Mr Interweb posted:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjDUUU-Z-aI Imagine a hypothetical society where the prevailing belief is, "Red haired people are inherently criminal! Look at all the red haired people in jail!" Well, what link is there between red hair and crime? (there's none). If studies showed that there's no correlation between hair color and crime, then the jailed redheads is actually proof of the biases and prejudices of a society that condemns redheads unjustly. If you say, "But redheads perform worse in schools! Earn less in jobs! Die younger!", all of that is in fact an indictment of schools and jobs and society - not "proof" that redheads are dumb (because the actual proof says there's no correlation), but proof that people are out to get them. It's the illusion of an argument, made by evil fuckers with axes to grind. If black people struggle in higher learning institutions, it's the fault of the institutions for being awful, because black people are as smart as any other race. We know they're as smart as any other race because of genetic studies, because of double-blind tests where they hide names on resumes, because of any of a hundred other instances of actual science. Conservatives make these dogshit arguments because they have dogshit beliefs that can't be validated in any honest way.

Citing Thomas Sowell is an own-goal but Owens isn't the brightest bulb. It's not true of course: quote:In fact, most of the research on the mismatch question points in the opposite direction. In our 2009 book, William Bowen, Michael McPherson, and I found that students were most likely to graduate by attending the most selective institution that would admit them. This finding held regardless of student characteristics—better or worse prepared, black or white, rich or poor. Most troubling was the fact that many well-prepared students “undermatch” by going to a school that is not demanding enough, and are less likely to graduate as a result. Other prior research has found that disadvantaged students benefit more from attending a higher quality college than their more advantaged peers. https://www.brookings.edu/research/are-minority-students-harmed-by-affirmative-action/

Mr Interweb posted:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjDUUU-Z-aI I would wager that they're comparing white students from high socioeconomic status families that got very high SAT/ACT scores and attended very high end high schools (because those are the kind of white kids that go to Ivy League schools) to black students that benefited from Affirmative Action style programs primarily being drawn from the best performers at underperforming public schools that serve low socioeconomic status families. There would be a huge culture shock and potentially a large initial knowledge gap for the latter group. That may well result in a large difference in terms of grades and the like, but taken in conjunction with the results of that Brookings study quoted above ("Other prior research has found that disadvantaged students benefit more from attending a higher quality college than their more advantaged peers.") and you can conclude that Owens is being deceptive by pointing at grades rather than actual gains in knowledge or life outcomes.

They cry about free speech and censorship one minute then bitch about talk about the free market being able to solve everything - as if FB, Twitter or You Name It weren't privately owned companies. Didn't some crazy women handcuff herself to Twitter HW or something? Loomer? I think the whole disgusting thing speaks to these people's fear and how scared they are to venture outside of their echo chamber. I borrowed a company van yesterday and, sure enough, radio was on AM talk radio station. They listen to this ALL DAY. I don't know why they think that advertising driven "information" is more believable and valid than even something like NPR but they're a weird bunch of people. I'll cop to mainly posting here and maybe staying in a bit of an echo chamber myself but I can't convince myself it's the same thing and all that "both sides" bullshit. I honestly think it's the main reason so many of them enjoy church so much. Not to get on a religion derail or anything.
