started the new cockshott book titled how the world works: the story of human labor from prehistory to the modern day. i've only read the chapters on pre-class and slave economies but it's very good. he presents an interesting explanation for why hunter and gatherer societies made the transition to agriculture: population pressures. first, improved hunting tools lead to more food and, therefore, population growth. next, the community's caloric needs exceeded what could be gotten from hunting and gathering, providing an incentive to domesticate crops. agriculture took, on average, more labor time to produce the same amount of calories as hunting and gathering, so absent that incentive there was no reason to make the transition. but once completed, it does provide more calories per square kilometer, which, alongside improvements in farming tools, reduces constraints on population growth even further. pretty quickly the population is of a size that there's no going back to hunting and gathering, even if other, more bountiful areas were discovered there's also some interesting stuff about the sexual division of labor and the rise of patriarchy and how they're determined by the mode of production. I don't think he's a psyop. I think he's been beaten down so much that he believes that only way out of the current situation is reformism. In his earlier lectures he was alot more explicit about his criticism of the NYT and espoused his anarchist beliefs more explicitly. He's done too much for the struggle against imperialism, especially in the Muslim world for me not to have some fondness for him. Edit: Also he signs just about any petition put in front of him.

chomsky infamously defended a holocaust denier against censorship because he has pretty absolutist views on freedom of speech, so seeing him sign his name to this isn't really surprising. he's also always advocated for lesser evil voting, if you're in a swing state at least, on consequentialist grounds, so his support of biden in the election shouldn't be surprising either. there are a better leftist writers for basically any topic he's covered. and, if you're posting in this thread, then there's likely not any reason for you to go out and read him. but, for many people, he's the first anti-imperialist they ever encounter, he writes clearly, and he points them to other sources, so i try not to poo poo on him too much
