What I mean by economic determinism is the idea that history MUST progress through certain economic conditions. So therefore slavery MUST end, or you MUST have a bourgeoise revolution before a socialist one. Marx himself started to question that before his death as he thought about Russia, and 1917 would prove that line of thought correct.

Now Marx obviously wrote during the war about how the North was acting as an agent of history, but there’s a big difference from it basically being a predestined outcome and a tendency for history to move in a certain direction. A lot of early 20th century historians (and leftists) were firmly in the former camp, but Marx was more in the latter camp.

Oh yeah, it's kind of tough to see what the determinists can hang their hat on anymore besides his early work. If 1917 didn't prove that it's a whole lot more complicated than that then Mao certainly did

the dissolution of the ussr happened because state enterprise managers encroached into their fiefs getting ever larger personal kickbacks and eventually went "wait why don't we just take these for ourselves", the red army old guard tried a failed counter-revolution and we got modern plutocratic russia.

the idea that the population of the ussr lived under conditions analogous to chattel slavery is anachronic, socialist state companies doled out wages much the same as private enterprise with the difference in the directors board being under political control, acquiescence was bought not with promises of freedom through capital accumulation but through promises of material safety for all, protection from evil capitalists and eventually real freedom when the world revolution was completed or whatever

without a set time or concerted effort to end the fiefdoms it was inevitable that they’d fail given that they were predicated on an imbalance of power that facilitated kickbacks in the first place

still better than what we or they have now, certainly

drat maybe they should have had those positions term limited and elected. maybe some kind of workers council (or 'soviet' if you will) could meet and elect their own managers. guess they just didn't think to give all power to the soviets

This is a known factor, but unfortunately with the capitalist west lurking at the border waiting to strike and steal everything not nailed down the USSR was pretty much forced into its shape

The only left theory that addresses this problem of omnimalevolent exterior forces without setting up a strong militarized state are the Posadists

i worked for Walmart for a long time, and basically BF to the week before Xmas are bigly important. iirc our store made as much in those three or four weeks as it did during the entire rest of the year, and i know that Target was similar. BF is so important to the actual sales of the individual stores that we'd start getting poo poo prepped for it on the first day of October. i don't pretend to be smart about this kind of thing, i read this thread to see what people who actually understand things think, but it seems like it's going to be extremely bad for the actual stores themselves.

which really is just going to accelerate what they're already doing, eliminating as many higher-paying (and by higher-paying i mean people making $12.50 an hour instead of $10 an hour) positions as possible with automation and just good old fashioned pushing work that managers would do onto the people downstream. it was a joke at the stores i worked at that if the managers gathered all of the employees for a big special meeting about how awesome the store was doing or how some tax-cut had helped one of their dumb metrics it just meant that a bunch of people were going to have their jobs eliminated and forced to either quit and go somewhere else or take a pay-cut back down to what they'd be making if they were just a regular associate and not one of the myriad sub-divisions of management.

i dunno, just something that's been on my mind and i needed to :justpost: my dumb thoughts about it.
