gh0stpinballa posted:i think it's good we're cutting the military budget and i look forward to labour arguing to give them more money. Very much the same. The military budget is far bigger than it needs to be for an island this pissant. Slashing the military budget only reduces the possibility of future military adventurism abroad. It's going to suck when Sir Keir goes for "we really need to invade Iraq again. And Iran. At the same time."

Also, in a world where the people making procurement decisions aren't sleeping next to the lint inside BAE executives' pockets, it would encourage smarter procurement. This being hell-world, though, I've got no idea what Boris and his gang of public-private-funds-reallocation will do

While I think that cutting the militaries budget is probably a net good decision, they said they are reducing the number of personal. And won't that mean "well we have X Thousand fewer soldiers. Now we don't need quite so much body armour, military grade assault rifles and Hum-Vees. To whom can we sell those to? How about the police force." And as we all know, giving police Robocop levels of equipment just means you get rid of all crime.

Cutting the size of the army and the Royal Marines means they get to save money on forces wages and small boring stuff like logistics, while at the same time keeping open the direct pipeline from taxpayers --> BAE Systems. (Weren't they very recently talking about ordering a bunch more warships because of "the threat from China" or something?)

JeremoudCorbynejad posted:The people in Soho last night won't be just the people living in Soho, so yeah you joke but it'll literally have to be all of London. There was talk about specific boroughs being put into lockdown, enough that councils put out statements to say their numbers are low and it's just rumours https://www.mylondon.news/news/health/london-boroughs-respond-local-lockdown-18524303 but how would you even do borough by borough lockdowns in London? You gonna set up 4000 barriers across roads and pathways or just close a few tube stations and hope? It seems impossible. London has had really low numbers, maybe it'll all be fine, but yeah it would have to be all of London to be anything and then you've got all the peope that commute in each day too.

An doctor friend of mine working in London has said they've had a quiet shift, quieter than some weekdays before COVID. There were obviously thousands of people out around the country but if it was just a symbolic need and visit for a lot of people rather than a return to the sess (helped by nightclubs not being open) and this weekend will literally be the low point of community infections then this may not the predicted apocolypse after all. It'll be whether this becomes a normal unsafe habit for a lot of people which will be the problem.

It's the latter but they can say the former is to not lose face with anti Corb comments. The army cuts means more rank and file pushed out onto the streets which is tragic and it will hamper our peacekeeping commitments most likely. Hard to tell though what is exactly will affect other than pushing soldiers from disadvantaged backgrounds from poverty, into poverty and homelessness. Sad.

Failed Imagineer posted:Yeah will be interesting to see if the British public has any interest in going out and getting pissed. Might not catch on As much as we dunk on the public for being lovely about a lot of things we've had 3 months of pretty effective propaganda about how deadly just going to hang out with people can be. There will always be a core of people not giving a poo poo and tragically a lot of them are in government right now but it's quite possible that enough people are actually acting well enough to limit the overall impact. If so, a lot of places are going to go out of business but that was also completely predictable. namesake fucked around with this message at 13:08 on Jul 5, 2020 |
