wtf am I looking at here... is this a closed parking garage roller door? Why are people repeatedly ramming it? Who's that guy squatting near it? Content (personal experience): Found a cracked power outlet wall plate in my rented apartment. Turned off power, removed it, replaced it, turned power back on, tested socket with multimeter and device. Worked great. Went to screw plate back to wall... Noticed that one of the screws was broken in half. Weird. Never mind, I've got plenty of screws just like it! Pop a new screw in and start screwing... FLASH/BANG! The power trips. I find that one of the wires from the socket runs directly under the loving screw hole. The dickhead that installed this KNEW THIS and just snipped their screw in half - job done! Of course, my mistake not to turn power off even just to put the screws back in, but I learned a valuable lesson about just how stupid people can be. I was always fairly careful, but now I'm ultra ultra cautious with anything electrical.

The Lone Badger posted:Have the managed to get the ordnance off or are we expecting a kaboom at some point? It was in port for maintenance, so the ordnance is almost certainly off. Still, there's always a surprising amount of stuff on a ship that can burn, and heat really builds up in a confined area below decks.

Lol still at it? What’s left to burn by now? Or is it sustainable just on the steel if it got hot enough?

The stream just went to break (it's a local news stream, but it's just a live stream of the firefighting when it's on) but before it did it looked like they were dropping on the island? Presumably they think it's worth trying to save something, or at least put it out so salvage can begin sooner. There was also a small but noticeable list. There's another stream linked below, but it's, uh, a little foggy right now and you can't see anything. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0DhWEB01rk

The ship is docked right outside of central San Diego and the whole city stinks like a burning computer right now. Even if they're ready to scrap the ship, they need to put it out just to spare the city from a week of breathing toxic smoke. https://twitter.com/NWSSanDiego/status/1282656748604514304?s=20

There's typically linoleum on the decks, layers of paint all over, cabling running along passageways and in spaces, piping for fuels and oils, etc., in addition to furnishings and supplies in the spaces.

It's a navy ship, so presumably it's sitting in the water. Why don't they just drill holes in it and sink it? That would put the fire out and then they could just salvage it and refloat it. Boom, problem solved!
