NASA released an official congratulation to the PRC for the Mars launch and it is precision guided to hurt Chinese Face

quote:

“With today’s launch, China is on its way to join the community of international scientific explorers at Mars,” Bridenstine tweeted. “The United States, Europe, Russia, India, and soon the UAE will welcome you to Mars to embark on an exciting year of scientific discovery. Safe travels Tianwen-1!”

The mere acknowledgement that India (and if all goes well, the UAE) in particular beat them to Mars is a massive humiliation considering how racist the CCP is. They can process "white countries" beating them but South Asians and Arabs also beating them causes brains to break

India is easily the third best space program in the world right now, possibly the second best.

I've got a pocket full of cheese🧀, and a garden full of trees🌴.

Maybe I am misunderstanding "face" and all that jazz, (because I am a foreigner, and only spent 2 1/2 years in China, so I cannot possibly understand). But I don't think that tweet will particularly hurt the feelings of the CCP.

Yes, I can see the pointed language, designed to belittle and mock the rocket, it's just that I don't think the CCP will care too much about that. They got a congratulatory tweet from the unnamed country. This shows how wonderful and awesome the Chinest Space Program is! They wish they could do what we are doing, (even though they have done it before and are even saying so.) etc.

Look at how the CCP reacted to their demonstrably pissweak and insulting 2 grimy boxes of masks sent as "aid" to Syria(I think?). The fact that it was lovely was not the point, the point was great and glorious China did something, and had a photo of middle manager-type officials in front of it. Any thing else is just western propaganda and jealousy.

So whilst I do think the tweet is pointedly funny, the CCP is far to far up it's own arse to care or even notice.

Honestly, what China's space program is accomplishing is impressive. Space is hard, and getting to Mars at all is pretty impressive. A lot of countries beat them there but only 3 (US, Russia, India) can do it all on their own without a partner. That said, I can't root for them when they are coupled to such an incredibly lovely government. Building their launch systems in such a way to endanger people when something goes wrong. Using their space program to advance rocket weaponry in such an irresponsible way. They're stated desire to colonize and capitalize ownership of major celestial bodies. It's a loving shame.

Which mission, the one to mars or the one to liquidate disharmonious undesirables? Because those are both right up certain Austrian alleys.

They have to get rid of those ride sharing bikes somehow. Might as well try to setup a franchise and cook the books.

"Getting to Mars" is easy. You just need a big enough rocket. Landing on Mar is the really hard part. Only Soviet Russia and NASA has made successful landings. ESA did land a probe which failed to deploy.

Up until recently their rockets have been bigger versions ICBMs with face melting propellants as they didn't have the tech for anything else.

Getting to Mars is actually quite hard, it doesn't take much of an error to miss entirely when going to another planet. A number of missions have failed to ever arrive. Landing is brutally difficult, NASA's still the only agency that has landed a functioning probe. Mars is the worst of all worlds for landings. Too much atmosphere to just ignore it and land like you would on the Moon, but the atmosphere is also so thin you can't just parachute down like you're doing an Earth entry. Also it all has to be pre-programmed and done automatically given light delay. Only about half the missions sent to Mars have succeeded. I won't be surprised at all if the UAE and China ones fail, it's not an easy thing to do.

I would be less surprised if the China landing fails than surprised anyone actually heard about it failing. I feel like the most likely scenario is that it splits into the Martian surface and the CCP is like “what lander?”

Getting to Mars is quite hard, although at a certain point is fundamentally just about math and timing, which the Chinese outsourced to Europe and Brazil in terms of coordinating its orbital trajectory to reach Mars

Now it's all about the quality of the hardware that they sent, and while the scientific instruments on the rover are mostly foreign, all of the other stuff is presumably Chinese, which uhh

The challenge now is "can it get to Mars without being ruined by interplanetary radiation"

Honestly surprised that they don't just skip the press releases until they have a successful landing/ transmission/whatever. Then when the mission is a success they just play the highlight reel.

Also Trump gonna Trump. He doesn't care nor understand foreign policy. The idea one would analysis his moves other than grift, his idea of "Winning", raw wilful unashamed ignorance, generous helpings of racism and protecting his ego, to look strong at all costs is an exercise in pointlessness. He literally thinks tear gassing protestors for a photo op at a church or sending goons to Portland makes him look strong. His entire response to the ccp virus. Almost every decision can be traced to those things. Even his current reversal is window dressing, he ain't being sombre, his ego finally took a hit. His trade war was to look strong and personal gains never the economics. All the aggressive moves on China are clearly not from him but everyone around him.

Years back I thought he was mercurial, I was very wrong.

Thanks for the support, although I don't think it really matters what evidence I post at this point, since the only people who reply are also the people that aren't receptive to evidence. Like they literally just pretend I didn't post evidence, and then reiterate "Why won't you post any evidence?" At best I get "Why won't you post any TRUE evidence" which is obviously defining "true" as "things that reaffirm the position I already hold."

The D&D thread isn't the overtly fascist one, that's the C-SPAM thread. The D&D thread comprises mostly people who are reasonably intelligent but whose sum knowledge of China and macroeconomics comes down to the fact that they read When China Rules The World and a lot of Economist articles circa 2011 and haven't updated their views since.

I believe that these people can have their views changed, although obviously there are still people who can't on account of their Terminal Posting Syndrome

Completely appropos of nothing:

Does anybody here know of any good/famous Chinese cartoons?

I know of Xi Yang Yang. The cartoon where a bunch of goats live in a field and occasionally a wolf, (who is constantly beaten by his wife), tries to catch them.

And Boonie Bears, where two big brown bears live in the woods and spoil the attempts of what looks to me like a French Canadian logger to chop down trees.

But are there other ones as big or famous? Even with my high school students, (when I was in Fuzhou a couple of years ago), I could always use Xi Yang Yang as a reference, so I was wondering if there were others.
