If you really want to maximise your Blade aquisition chances save any epic cores until the midgame, you get a trickle of pity unique blades from opening cores up until you have a certain number, once you've not had a pull in a good long time that'll be the time to start cracking open the epic cores

Do your best to try and learn the gameplay systems, then watch a combat explanation 50 hours in that'll make you go "Oh so THAT'S how that works"

Anyway best tips I can give you is: always try and inflict Break first before you start doing the Elemental attacks. This is what will begin the Fusion Combo and let you deal much more damage. Also, instead of letting all three auto-attacks happen, your Arts become available quicker if you quickly flick the movement stick as soon as your first attack hits and cancel your animation, then repeat. Once you get Mythra, use the Love Source item you got from DLC to quickly unlock all of her skills and go through the list to get them done, she's insanely strong. As far as normal Pouch Items go, you'll always want to have stuff that Recharges Arts by 0.X amounts of seconds on everyone, it's generally found on dessert-type food. As for Aux Cores, equip whatever looks good but one of the best things you can do is equip Hunter's Chemistry on your reserve Blades. This is one of the very few aux cores that have an effect even if they're not your active blade, and allow you to hit max affinity in battle super quickly.

There are a couple extra DLC characters that function as blades, but as they are not actually blades plotwise, you can freely reassign them to other characters. Do activities with the Nopon Archsage to unlock a few, and a Tora-related questline has another.

Also get used to switching blades during combat. Prioritize the skills that start some arts ready-to-use, and anything that fills your gauges.

Please tell me there's a viable tank that isn't Tora.

Even if his progression wasn't inexplicably gated behind a stupid minigame, I'd die happy knowing I'd never have to hear his monotone "mehmehmeh" in the middle of battle ever again.

Yes, you'll get a driver who is more of a dodge tank to Tora's HP tank, and is perfectly viable for like... 90% of things.

Tora is basically always better though, especially after he finishes his final poppi upgrade side quest, with even a minimal amount of effort in the dumb mini game.

Alright, that's good. I'm aware of the upcoming party members and either would be fine.

Is the "90% of things" a matter of upper-end scaling or is the dodge tank just a worse choice throughout?

The most important bit that isn't explicit in XB2 is that every character has a skill that lets them cancel attacks and arts into other arts, and it's one of the most important skills for the battle system. It doesn't mean "cancel" in the normal sense of "not do" but in the fighting game sense of cancelling the animation, in this case with significant bonuses. Getting this skill makes the combat system a lot more engaging.

I found dodge tank to just be a worse choice; The big thing honestly is less 'dodge versus health tank' and more the specifics of how Tora fits into both Driver and Blade Combos, and the game's dumb gendered AI.

Basically, if you're running the dodge tank and you want easy control of your combos, you need to sit around and wait for her to drop Break on the enemy, then have Rex Topple, Launch, And then either Smash himself, or hope that your dodge tank has decided that today is the day she's gonna switch blades and use Smash.

Tora by contrast, you can equip Rex and whoever else is in the party with a blade to apply Break, let Tora do the topple, and then just mash Launch, and let Tora Smash. Or, if you prefer, by endgame, you can let Tora do the Break, then you do the Topple, Tora will immediately hit Launch, and you can switch to Smash.

It's just much more fluid and allows for much more consistent combo locking.

You get the character that replaces him once you're on Mor Ardain. Said character is a TON of fun to control yourself once you get them a good katana blade and can gently caress around with dodge tanking and self healing.

This this this. Once you get those skills on whoever you're controlling, it's like you just got out of the tutorial and are now in the real game. Rush those on Rex ASAP, his is called Arts Chain and costs 3000 SP.

Eventually you're cancelling attacks into arts and cancelling those into each other and into blade changes while rolling through combos to consistently expand your timing windows and poo poo just flows while the enemy is spinning in the air or something.

It's not that bad because Morag has break on at least two good weapon types (Brighid's sword whips, and ether cannons) while Rex gets topple by default, smash like 50 minutes into the plot and axes give him launch. You also need someone to be a break specialist because everyone and their tyrant dog has break resistance late game, which can be negated through accessories.

But yeah, Tora should be better than Morag lategame because his weapons' movesets are really good and Poppi is stupid powerful.
The drawbacks are 1) Tora is in your party and 2) gently caress me the grind for Poppi's spare parts is something else.

I got definitive edition having never played the original version before and turned on expert mode since that's what everyone said to do online, but I'm kind of lost on when i should be upping levels. It seems like every time I run into a boss I end up underleveled, and then beat it on the next try easily since I know all the gimmicks now and am at the proper level. (Assuming proper level is equal to the boss/one lower.) Is this the right cycle or is there something else I should be changing?

Also are skill levels important enough that I should be looking up a guide or can I just wing them? I get huge decision paralysis since I have no idea what's good on a character.

That's pretty much what I'm doing and it seems to be working well for me. It is kinda fun to go all "That was only 10% of my true power", jump up 5 levels then clown on an annoying boss or unique monster.

Barudak
May 7, 2007

People recommend expert mode because it means you dont spend 90% of the game hideously overleveled before getting stuck several levels below the final boss. In exchange though, you will likely fight some bosses, lose, then do an anime power up to obliterate them.

The other choice is turn on casual mode because as far as I can tell it just removes the level difference penalties

I’ve spent more time researching party information than actually playing XC2 and I’m getting tired of it. I was planning on using Rex/Tora/Zeke as my main party through the story but I kept reading Tora’s tough to use until endgame and his voice lines are driving me insane.

Which is a better party for story completion, not worrying about post-game superbosses until later? Rex/Morag/Zeke, Rex/Morag/Nia, or should I just stick with my original Rex/Tora/Zeke plan?

Anything works honestly. This is an easy game that doesn't particularly require optimization, go with your favourites. I went Rex/Nia/Morag most game, even if gameplay wise Nia is objectively the worst of the drivers until Rex can remove Drommarch from her loadout.

They seriously did Drommarch a dirty in his gameplay utility, he's a glorified generic and the twin rings moveset is subpar. He deserved better.

The best party is any party with Nia in it. You don't even need Rex if you don't want him in your party either. I benched him after he got the ability to equip any Blade because all of his Special Hero Powers were getting boring. Zero regrets.

Who's your mate?!
I've not played a game in the series before, and only a handful of JRPG's, so thought why not try something a bit different and downloaded the Definitive Edition on Switch. It's not what I expected at all.

I naively assumed the combat would be similar to what I experienced in the FF7 Remake, but obviously it's nothing like that and is way more strategic and something you don't feel instantly in control of. Pretty sure it's going to take me a while a get to grips with it, and get out of that hack and slash mentality I'm used to. There's going to be a lot to learn.

But, it's definitely different to the stuff I normally play, so I got my wish with that. I'm intrigued to see how my playthrough goes and how I feel about the game after a few more hours.

You had a choice of two paths, did you take the easier one or the harder one?

There’s definitely an rear end in a top hat unique enemy that hangs out like right on the path you have to take for the story but other than that I don’t remember it being too terrible.

It was fine once I committed to just mob training through the obnoxiously dense islands. Individual fights weren't a problem.

I probably took the harder path but the navigation is such a pain in the rear end I didn't realise that was the implication behind the two quest markers...

There are the Traveling Bard merchants scattered around the world; they sell stuff that was obnoxiously rare in the base game like Overdrive protocols, the master role mods for Poppi so you don't have to grind as much Tiger Tiger, and most importantly, for 200k xp each, an item that will let each character equip +1 accessory.
