Dammit, Associated Press, I need pictures or video!

Is this not something that would look real dramatic and instead just make everything slightly hazy but really terrible to breathe?

Saharan dust is supposed to blow into the Americas. It's actually a key component for the wildly lush and diverse rainforests in the Western hemisphere. So it's good for a lot of growth of various species but an unfortunate harbinger of doom nonetheless.

I can't speak for plankton, but I know that Saharan dust is why the Amazon exists the way it does.

I know this is from a month ago, but it’s on the same page so whatever.

The Sahara has phosphate minerals. Morocco mines a shitload of them, including via the world’s longest conveyor belt system from Bou Craa to the sea near Laayoune.

Neat! I guess I just think "desert = sand = silica" which is probably super-unfair to deserts. I'm so uneducated :( I blame the schools

nah it’s gonna degrade into a tropical storm right before it hits because Hawaii always avoids these things somehow or another.

in this case it’s because it has to pass through colder waters that happen to dip down just enough to buffer the islands

the NOAA people have explicitly said that their models don't take into account the volcano because they don't think it makes a big difference, but they also are always horribly wrong and can't predict the hurricanes at all once they get close to this islands, so who knows.
