Having just finished mainlining this long and very depressing thread, it seems like there’s a few different scenarios leading to abuse, which may need different approaches to tackle: 1 - Awkward nerds who got famous, started getting a lot of attention because of it, exploited that and rationalised what they were doing as ok because in their own heads, they’re still the vulnerable outsider. Kennedy, Avellone etc. 2 - Confident, sociopathic sexual predators who knew exactly what they were doing. I’m 99% sure the Ubisoft execs were this; you can tell in a workplace when the guys at the top are running it as their personal harem and it seems to have been really widespread there. 3 - Child molesters using kids’ interest in a Thing to find victims. Happened to a lot of fandoms I think, and obviously there’s all the streamer stuff coming out now. 4 - whatever the gently caress Manson Family poo poo Sky was getting up to. Charismatic leaders taking over a captive community, maybe. All of these are about exploiting a different power dynamic. I guess 1 and 2 are maybe the same dynamic except for different flavours of abuser. What can we actually do to stop the dismal parade of abuse? Can we disrupt the power disparities somehow? Because that’s what this actually comes down to. Calling people out helps but isn’t enough to stop it from happening again.
