It's totally going to be % of cap. That's the only way it makes sense for either side.

I'd guess 20%. How much do you guarantee and how do you determine that number?

The length of the extension is almost certainly just being done to dilute the signing bonus hit annually so the team can stay competitive.

(seriously how did Kliff Kingsbury coach this man and not even manage to make a bowl game his last year in college?)

I haven't verified this but I heard someone on the radio saying you can only spread signing bonuses out for 5 years or something like that.

Does he succeed without Andy? Or is he just Jeff George 2.0?

Yes, prorated bonuses can only be spread out over 5 years.

I *believe* you could put in vesting roster bonuses that kick in down the line to have easily obtainable guaranteed money in those later years, but I don't think there's much reason to. If Mahomes is smart, those later years do have non-vesting roster bonuses set on the first day of the league year to force them to lock in early though, but that's a different thing.

I think he has too much of a natural work ethic/desire to be great to totally bust. But this was definitely the perfect storm for him to come out and be what he is.

they should have written it so he gets paid his rookie salary once every three years or so, that way they could build a team to make temporary runs around him, blow it up, start over 3 or 4 times in his career

The team recently made a deal for a field naming-rights thing that won't happen this year but probably next year and I bet a huge chunk of that is going towards this contract.
