You guys complaining about market barons are missing the forest for the trees. Market Barons were a problem, but weren't really the problem. The problem is that buying gear from vendors is gated via the quest system and the quest system sucks. The flea market allowed you to circumvent it and get gear, at a premium, on the flea market. This was a good and cool thing. I could go to any map I wanted without having to worry about whether or not I was making progress on collecting obscure poo poo for a glorified wall of text with a picture so I can unlock foregrips and better ammo. None of this matters anyways, I'm not playing this game again until the quest system is better or they take the chains off the flea market. I've dumped hundreds of hours into this game and done the quest chains 4ish times now. Just not interested in the same lovely loop. I might play for a bit just to see if Streets of Tarkov meets any of the hype, but I'm not holding my breath.

ShowTime posted:But only like 10% of the playerbase plays like that. Either way I’ll let the extremely generous “realistic military sim” concept stand. But the devs also created a player-run market system, and rather than encourage or even manage emergent forms of play that have come about through that system the devs make increasingly ham-handed attempts to suffocate it. It’s confusing to me, because more diverse forms of play = more players = more playerbase stability = more money to maintain, update, and grow your game but BSG doesn’t seem to understand or care about any of that. And what’s *really* confusing is when people who don’t even play the loving game come in to say stupid poo poo about how “well that’s not what Nikita intended ok??” like it’s supposed to excuse bad design.

Other than getting rid of the gimmicky Jaeger type quests, while I also am not a fan of the current system, I struggle to think of meaningful quests that would work well with the game mechanics. Other then retrieval and marker type quests, what else could they even really have that would work in a raid? I see this as a common complaint but questing in MMOs I feel have always sucked and filled with retrieval and farming items. ETS doesn't seem all that different from other MMOs but then again my most recent MMO experience was WoW in the late 2000s.

I feel like I'm the only one who likes the recent FIR market changes. I like that after I killed a really geared PMC or raider, that I actually end up using his kit instead of just selling it right away and finding the best min/max loadout to buy instead. For example, I got a FLIR during the last twitch drops, and if I could actually sell it there's no way in hell that I would ever use it. But, because its not FIR, and I would only net small amounts of money selling it to traders, I''m actually going to go into a night time woods raid instead of constantly having gear fear and running only budget loadouts. Yeah, I could've done this before, but I wouldn't have, so sometimes its good for the game to force you to play differently. People complaining that this disincentivizes PVP have been watching too many streamers and playing too much CoD. This game is supposed to be a sneaky, ratty type survival horror game, not sprinting full speed with meta M4, slicks and altyns and doing parkour off every angle, then ADAD strafing the poo poo out of someone. Yeah its unfortunate that the gunplay in ETS is literally the best out of any milsimish FPS out there if you were looking for a good PVP game, I feel its perfectly fair for the devs to start modifying the game itself so that it stays in line with whatever they're going for here. The most boring time I ever had playing ETS was during the pre-wipe event where I just kept running with all the best gear I could buy, but the game lost all of its risk/reward and meta-gambling system and became actually really boring. I didn't even end up playing each day on the pre-wipe, just a few hours. Post-wipe the first week or so was the most fun I ever had. Also, I feel very little temptation now to do hatchet runs, even though I despise the concept of it last wipe, I ended up biting the bullet and doing them just to make money. I hated that, and I'm glad the game is forcing me to actually play it instead of min/max meta bullshit. The most boring time I I can't wait for the game to add in dynamic loot so that people aren't just sprinting and farming the same spots over and over. I would also love some sort of dynamic extract system where it changes to like random spots on the map or something so then people can't exfil camp and it changes the way each raid works instead of people memorizing every single angle and point on the map. Playing through my first fresh wipe was an interesting experience 'cause most of the quests are really not that painful when almost everyone's in level 3, max level 4 armor and you can use 7.62 PS the whole time. It feels like they did little to no balancing for power creep due to level 5/6 armor and top tier ammo, and starting kill/dress-up quests mid-wipe really shows it.Oysters Autobio posted:I can't wait for the game to add in dynamic loot so that people aren't just sprinting and farming the same spots over and over. idiotsavant posted:dynamic exit points would actually give you even more reason to memorize every single angle and point on the map just fyi. The single most important thing that wins fights in this game is asymmetrical info, and knowing the maps you play inside and out is one of the basic elements of that. Nah man thats my point, even though I agree in the current state you're right, I don't like that memorizing the map is what determines firefights instead of good tactical movement and other more realistic behaviour instead of sprinting across an open field because you know the map so well you know it's safe. Obviously this can't be fixed unless we were in some open MMO type map where everything was one big connected map (lmao love reading the subreddit where people still parrot that this is ever going to happen for ETS), but would love it if more aspects were randomized on the map so that asymmetric info wasn't as big of an advantage, rather that good tactical movement through cover and concealment should be the advantage. Again, pipe dream since this will never change but I think dynamic exit points would actually help still because you would have to move through the map in different ways instead of just predicting "oh, this is a high traffic area" and "oh, this is a low traffic area".

Yeah one thing that's been very helpful to me is just going into an offline raid to gently caress around with key binds. There's so many functions in this game that aren't in other FPSes and they're generally not bound to obvious or convenient keys. Like just checking your mag is on some stupid inconvenient bind of alt + R or something, even though it's an incredibly basic thing you'll want to do all the time. I just put it on "hold R" and that made way more sense to me.

I've experienced it in several group raids too. A couple people get a quest item and we cut out to reset because no one wants to engage in a firefight and risk losing it. In a 5 man group the two people with items are going to hide in the back to lower their risk so its basically a 3 man running an escort mission. Repeat ad nauseum. Now with all the flea market and vendor changes people are heavily saying they're not going into raids geared because there's only high risk for little reward. They give out a million rubles then cripple the bitcoin farm. Always one awkward step forward two back

So what if people decide to extract when they got what they needed? Like I get the appeal of a 5 man just going into a map to PVP and try to clear it out, but that's not the spirit of the game at all, that's just CoD. The game is supposed to be a brutal survival horror where dying is easy and you find that lab key card or other rare item and are sweating bullets trying to get out alive clutching your lovely AK. The devs have said lots that they intend to slow people down in making many so that early post wipe gameplay is stretched out. Just because some streamers meta'd the poo poo out of a poorly developed game doesn't mean everyone should be playing this game decked out and looking for those sick 360 no scope headshots.

Some of the most recent posts have been complaining about how lovely the quest system is. Buckle up, it's intended to get a lot worse. Do you hate the Mosin questline from Jager? According to what Klean was saying in his stream today, the intent is to do such a quest series for EVERY weapon type. DVL, SVD, FAL, ASH-12, each of the various AK families... He wasn't sure if pistols and shotties were also going to go that way, but what the hell, if it makes the game even more tedious to get that Kappa container then don't be shocked if it happens. Nikita's probably hoping folks will upgrade their accounts to get the Gamma instead of doing the grind, but I don't think it's too wild a guess that the majority of players will either do without or tell his Nikitaness to go have carnal relations with a rusty wood chipper.

Honestly, I really want to know what else could they actually do with questing that isn't the current shoot people with X gun, retrieval, drop-off or kill X things? It all seems like standard MMO fare, and like with most MMOs the questing isn't the main thing, raids and looting are the main thing. I know in the past the devs said that the current quests are intended to be the 'side quests' when the 'release' comes out (lol like there's ever going to be an official release) but I still can't picture really in the current spawn-in, 45mn timer, loot, PVP and extract system how any other type of quests can really exist. I'm not being facetious here I honestly can't picture what their idea of 'main quests' would be? Maybe that's back during their 'oh the full release is going to be open world and you'll have to visit the traders in raid' phase. Yeah the gun-use quests are gimmicky but otherwise people just wouldn't use some of the guns so it's not a terrible way to introduce people to variety (maybe though make it a seperate quest line so it doesn't bottleneck others, like most of Mechanics gun smith)

It doesn’t actually matter what you’re doing in quests, what matters is that they promote players to encounter each other on the maps. The various quests that have you pick up doodads and check out rooms in dorms and interchange are good for that, but they need quests like that for all the maps and they need to focus on more areas of each map. The problem with jaeger quests is that they are tedious, unfun and don’t prompt player interaction AND they gatekeep other important content. They can fill the game with try hard bullshit quests all they want, as long as I’m not required to do them to progress through the game.

Where exactly is this mythical middle ground that's considered "OK" by your standards? Yeah because there are absolutely no options between Chad tank and pistol running. Seriously? Sure, you can be against telling people how to play their game, or against me telling people how to play, it's a free country. But the devs absolutely have every right to set the game's parameters to influence the playstyle and atmosphere they want for the game. And in this case, the devs have been outspoken about how they feel it's too easy to make money and progress to the point of always being a tanked out chad instead of that being a late game luxury. They don't want you to have options of sprinting around tanking every bullet in every raid because it ruins the game for others when it's that prevalent. I would argue that they've really achieved it with these changes. The subreddits are complaining how it's no longer cost effective to run expensive gear since you can't strip PMCs gear and sell it on flea. So instead, people are playing lower class gear to make it match the risk, resulting in less big chads. Oysters Autobio fucked around with this message at 23:10 on Jul 3, 2020 |
