I really really like baseball. Like I'm pretty sure there's something wrong in my head. I did as a kid, then had a "gently caress sports" mentality through high school and college, then, got back into it in double full force a while back. I am not sure what to think about this season though, if it finally comes together like they say it will. 60 game season? Dumb but what can you do at this point? I'm surprised it is even going to happen. DH for both leagues? I don't like that at all. I guess it was bound to happen eventually as everyone says but I like the difference between the leagues, and yes I have a team in both leagues. Every pitcher having to face 3 at bats or finish the inning is going to ruin a bunch of lefty specialist careers and wont speed things up much at all. Just like the limited mound visits from the other year. Instead of a quick catcher pitcher visit to go through the signs real quick or whatever, it turned into everyone meeting on the mound to not "waste a visit" and took so much longer that it didn't really shave any time off of the game at all. And when people say baseball games are too long, but the average game is just as long as a regular football game, what is the point in shaving off 30 seconds total over 3 hours or whatever? I don't know many baseball fans that complain about game time, most of it all is to try to get new fans in, which is good, but no one is going to notice a difference and shooting yourself in the foot making up stupid new rules won't help. Runner starting on second base in extra innings? gently caress right off on that, sac bunt or sac fly, get a hit, game over, so stupid. I really dread that this shortened season is going to let too many bad decisions rule wise go through as they try to push though because of special circumstances and then all the new temporary rules just become the norm. Sorry I have OPINIONS about baseball. Love it and miss it though, having something to listen to on the radio most nights while driving for work is hard to beat. Going to live games is one of my favorite things to do. I know that won't likely be a thing for a while, but, I will take what I can get I guess! Sorry I ranted a bit there, but, I am all for chill and friendly baseball conversation

I love baseball too and had roughly the same sports trajectory as you (1994 ruined baseball for me for like a decade). I used to work at Fenway and it was lovely (except for the fans), and I was lucky enough to help run a baseball history course during my time in grad school. All that said: baseball will survive and still be awesome and weird even with rule changes. It survived 1887 four strike year, it'll survive both leagues having the DH for a year (NL should dump the dh I agree). But I can't wait for it to come back because the Twins finally look decent again. |

i agree re: the DH but it's gonna be in the next CBA almost certainly. the players want it and the owners don't care, so it's a "concession" they can make the runner on second thing is completely stupid, but I'm hoping that's just a weird-rear end 2020 thing. I wish they'd just do ties after a certain point though. 60 game season is gonna be weird, yeah, but everything's gonna be weird this year. god willing and the creek don't rise, it'll just be this year

baseball is one of the coolest games, i was just a little guy when my jays won back-to-back but i remember it vividly. basketball is another one. watching jordan do the things he did was incredible, then we got an expansion team with a dinosaur logo/mascot and i was hooked. i'll never forget that title win last year. sports rule. |

Serious answer: I grew up in Missouri in the 80's, so I had to like baseball. With Ozzie Smith on one side of the state and George Brett on the other, it was hard not to. When I got older we used to take bong rips, and turn down the volume on the TV so we could listen to the play-by-play on the radio. Truly the chillest sport. Joke answer: |

Prof. Crocodile posted:Serious answer: Big reason I am a Royals fan to this day, when I was a kid we didn't have a team in my home town and he was amazing. I guess that Bo Jackson guy was ok too at a couple of sports or whatever, but really George Brett was so good for so long. Later we got a team where I was living in the National League, so I feel okay having an American League and National League team. "Childhood team when there was no hometown team then adding a hometown team but not giving up on your childhood team" is about as loyal as you can get and still have 2 teams, especially being in different leagues. I like baseball. Prof. Crocodile posted:When I got older we used to turn down the volume on the TV so we could listen to the play-by-play on the radio. I have definitely done this, and now the MLB.TV app lets you do this sometimes too. You can pick which teams feed you want, then pick if you want the audio to be from the TV broadcast, the radio broadcast, or sometimes even just the ambient audio from the park. At least it did let you do this, who knows what will happen this season, I've heard rumors of neutral broadcasts or at least just neutral camera angles and that just wouldn't be as fun. We will see I guess.

hoping this is a playoff year for my Reds. I fade in and out with sports, but baseball is a summer staple. |
# ? Jul 4, 2020 01:13 |

I like football because it's only 16 games plus a few playoff games and I can just about devote enough attention to that amount to have an idea of what's going on in the season. All the other majors it's like yay, local team won 3/5 against the Tampa bay whatever, just 144 more games, who cares? But baseball is cool to just throw on in the background, and baseball highlights are the best sports highlights (and bloopers) by far. I went to a Raptors game last year for the first time, and though I've never been in to basketball, seeing it live, it's probably the most fun sport to watch live. |
