Got to thinking today about how MAGAs pretend to DESPISE "big government"

But...um...they don't.

Aren't a huge aggressive military, supporting the death penalty, building more prisons and a strong militarized police presence the epitome of this concept writ large? Or having ones day in court and being able to defend themselves being tied to income level? Mandatory drug tests being tied to welfare and EBT? Wanting to jail reporters and political enemies plus suppressing the free press...?

Also, executive orders are seemingly just super A-Ok now. 48 per year for Trump vs. 34.6 for Barrack Obama - and most of Obama's were milquetoast wishy washy sort of poo poo as well as being ordered during his second term once he (loving finally) figured out that Republicans refused to even vote for their own legislation if it was him proposing it.

Almost like they're hypocrites or some such thing.

The GOP LOVES "big government"

Abortion rights being hammered away, voting restrictions, executive privilege, ICE detention camps, cops acting as jury, judge and executioner...marines and preemptive military strikes, torture, waving due process, racial profiling, executions by the state, theocratic law...

That IS "Big government", isn't it? All the stuff the founding fathers supposedly fled from that they pretend to worship. Just none of the poo poo that, you know, helps people.

it's a very effective campaign slogan for uniting the traditional republican coaltion

to the wealthy GOP donors "small government" means low taxes and regulatory capture
to the blue collar chuds it means "states rights" which in turn means rolling back civil rights for minorities

all that other stuff about executive orders or whatever is just poo poo they throw at democratic presidents for political points

Yep yep yep. Power and goodies for me and my social group, grinding oppression for everybody else. When stated bluntly, it's a hard sell, so Conservatism as an intellectual project is built around obscuring this truth, which is where you get all that hand waving about Burke and Hayek and Oakeshott and "limited government" and the "free market". They don't actually believe in any of that stuff, it's just noisy nonsense to distract you from their real agenda. It's why their stated beliefs are so contradictory and why pointing out their contradictory beliefs never changes them.

i can't tell if this dude is a chud per se, and it looks like his FB account is either deleted or hidden, but what he did was still pretty dumb:

quote:

A California man posted his regret on Facebook about contracting the coronavirus after he attended a party in June. A day later, he died from COVID-19.

On June 20, Thomas Macias, wrote an impassioned message on Facebook in which he lamented ignoring social distancing guidance.

"Some of you may know, but most don't," Macias, 51, wrote. "I ... went out a couple of weeks ago" and contracted the coronavirus.

Macias, who was a truck driver, expressed guilt for having possibly exposed his family to the virus.

"Because of my stupidity I put my mom and sisters and my family's health in jeopardy," he wrote. "This has been a very painful experience."

"Hopefully with God's help," he added, "I'll be able to survive this."

He died the next day.

quote:

Lopez said that sometime in early June, however — after Gov. Gavin Newsom indicated that he would loosen social distancing restrictions — Macias attended a party in Lake Elsinore, about 70 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

Afterward, a friend of Macias' who was also at the party contacted him to say he had tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, Lopez said.

The friend told Macias that he was aware of the diagnosis when he attended the gathering but that because he was not showing symptoms, he did not believe he could infect anyone else.

quote:

He was tested for COVID-19 on June 16 and received a positive diagnosis on June 18. In his Facebook post two days later, Macias implored people to take the coronavirus seriously.

"This is no joke," he wrote. "If you have to go out wear a mask and practice social distancing."

He was rushed to the hospital at about 11 a.m. on June 21. He was put on a ventilator sometime from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and died by 9 p.m., Lopez said.

I’m also a loving fool because I’m not wearing 60 pounds of gear, carrying a loaded rifle, officially immune to local laws, and backed up by at least one but more likely three other, similarly equipped folks with shittier attitudes than mine, and now I have kids. i'm going to have to correct you on this. to be clear, masks are not 100% full proof. the whole premise is that you just reduce the amount of droplets in the air if you do have it. and that when you sneeze or talk you're not just spraying the atmosphere with your dirty infected droplets.
