Not quite an actual reporter, but a former player and radio host, wonder if a deal is done. Probably not since I had heard they are punting to next year to resolve the covid-related salary cap unknowns

Hey now, they've had two movies made about them starring Charlie Sheen. I can't say that about my team.

And a third starring Scott Bakula apparently that I'd never heard of before.

They should digitally edit out all the chief wahoos from Major league like the guns from ET or smoking from a bunch of scenes for tv cuts of movies.

Or don't, but it'd be funny.

You can only spread signing bonuses over the first 5 years of a deal, and I believe there's restrictions after that, but you *could* probably do vesting roster bonuses after that.

This is obviously a big commitment for the Chiefs, but I kinda wonder why Mahomes would sign this. I'm guessing it looks like a bargain for the Chiefs by years 5 or 6. It takes away a lot of his leverage.

It would be a stupid move on Mahomes’ agent part if that deal isn’t worth 450-500 million

Wilson is currently at $35m per, so you have to expect this to be well north of that to start and going up as well unless Mahomes is the dumbest person on the planet.

you uh, sure about that?

if Mahomes is performing at MVP level 5 years from now and threatens to skip the season, who do you think blinks first? in that scenario, he's already banked 9 figures, and the team would be poo poo without him

IIRC, football has zero limits on contracts after the rookie deal. 10-year contracts have occurred before, I think Brett Favre’s last one in Green Bay was such, they’re just stupid rare.

Maybe, but given how much of the nuclear option that clause has been in these negotiations, maybe those near-term storm clouds were what allowed him to get the provision on the table. The team thinks, hey, we could get a bargain for 1-2 years, while Mahomes is thinking about the long term cap trend.

He'll still have leverage of course, but refusing to play with 4 years remaining on a deal is a rather different interaction than planning for free agency in a year. It's a worse look for other interested teams, that's for sure.

The actual contract will likely only matter for 4-5 years where it'll be renegotiated. The initial number will be fun and big and ultimately meaningless.
