Serious question: Is that a real thing? Are there ex-Falun Gong escapees? Is it that bad within the cult? Are they held against their will? etc.

I knew it was Scientology with Chinese Characteristics, but I thought that was more to do with how nutty they are, and how they expect money from you. Does it also jealously guard it's secrets and members like Scientology also.

Sorry if I just whiffed on a joke. But I really don't know much about Falun Gong/Dafa.

On this. Isn't it super hard to leave The Party anyway? As in, you have to provide reasons, and it takes a long time to process paperwork, and there are restrictions on what you can and can't do and say even once you have dealt with the rigmarole they put you through. And they still keep tabs on you once you have left, and you are still subject to all the rules etc. I also heard that if you are a low level Party member, you have to apply for permission and fill in paperwork for any sort of travel/work change/house move/etc. anyway? Coz the higher ups in the CCP assume you are a security risk anyway.

They keep my Father in Law's passport in a safe, and he has to fill out a form if he wants it to leave the country.

He also has to list all his foreign relatives and their addresses. We gave him a fake one to use for us.

Sorry to be rude.

But by "they" do you mean The Party, or you FIL's family?

Coz if your FIL keeps his passport in a safe in his own house, then that's cool. Just being careful.

But if the safe in which your Father in Law's passport is at party headquarters, then loving hell, that must suck for him, and by extension your spouse.

By they I mean the party. They keep his passport at headquarters in his town and he has to check it out for his trip and then check it back in.

He also has to to do classes on the Xi Jinping thought app every night or he'll get in trouble.

Sorta but not exactly. You might be thinking of Tiktok having been recently pulled from HK app stores and replaced with Douyin, the original Chinese version of Tiktok that afaik is totally walled off from what the rest of the world gets. idk if that means that Tiktok no longer functions there without a VPN or whatever, but it still indicates that they're trying to accelerate HK being subsumed into the PRC's tech ecosystem.

Correction: although Tiktok did pull out of HK to comply with new legislation, it hasn't been replaced with Douyin and there are no immediate plans to make that happen. However, people in HK have been using Douyin for years via account switching already, and Tiktok never caught up to it in popularity there

The UK will "bear the consequences" for scrapping its extradition treaty with Hong Kong, China's ambassador has warned, adding that Boris Johnson's government had "contravened international law and the basic norms governing international relations."

Dominic Raab, the UK foreign secretary, on Monday said the UK would no longer extradite anyone to Hong Kong after China imposed a contested security law there which has already seen hundreds of pro-democracy protestors arrested. He also said the UK would stop selling arms to Hong Kong.

China's ambassador to the UK Liu Xiaoming responded by saying that the UK had "blatantly interfered in China's internal affairs" and threatened unspecified consequences.

Chinese Communist Party officials indicated last week that Beijing could respond by placing economic sanctions on British firms which operate in China, including Jaguar Land Rover and GlaxoSmithKline.

according to their own statements, very few people in HK used either and they don't even have plans to officially launch douyin there (but people who have it will use it without issue I assume).

You cannot download douyin in HK but you can download Tiktok (although it won't work).

The main user base in HK for Tiktok was Filipino domestic helpers who liked to use it as a means of relieving stress. You can still access it with a VPN and a phone without a SIM card but it's too much hassle for most of them. Just another way life got shittier in HK for domestic helpers.
