Is there a list of what's worth grabbing from the shop to make the play experience smoother? I'll have VIP. Not interested in level skips or the like, just convenience/speed/travel/inventory fixers.

The store is filled with so much I can't even parse it.

- Wallet is a necessity. Getting a task item carryall can be pricey but will fix many of your inventory issues
- Grab the quest packs for free while you can, along with expansions which are almost free (99 points each, I think)
- Get the horse skill pack that makes all mounts max speed on all your characters
- If you do any crafting get the universal toolkit (not the more expensive version, it's not necessary)
- Create a character of every class while you have VIP, that will unlock a number of things on them you'd otherwise have to buy. After a month you can let VIP expire.

Another vote for the wallet. A month of VIP and the wallet are probably the two must-have QoL purchases.

There's a list of things that are good to do before your VIP expires in order to get the most of the time you have. Off the top of my head, you'll want to earn the Riding skill on all the toons you're planning to use in the future, unless you buy a package that gives you account-wide Riding. You'll also want to choose carefully what items you want to have in your wardrobe slots because your capacity will drop by 20 when VIP expires. Any stuff that's in there stays, but if you want to add something new you'll have to either take a bunch of stuff out, or buy 20 slots back.

Scholars are some of the most pompous and pedantic people I've ever had the joy of meeting.
At this point, the game itself should have a popup that says "I see you want to spend money and you do not have the wallet upgrade yet. Do you want to buy that first? Yes / Yes"

So I'm jumping in on a fresh dwarf guardian, I got the free quests as well. Should I do the story in the normal order or is there a better quest line to hit up? I noticed DDO had a new and better starting area, so I was wondering if that was true here too, or are all the free quests just for higher levels?

Do the story in the normal order following the epic quest, it does a pretty good job of guiding you around the world roughly to where you should need to be. There are PLENTY of quests, you won't run out at all and in fact if you do all the quests you will be far overlevelled for most areas. Plus there's areas of former level cap (Gondor at level 100, Erebor/Anduin at level 120, etc.) that you will go well beyond the intended level.

If you REALLY get lost this page has a good roadmap of what quests are what level where:

https://lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Category:Regional_Quests

Generally new content these days gets added at the level cap with some exceptions (like the Bingo Boffin quest line if you like escorting a clueless hobbit around middle earth). There aren't any areas that really stick out as being avoidably bad save Angmar and Rohan.

The first three zones are free to all players (although the starting area varies with which race you’re playing so it’s really the first five zones). As a Dwarf you’ll go from Ered Luin (1-10) to Bree-lands (10-20) to the Lonelands (20-30).

If you’ve entered the code for the free quest packs, you’ve also got every zone from that point to level 50 (which is where the original game ended).

Nope, LOTRO's starting areas are unchanged. They made new ones for the new races, but when they finish the instance, it just dumps you in one of the regular open world newbie zones.

You get storyline quests for free, plus zone quests for the newbie zones. Zone quests for later zones require you to either pay points to unlock the zone or subscribe. You won't be able to level up exclusively from storyline quests; if you do all the zone quests before moving on, you'll be overlevelled for the next zone. I don't consider that a problem, but your mileage may vary.

Also once you get close to level 50, you'll want to get the expansions which aren't free but are close enough to it. It will take at least a month or so to get to 50 on your first character.

The following expansions cost 99 points each in the online store now which is about as close to free as you can get (buying $8 worth of points will get you enough for them all and change).

Moria: level 50-60 content, best content by far in the game. Moria is awesome.
Mirkwood: unlocks Lorien and Mirkwood and takes you from level 60-65. Still pretty good.
Isengard: Eh. Level 65-75. You may not even need it if you level intelligently (though Dunland is probably worth buying it)
Riders of Rohan: level 75-85, and it's almost impossible to level without it. Also the content quality took a nose dive. Introduced mounted combat which is really bad.
Helms Deep: level 85-95, literally Rohan Part Two. Introduced Epic Battles which are also pretty underwhelming.
(95-105 is taken up with Gondor, part of the free quest packs and when the game got good again)

The following two expansions are still full price since they're pretty recent.

Mordor: level 105-115. When released it was kick-in-the-balls hard, it's easier now that you can go over the intended level and I think it was also nerfed several times. Pretty good.
(115-120 is taken up with Erebor and neighboring areas, which are all now in the free quest pack)
Minas Morgul: level 120-130. 130 is the current cap and there's been one level 130 quest pack that came out since. Also pretty good!

Basically you can blow $8 on expansions and a wallet and play for free for a year easy. Mordor and Minas Morgul are $20 each but if you get to that point it's probably worth it!

Nope, Lorien was a quest pack zone that didn't change the level cap from 60. The equivalent of Enedwaith/Great River/Wildermore/etc.

They did just introduce a streamlined option for the Helm's Deep battles which I haven't done, but personally after the slog of Rohan hitting the epic battles caused me to quit the game for a long time. So it's nice you don't have to slam into that brick wall quite as hard now. I'd be real interested to see data around how many players were playing through zones at a steady pace only to hit Rohan and quit. Seems like a good player retention strategy would be a complete revamp of that xpac (why is Rohan so bad anyway? Did they switch devs?). At least now it's only ~$1 so you don't have to grumble about how much you paid for this crap as you play it.

Anyway, as others have mentioned if you can power through Rohan once you get to Gondor things are great and stay that way. Also Mordor is almost guaranteed to be heavily discounted on Black Friday, so if you think you'll get that far within the next year it's a good time to pick it up.

Lothlórien is fine but the epic quest line in the last part of the Moria expansion and all throughout Mirkwood isn’t very well written, maybe that’s what they’re referring to?

SURPRISE! You’re going back into Moria again! Let’s kidnap some random orc chief and drag his rear end all the way through the hostile territory we’re invading so we can maybe cut a deal with the servants of Sauron, that won’t ever go horribly wrong!

The Mirkwood portion of the Epic is one of the story highlights of the game for me, personally--it's the first time you've really gotten to travel with a group of characters who aren't in the source material for an extended period of time, and it keeps paying off in spades. Volume III does it better with the Grey Company and Horn and Nona, but this part of Volume II is where it started.

And of course it goes horribly wrong, that was obvious from the start. This is pretty much true of all of Volume II, though they're still paying off some of those threads (pay close attention to the Mordor Erebor Allegiance quests when you get there).

Everybody keeps talking about how terrible Rohan content is, so I'd resolved myself to skipping from Mirkwood to Gondor with a level skip. Is it worth going back and doing? Assuming all I really care about is story content (I'm playing this like a single-player ARPG, so I don't necessarily care about missing trait points from Rohan, etc.).

While the mounted combat portions suck, the atmosphere is pretty cool, and some of the quest lines are cool.

One thing I've noticed as a very very early game player is that each of the zones seems to have a deed that grants 2000 virtue points for doing most of the quests there. Does that hold up throughout the rest of the game, and are those deeds particularly worth pursuing?

I actually went in with the intent of being fairly completionist about quests, because my initial impression is that the questing is very good for me, a nerd that likes to just be immersed in middle earth bullshit. But I'm getting the impression that some zones are like, really bad.

Hello Sailor

The storyline quests are pretty good about dragging you through most of the quest hubs in a given zone and there are far more quests available than you need for the regional metadeeds. If you do 2-3 side quests per story quest, that should be enough to get it for most zones. If not, you can always come back later and breeze through a few more if you find yourself wanting more virtue xp or cash shop points.

I generally do the quest metadeed while I'm following the storyline, then revisit zones as I feel like it to knock out a few of the slayer/exploration deeds and quests I might have passed up the first time through. Coming back to early slayer deeds is great for working class deeds that use abilities which aren't part of your normal combat routine.

You'll still be able to do the epic quests, including the big wedding instance, and run around Minas Tirith (Midsummer). For the festival quests you'll have to wait until next summer. Most of them are generic and forgettable but there's one series (the Banquet quests) that you'll want to make sure to pick up at that point.

I would expect midsummer to get extended as a result of the downtime. And holidays generally get an encore later in the year, not sure about this one though.
