early 2000s music was a lot better than late 2000s music. i remember at the time everybody felt the whole indie music thing was a breath of fresh air after early 2000s monoculture but when i listen to that poo poo now it just sounds like absolute rear end while i can still enjoy a lot of early 2000s pop and rap and rnb.

The 2000s were dozens and dozens of Hollywood movies that "everyone" watched and I just couldn't be arsed. Mostly because about 100% of them starred Tom Hanks, somehow. (Wilson there reminded me.)

e: That was also the 1990s.

Survivor was the terrible precursor to the reality TV hell that we've lived in one way or another ever since. Yeah, it's 40 seasons, they film at least two per year. All of them are like that and there's no shortage of idiots willing to make fools of themselves on TV.

A friend of mines wife loved reality shows, so when I was at their place it was the only exposure I had to them. They were all so boring. People just sniping at each other and plotting, then maybe some boring to watch activity (Hold only this pole and whoever lasts the longest wins!). At least American Idol you get to hear music.

Also, reality shows reminded me a lot of wrestling, how everyone always over sold everything.

Could go on for days and days, but man, what a weird decade to go from 11 to 21 in.

One of my classmates in middle school emigrated to America from the middle east, her father died fighting Islamic fundamentalists and her mother took the kids somewhere safe from revenge.

Her mother made a special morning visit to school and brought her a cupcake, to celebrate her first birthday in this new country.

Her birthday was September 11, and this was 2001. She was escorted by police out of the building before lunch time.

I cannot imagine how hosed up I would be in that situation. She was extremely solemn and quiet throughout high school. I hope she is doing okay now.

Earth is a real hosed up place to live, isn't it?

IMO, MTV's The Real World was the beginning of the end... not only for meaning never actually seeing a music video on MTV again, but introducing the reality show to the world. I mean, it's got "Real" right in the title, as if we were actually gonna see what happens when real people from different walks of life got thrown together! What a novel concept! I can see why people latched onto it, especially not realizing how absolutely scripted and edited it was. I was in college at the time, and had some friends that became totally absorbed in the manufactured drama. "It's like a soap opera, but, like, totally real!" It was A Big Deal back when it first started.

That garbage started in 1992, so I blame them for everything.

This is a good point, I never watched The Real World, and it probably didn't take hold in the greater consciousness because it was behind the cable wall, whereas Survivor was on CBS.

That said, I lived in Seattle when they were filming the Seattle one, and Seattle as a whole loving hated them. I remember that the place they stayed at, it was actually illegal to be used as a resisence, so it had to be classified as a 24-hour film set. On top of that they put a bunch of fake sails up to make it look better. I seem to recall they also got thrown out of Gameworks at some point.

The best reality show was Joe Schmo.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Joe_Schmo_Show

There was only 1 actual "contestant," who was already pre-ordained to win, everyone else was an actor playing a character to mess with "Joe's" head. It was just full of over-the-top reality show cliches and tropes, and it was only in 2003!

poo poo like when someone is voted off, they take a plate off of a mantle (like, as in one of those decorative Franklin Mint Commemorative Plates,) and smash it into the fireplace.

And then the token "bad boy" (basically the actor was doing Puck from The Real World amped up to 11) was voted off, but in a "twist" came back, so his "plate on the mantle" was just shoddily glued back together.

It even had Kristen Wiig in one of her earliest TV roles, and David Hornsby (Rickity Cricket from Always Sunny) as "The bad boy."

I guess they had a couple more seasons but I never saw them, it peaked at 1.

The second season was amazing. It was a dating show with two "real" contestants.

One of them figured out it was fake and ended up being looped in with production. She still got her prize as well. They brought in another person to fill her spot since she was essentially a cast member at that point.

the worst reality show was the one where they sent a bunch of kids out to rebuild a town or some poo poo.

Obviously, this led to the teenagers ruling the rest with an iron fist. It made it a few episodes, before outraged parents complaining drove it off the air.

The thing is, lately I've started turning on navigation for my routine routes. In Android you can turn off the directions, so it just interrupts my podcasts to inform me that there's a speed trap ahead, or the other day there were three accidents, so it found me a new route that bypassed the whole thing.

I would say the opposite ! Not to make this music chat here, but i consider C.C to be a pivotal part in indie music history (not to sound all hyperbole here). Same for other indie/alternative greats during that time. :siren: PLUS! :siren: synth has been around 4 evers. Some people adopted it and others adapted it. Good example would be how DEVO had songs that sound essentially 80s while playing in the early 70s.

My point is; music is for ever and never grow up charlie ! I don't need an adult to run my chocolate factory!

I'd actually stop listening to Crystal Castles because of the problematic producer over the music aging tbh

well i guess you're partially right but that post was prompted by me trying to listen to the band again for the first time in 10 years and realising that all of their earlier songs were like "get it?? it's the sound effect from q*bert!! in a song!!!" because that was a novel thing back then, but it just kind of sounds like generic chiptunes to me now. i guess its fine but i dont really ever find myself listening to music from that era (like 2006-2013) ever even though i used to be a big indie music guy. only pop songs from the 2000s have really stuck with me, like girls aloud and stuff like that

I mean that's fine. There's hot garbo music from each decade but the artist that did something or just kinda transcended the ages always stick with me. And basically music and trends start somewhere right? So of course over the years more artist with similar sounds will fine tune that poo poo. I never really considered Crystals to be "chiptune" but I can see your point. Guess you're not fan of Anamanaguchi? :v:

I can pull out my fav music bangers from when I can even remember music. SO from 1993 up. Got a jam for each decade!
