Scrolled down and saw the auto-playing video after the rear of the truck was already out of frame. Wondered real hard what the OSHA content was until the video started looped and I audibly gasped.

Trying to figure out what happened it. It seems like the 'burst' came from the empty side of the tray? Was there some liquid in there that superheated when the molten metal was poured in?

Definitely comes from the side that's being filled, I assume there must be some moisture in that side of the mold that instantly vaporised when the pour got to a certain level

When the molten metal hit the a water droplet it was turned to steam instantly and splashed the metal out.

Cartoon Man posted:Imgur said it’s cause the container wasn’t preheated. Yeah, that's what happens when there's a little bit of moisture somewhere in the mold. Obviously the molten metal is hot enough to instantly flash it into steam, and steam takes up 1700x as much volume as the same mass of liquid water, so even a tiny invisible drop will go bang and spit hot metal at you. And that is why you always preheat the mold to boil off any water.

the cop in that car admitted he was looking at his phone instead of the road. he was suspended with pay while they conducted "an investigation" but not charged with anything. i'm sure the same standard would apply if a random citizen ran over a bicycle cop waiting at the intersection. lmao

incidentally, this is also exactly why tricycle gear airplanes are vastly more common than tailwheel airplanes (and why if you own a taildragger your insurance is absurd).

Son of Thunderbeast posted:Also, make sure that there's oxygen in any confined space you're wriggling in to. No issue there for that cave the swimmer crawled in to, but one time I nearly asphyxiated in the space between the hull and the deck on a boat that was being constructed (we needed to x-ray a hull weld repair and that was the only way I was going to be able to place the film). They opened up the hatch and I just slipped in without thinking, "hey, how long has this been sealed up?" I crawled about 10 feet in before my vision started to get blurry at the edges and I noticed I felt funny. I had to drop all my equipment where it was and pull myself back to the hatch before I blacked out. So why weren't you using a gas meter in a confined space?
