can I play too?
My grandfather pre-ordered a (now my) miata, mid 89 production date. When he passed I got it. My parents discovered a box of his things, one documenting his pre-order and ownership/maintenance.
Anyway, there are a bunch of Miata magazines in it. Many many magazines. Anyone interested in these?

I'm always telling my wife that a Miata is practical, and see? You can take two of your friends, and their gear, skiing in a Miata. Miata is always the answer.

That poor woman, attracted by that lovely robin's egg blue, is trying to hit on two gay men who took their convertible up to a mountain for skiing and parked in the snow at the bottom of the slope.

I especially love how the guy in the red jacket is bent over with his skis, as though he's about to slide his skis into the trunk. They're going to go through the ski-hatch in the rear bulkhead, like a BMW has!

That cover illustration is a mess, and I love it.

Maybe he's trying to hit on the lady bc she slammed into the car and got stuck; she's wondering who the hell would park their car right at the bottom of the slope and he's more than happy to answer all her questions.

Unrelated: have Miata prices been crazy high lately? I'm about to be in the market and everything with three pedals and under 150k miles seems to be over $5k.

Someone on my local CL posted up this ad a couple times the last few months: https://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/cto/d/dallas-stop-over-paying-for-miatas/7150587913.html

quote:

With the recent Covid virus, it seems like Miata prices have skyrocketed. But just because people are asking ridiculous prices, doesn't mean the cars are worth that or anyone is buying them for that much.

Let me clear some things up.

First Gen NA (1990-1997) with over 100k miles should not cost more than $3500 for one in excellent condition.
Second Gen NB (1999-2005) with over 100k miles should not cost more than $4000 for one in excellent condition.
Third Gen NC (2006-2015) prices vary significantly since the NC3 is still a relatively new car, but an NC1 should not cost more than $5000 for one with over 100k miles.

Mods such as wheels/suspension/rollbars might add value for a very specific buyer but generally not for most people.

Automatic Miatas are almost worthless, especially the NA.

People pay on average $800-$1000 for a hard top. Maybe up to $1200 for a pristine example with headliner and defrost.

Stop encouraging these ridiculous prices for such cheap cars.

I gave up finding an NC3 for a reasonable price and instead I'm just dumping money into my NC1. I was really looking forward to HID lights, an auto-dimming mirror, and LSD... oh well. I did get cash offer on my NC1 about four weeks ago. Almost what I paid for it. But that would leave me miata-less.

That post might have been right about NAs 5-10 years ago but clean NAs were already on the upswing prior to the rona.

While you can get a fairly-priced NC2, there is no such thing as a reasonably-priced NC3 from my recent searches. IMO you're better off trying to find a high-mileage ND1 instead of an NC3.

Yeah that looks perfectly fine, thanks! I pussied out on the Pro Race set for now, not so much because of the size but the offset was ET30 IIRC and I'm only allowed ET40 on paper. So I'd have to get special approval for them and that's :effort:

This year sucks. Just when I finally got all the bits I ordered, my mechanic and his wife are sick with COVID. So now all this lives in my kitchen - pads, rotors, new shoes, and a full FM Stage 2 suspension kit.

It's still too early to tell how they're going to handle it. I've been on Google Hangouts with both and he said it's the sickest they've ever been. Going to try and do their grocery shopping for them and I think we've got their neighbor on the hook for dog-sitting if things really go downhill. :ohdear:

Man, I wonder if I should put full coverage on mine. It's got ~167k miles and will look so drat good when I'm done, but a rock chip could total it at that rate. There's so much sweat equity in this car that I've gone far beyond the realm of rational decisions about it.

I KNOW THIS ONE!!!!

It's the little foam donuts under the high mount brake lamp clips that hold it to the rear 'deck' that took a poo poo. You'll need to pop the light off (find a guide) and replace the clips/little foam donuts. I'll post a PN in a minute.

quote:

I ended up using a 7mm deep socket on a 6" extension to collapse the legs of the clips and used some shims to keep pressure on the clips as I got them to release. This worked pretty well

here you go Part number B25251PJ5A

Talked to the guy at the machine shop. He really knows his stuff. He knew the crank was forged just by looking at it. He says the crank is missing 0.020" off it's diameter which eliminates ACL bearings immediate as that's as far out as they go. So I'm going with King bearings. I'll be using the +0.75 or +1.00mm bearings for the conrods. I'll probably be able to get away with +0.25mm for the main journals. Machinist says the failure looks like it was long and drawn out, with no immediate signs until the very end. Likely low pressure situation, not zero pressure.

My maintenance plans on my NB didn't survive the first encounter with the enemy, as always. I couldn't loosen the alternator bolt to change the belt. And I discovered that I left the oil filter wrench somewhere, after draining the oil, oops. I never tried but I assume it should be possible to change the filter later, with only losing the oil in the filter?
E: I don't want to do the "stab filter with screwdriver" trick in case it fails and makes a huge mess.

At least I found the coolant I bought a few years ago. FL22 is fine for the NB, right? There's conflicting information but it looks like it's newer stuff that's compatible with older Mazdas.

Anyone wanna take a guess at what's wrong with my ND before I take it to the dealer?

Driving back from the canyons today an issue started. At low speeds I hear a loud clunking at the rear right wheel. The sound increases with wheel speed. At higher speeds the sound turns into more of a high pitched screeching sound. The sound is louder when transitioning from braking to acceleration or vice versa. The sound also gets louder when cornering. The rotors look completely fine. I also can't see anything visibly wrong with anything. I haven't had a chance to jack up the car yet to have a better look though.

The car only has 10k miles on it so I'm not sure what it could be. I also didn't hit any potholes while driving. I have aftermarket suspension as well.

Any ideas?

If it's an ND, it should still be under warranty? Might be wrong about that, though.

Small pebble got into the brake shield, or a bad wheelbearing?

Virgil Vox
Dec 8, 2009

Wheel bearing? How are your brake pads? Doesn’t seem like tire rubbing but did you lower it a ton?

Partial Octopus
Feb 4, 2006

I'm thinking it's a wheel bearing as well. I actually just raised the ride height. It's only about an inch lower than stock. I plan on getting it into a dealer this weekend if I can. A bit worried they might blame whatever is wrong on the suspension though...

Don't wheelbearings usually make more a low pitched moaning noise? Pebble in brake shield sounds more likely. I had a bitch of one on the BMW and finally got it out by rapidly accelerating backwards a couple of times.

You guys were right about the lug nuts. One of them was completely missing. I'm guessing the shop I had it at didn't tighten them properly. The others seemed adequately tight and the wheel was firm against the hub. I'm curious if the dealer will find any other issues.

This was the spun journal. Minty fresh.

It was -0.030" on the journals, -0.010 on the mains.
If youre ordering bearings that translates to -0.75 mil and -0.25 mil respectively. ACL only goes to -0.50 so I had to get King bearings. They only go to -1.00 mil so it nearly got trashed.
