Can someone educate me or post a good link about why the three gorges dam is so unsafe/at risk of failure? I know it’s a huge dam but beyond that nothing

Can't have dam chat in the china thread without talking about the Banqiao Dam disaster: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1975_Banqiao_Dam_failure Everybody's favorite part is when they called in airstrikes against downstream dams to relieve pressure, the guy who made that call had balls made of, well, reinforced concrete. Also I would like to see a transcript of the phone call to the airforce C/O who dispatched the bombers. "You want us to WHAT in the next 30 minutes?!"

Looks like it probably went fine, although since it's China they naturally cut the feed right around the time of a visible burst that was probably the booster separation So the easiest part is over

I know it’s a huge dam but beyond that nothing So I started the dam chat, and I can't even say exactly why it may be at risk of failure other than China is having historic flooding and the typical stuff about the kinds of corners that sometimes get cut in chinese construction projects. I can say that I went on a cruise down the yangtze in the summer of 2008 right before the dam was completed and it is unbelievably huge and holding back an unbelievable amount of water even when it isn't flooding. An assload of people and infrastructure are downstream of it. I have no idea if this is just dumb rumor or not, but if it were to actually fail it would be one of, if not the, largest man made disaster in modern history.

I have a friend who is an engineer who works with concrete a lot. She says that the Chinese explanation—“the dam has deformed a little but is within design tolerance”—is not a good explanation because the whole point of concrete is that it isn’t supposed to deform unless you’re putting it under more pressure than it’s rated for. The dam is also anchored by porous limestone, which could absorb the water and cause landslides.

I don't know what I'm talking about either, but it destroyed a lot of unique ecological habitat, it was supposed to control the flood risk for places downstream in perpetuity (poo poo flooded badly this year anyways), it was constructed in haste and just by being there it creates the massive risk of its failure. Altogether a bad idea that was only made because it was really big and impressive (to the CCP brass.)

By contrast, the main engineer said that the dam was build such that the concrete mixture hardens (or whatever it does) as is spends time under water, and this is just the first time that happens and the dam will be more solid going forward. And also, that that's all planned and people should chill out, because the dam can hold double the pressure it does now and is build in such a way that it becomes more solid as water pushes against it etc. etc. I have no, none, zero idea about what is true or not.

Realistically, the CCP is going to pour every resource into making sure the drat doesn't fail (at this stage anyway). But can it be just patched up in perpetuity?

I'd be more concerned with something like global warming increasing the chances of a massive deluge that either exceeds capacity or somehow exposes some other underlying weakness that otherwise wouldn't have been a problem. Certainly hope that doesn't happen though as the consequences would be not great.

I've always wondered how they do the superbanning. I tried to install an apk of Google Play onto my Chinese phone and if you tried to install it, the phone just shut the installation down immediately without any notification. That was the only install that would do it.
