to be clear that 'noooooooope' was more about not wanting to see anything involved in Chapo Discourse for the next, like, week after this. I have not listened to the episode yet

Eegah! posted:New episode dropped with Taibbi talking cancel culture so oh boy can’t wait for the discourse. I'll listen too it but unless its Matt Christman reiterating what hes said in his recent vlogs I'll be disappointed. Because he makes the compelling argument that talking about cancel culture either way is pointless and impotent because there is no one directing it and no one has the authority to start or stop cancellations. Then he also talks about how this is mostly a result of the internet and its perverse incentive structure driving people insane. AnEdgelord fucked around with this message at 03:53 on Jul 10, 2020 |

Pritchard is a just a hot takes machine who has personally come under fire for saying lots of homophobic or transphobic poo poo in the past. I believe their biggest claim to fame was very famously tweeting that they were starting a charity silence stream where every hour that they made X amount of money they would NOT post and NOT say anything and they were so legendarily hated and disliked that the stream was hugely successful because nobody wants to listen to this piece of poo poo. In the last two weeks Pritchard has come increasingly under scrutiny for being a sex creep and intimidating people into doing stuff and creep-texting, and they decided this was the perfect time to announce their transition and come out of the closet. As you can imagine, a lot of people are calling this suspicious timing at best, a smokescreen at worst.

Taibbi's whole assertion that when he was coming up the capital-N News used to be straight-talking reporting the facts as seen and leaving conclusions to the reader seems like Sorkin-level bullshit.

The people whining about cancel culture don't care about someone losing a job at Home Depot and I hate the people defending the concept bringing that up. They think cancel culture is Charles Murray being protested or Stephens getting dogpiled on Twitter. They think it's being able to share either long debunked or stupid beliefs and/or racism without consequences.

These folks were awfully quiet when Dershowitz torpedoed Finkelstein's attempt at tenure because Norm had pansted him on Democracy Now. Also weird how that's never brought up as an example of canceling despite being more famous than a lot of the examples they like trotting out.

part of the problem is that there's no actual definition of 'cancel culture'. it ranges from people whining about their menshies on twitter to people trying to get other people fired for disagreements to boycotting famous people because theyre rapists.

Listening to episode right now and while Im not done Im gonna say this is probably their worst episode ever. The core problem is that Matt is half right, he believes that the media and education is engaged in trying to shape public opinion for their own benefit, which is correct, but then he says the that this is a new phenomenon which is absolutely not true and it poisons his entire position. There never was a point where the media was anything approaching a neutral arbiter of discourse and American history education has always been deliberately designed to instill the values of the ruling class in the population regardless of what they were in that era. Also Amber says that "abolish the police" is entirely the domain of twitter radicals and is then directly contradicted by Taibbi saying he heard drug dealers on street corners debating it and they just never acknowledge that this proves Ambers point wrong.

At the end they started talking about the cultural products of cancel culture and they keep talking about how "they" haven't produced any culture aside from marvel and star wars movies. Who the gently caress is "they"? Is it Twitter randos or is it the Disney corporation? Because Disney doesnt direct cancel culture and twitter randos dont direct disney movies.
