What was the reason behind the collapse of the french left during that time period? It's really surprising that many of the leaders of the 68 protests became neolibs.

Pushback against orthodox Marxism and class analysis in academia , along with disillusionment with the USSR and probably at least some money from the CIA here and there for a few people.

Usually, the Soviet reaction to the Prague Spring is cited as a chief cause, but Western/French security forces were doing the same thing at the same time. It is an excuse. I think it is mostly success in publishing and academia. If you are a "leftist" who is now upper middle class it doesn't make much sense to rock the boat. It is so much easier to write something safe and drink a bottle of wine in your garden.

It's really surprising that many of the leaders of the 68 protests became neolibs. i think ardennes is somewhat overstating the degree to which those specific intellectuals became liberals, but it bears remembering that the government bought off the workers during the sixty-eight rebellion and defeated it that way - it was becoming clear that organising the workers to stage a revolution was not a viable strategy, and so an alternative had to be formulated, prominent among them the march through the institutions, where cadres would get positions in important international and national positions and subvert them from a position of power. this they did, but as they shaped the institutions with their values and outlook, material reality and political consensus was shifting around them and suddenly they were imposing austerity on greece and sinking refugee ships in the mediterranean

like, the PCF is still around and still has its old school outlook, it's just kept bleeding and bleeding e. the prevailing attitude in western europe was that that the Soviets were more or less revisionist at this point and were committing acts of imperialism in a way very much parallel to the west. the lighthouses were mainly mao's china and to an extent albania, so soviet allegiance was a big point of contention even before prague '68 V. Edit: And im' not sure if I totally agree with the article, but it's a bitter irony that Chomsky himself becomes of one of the incarnations of "limited but vigorous debate" that hes railed against his entire life. Also it seems that most prominent leftists alive today have really good analysis yet garbage takes on action. See David Harvey, Varoufakis, Chomsky etc. Also I really want to read Parenti but I can't find most of his works in Canada? Any suggestions? I remember Bookchin saying something similar regarding the anarcho-syndicalists. Edit: Also the author's assertion that the 70s, 80s and 90s were more radical is kind of sketch to me. Granted I wasn't alive back then but it seems like typical leftist pessimism to me. Edit 2: Other than that whole series is a really good critique of Chomsky that illuminated many thoughts I've had about him but couldn't express. Once universities became businesses/equity funds, there really wasn't a place for the left, but that is only one facet. Ardennes fucked around with this message at 02:05 on Jul 8, 2020 |

the 70s seemed pretty radical compared to the following decades. i've been going through and reading old U.S. maoist papers from then on marxists.org and it's wild to see how many of these groups existed, and how optimistic they were

It was a bit of a last hurray well until recently (2020 is going to be a historically significant year one way or another).

the 1970s are fascinating to me. came across this video of the 1980 presidonkle campaign and there's a part where some communists show up trying to disrupt a carter event and get dragged off. i'm guessing... maoists https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAnOoP3Obu0&t=63s

Actually this vicious, acrimonious split is a step toward the inevitable success of global protracted people's war, etc. etc.

This was posted around ten pages back as a resource that supposedly tells the truth about Tienanmen Square but...do not treat this source as credible. The Xinjiang/Uighur article is 100% propaganda bullshit and the rest of the site is most likely the same.
