They love Trump because he's a balls out white supremacist and they're a polite white supremacist social club who sit around grumbling about how they're not allowed to be balls out about it. Sure there's a few weirdos in there who emphasize the "polite" enough that they could envision welcoming Mexican Catholics and Culturally aligned Muslims into the BBQ but yeah, that was always gonna be a heavy lift for a party who's so used to leading them around with red meat and not asking for much in return besides votes.

They would have tried, but it's hard to say if they would have gotten any traction. Political coalitions based primarily on exclusion have a lot of resistance to absorbing new groups. Unless they join at a lower rung than the established members, it's nearly impossible to do even if necessary to avoid destruction.
