I don't have the books with me at the moment, but one of the major characters in the Inheritance books is the god of love/sex who takes the form of a prepubescent boy and regularly has sex. That was the particularly egregious one, there was something in Broken Earth like that too but it wasn't nearly as bad.

Also, "bad faith"? I'm a lesbian, you dipshit. I don't appreciate heterosexual writers creating contrived plotlines that just coincidentally allow them to kill gay characters.

That's a spicy hot take, because it's entirely made up bullshit.

He's the god of children, tricksters, and innocence, so he almost never has sex, ever. The book mentions that pedos took an interest in him when he spent a thousand-plus years as a slave, because pedos are interested in an immortal child (and many of them die for their hubris), but on the limited occasions he has sex he is either fully pubescent (when looking like a human) or a totally intangible god-form fusing with other gods in something that I guess could be described as sexual relations, if you want to stretch. He has sex twice in the book focused on him, both times not as a tiny child, and neither time is it described in explicit detail. One of the times he looks like a sixteen-year-old, but that's a far, far cry from looking like a six-year-old.

You're not only being overly alarmist, you're being the kind of, yes, bad-faith alarmist who either deliberately makes poo poo up or doesn't actually give a poo poo and reports things based on half-remembered third-hand accounts.

Yes, excuse me, technically it's ephebophilia. My mistake. :jerkbag: It's even more loving disturbing that the god of childhood is having sex, but yes, I misremembered the book I only read a few chapters of because it was too goddamn creepy.

Yeah, that fits with the lie you already told. Also lol at the idea that a sixteen year-old having sex is some rules-lawyer poo poo to justify loving kids. Litigating her sexuality or the gender of her partner (no one being discussed here bothered to mention their pronouns literally anywhere, confusingly ) is just a bad idea all around.

Honestly the Gideon the Ninth books just seem like pulpy stuff written for younger audiences. But if a grown rear end adult is recommending them then by all means tee off

Seven for beauty that blossoms and dies

Gideon's a blast. It's well written and cleverly constructed, and it's clear that Gideon dying at the end isn't "Hayes code" bullshit or whatever, for gently caress's sake. . It's the first book in a trilogy about necromancers, come on. Also Gideon and Harrow are far from the only queer characters, so it's not like it's punishing characters for having the temerity to be gay.

It's not ~~great literature~~ or whatever, but not everything has to be.

packetmantis
Feb 26, 2013
The book is pretty clear that there's no way for Harrow to bring Gideon back because of the way her soul was absorbed. That's why I'm so angry about it, that in a book literally about necromancers she can't be brought back from the dead. I guess there's still time for some other way to be brought up, but I'm not holding my breath. I preordered the second one before I realized who the author was, and it's already been pushed back once.

Enough carping about books that may or may not be bad (or Bad); let's have some genuinely terrible books. Years ago, I was stuck at a boring job with nothing to do and nothing to read. The only books I could find were some pulp novels: Mack Bolan. The Executioner.

Mack Bolan is a Dangerous Man*. Very Dangerous. All the Evil People fear him. All the Corrupt and Stupid People hate him. But all the True and Good People admire him, because he is True And Good, in addition to being Very Dangerous. (It's an OC DONUT STEEL edgelord James Bond/The Punisher ripoff, as scribbled out in crayon.) And he needs to be Dangerous, because he is fighting a One Man War. Against the Mafia, who have literally thousands of armed men trying to kill him. Fortunately, they are Evil AND stupid.

(What is this trope called? The Evil Organization is simultaneously weak and strong; powerful and competent enough to control the city/country/world, yet easily out fought/outwitted by Our Heroes.)

Our story begins (after telling us how Awesome and Dangerous Mack Bolan is and his Tragic Backstory), in some American city (might have been Cleveland), secretly being controlled by the Mafia. Mack Bolan shows up and immediately infiltrates the Mafia (he carries an Ace of Spades, which is somehow a Top Secret Pass). Inevitably, the shooting starts. And it's BORING. John Wick level body count, yet duller than dirt. Sample text:

"It's Bolan!!" the Bad Guys shouted. And they all went for their guns.
Bolan was ready for them. He triggered his handgun and shot them all, because he was faster and deadlier than them.
"Bolan is here! Why can't you kill him?" yelled Mafia Stereotype Boss. He tried to run away, but Bolan was ready for him, because Bolan was smarter than him. Bolan triggered one last shot, and the boss died.
A Grim Look came over Bolan's face. One hundred "made men" dead. But they would came back with a thousand more.

Also, there was a woman, although she only existed to swoon over his Manliness and feel bad for his Secret Pain. And sex him, in a fade-to-black. And a stealth Winnebago. Then we are reminded (every chapter) that Mack Bolan is Dangerous (and various other complimentary/edgelordy adjectives). It's like Dick and Jane, with more violence and worse writing.

Out of morbid curiousity, I flipped through the second book. IT WAS THE EXACT SAME PLOT. Same hagiography of Mack Bolan the Dangerous, same repeated Tragic Backstory, different city, different woman to adore (and presumably sex) Mack Bolan, different group of Mafia cliches to scream, yell, and die, same ^#$%@#ing exact boringly written action scenes. This went on for [checks wiki] 38 books. Presumably by then, the authors/ghostwriters had gotten sick of shooting Evil Americans, so Mack Bolan went abroad to shoot Evil Foreigners. For 263 more books, plus 93 "SuperBolan" novels. Not bad for Vigilante Mad Libs.

gently caress, how did I remember this much from some crappy books I picked up once, years ago...

*Capitalization my own. The actual books weren't that subtle.

Inheritance trilogy sucked, broken earth trilogy is great, I couldn't even finish dreamblood.

You want a creepy and gross sex scene though, here's an except from a book called Mermaid's Song I picked up for $1 in a used book shop.

Elan felt his hardness press against her belly, so near the small hidden slit that ran vertically in the soft skin just below her navel. What filled her was something like hunger, but in her womb. His every movement against her was a promise of what was to come, and Elan felt her breath come faster. All she wanted was to begin the dance and finally to burst with the tension that smothered all her senses. A soft moan escaped with her breath and she saw the Nemu flinch at the sound, saw him struggling with her desire and his own

(If we start, not stop we could.)His voice, and soon the meaning of his words, cut through the haze that enveloped her. Feeling his hardness and urgency, knowing how deeply she was woven into this spell,

Elan is a mermaid, and Nemu is a dolphin. Dolphins are portrayed in this book as sentient but stupid.

Didn't require any effort to write them. Just a master document, a spreadsheet, and some print merge. I'm just surprised people kept buying them. I'm no stranger to crappy pulp, but I couldn't even find these interesting. They couldn't even be (badly) gory, or sexual, or gun-porny.

It's a quote from his Eternal Fascism: Fourteen Ways of Looking at a Blackshirt. The quote in the smiley is from number 8, "The followers must feel humiliated by the ostentatious wealth and force of their enemies."

Umberto Eco posted:

When I was a boy I was taught to think of Englishmen as the five-meal people. They ate more frequently than the poor but sober Italians. Jews are rich and help each other through a secret web of mutual assistance. However, the followers of Ur-Fascism must also be convinced that they can overwhelm the enemies. Thus, by a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus, the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak. Fascist governments are condemned to lose wars because they are constitutionally incapable of objectively evaluating the force of the enemy.
