chain that does burgers and snack boxes. But it is famous for having cheese chips, curry chips, garlic & cheese chips and curry & cheese chips. To such a degree that most chippers around Ireland do garlic & cheese chips and curry & cheese chips. Taco chips are another new invention and the ever popular bacon and cheese chips. I think Bread Meat Bread in Glasgow does a load of good chips and even poutines. Also the news was reporting that the UK government was re-imposing Lockdown in Leicester in England. What's happening there? *= because of Travel restrictions. Not that I'm doxxing Thomas Paine as being on some no fly listm The Question IRL fucked around with this message at 12:48 on Jun 30, 2020 |

Guavanaut posted:I thought it was even more famous for winning a court case against McDonalds that ended in EUIPO ruling that Big Mac was now generic, or am I confusing it with a different chain? Yes that's the same company. That's what they are famous for Internationally (and part of that was because McDonalds went to court with like print outs of the Wikipedia page for the Big Mac as most of their evidence) But in Ireland they are known for being a Rural fast food chain, beloved by GAA playing lads, being the place to go when the pubs close and for doing amazing chips. That being said few things in the world anger me more than people who call "curry chips" the singular "a curry chip."
