Incredible how my hippie mate keeps inviting me and Mrs turnbeug to bush doofs and every time he gets confused why I go off at him and hang up. I'm seriously concerned he's hosed his short term memory so badly he doesn't actually remember it. Dumb oval office got busted at Jindabyne last night and is posting Ned Kelly memes on FB this morning. loving idiots

It's pissing down rain and it's my neighbour's daughter's birthday today so she's bound to ask me to dry washing for her this evening. Joke's on her. I got a new dryer and the old one is sitting in my hallway waiting. It doesn't work well but it's dried my washing and hers for the last few winters, so I'm not going to get sucked into drying her washing when she can just take my old dryer.

Agreed, this is definitely above and beyond for neighborly duties. My best neighbour would invite me over for cocktails, free appliances and laundry service is incredible.

I don't have a dryer atm but i got one of those washing machines that only has cold water intake and heats it in the machine so its crazy expensive to run if the solar panels aren't getting a full go so usually I am fiercely opposed to getting any washing done if there's even a hint of a cloud in the sky anyway

I like how it's also like the joke's on the neighbors, I'm not doing their drying as I'm giving them a free dryer instead lol

One of my neighbors drops around free bread and bakery items from his volunteer gig, and another dropped off Easter eggs though so neighbors aren't all bad.

For my contribution I keep the noise down and we take the bins out (which most people in our building neglect to do)

We don't even have a dryer, just an airer :saddowns:

this happens a lot to a bloke a few houses down from me. Wouldn't know him from a 70 year old pile of bricks normally even though he sold me a surround sound system thats pretty grouse for cheap, just bc whenever I see him i get too hyped up by his two big boofy saggy blokes. I've even got him saved in my phone and remember his name and everything bc the dog across from him gets out a lot. Just hit my limit for human faces a while back I reckon.

I haven't seen a washing machine that takes hot water for 20+ years. I'm new to the dishwasher game, but the one I got 10 years ago only has cold water too, and taking hot water was never a feature mentioned on any of them.
I didn't know machines that took hot water had been made for decades. Surely it wouldn't be that different to the energy used by your hot water system refilling?

I have gas hot water and my washing machine has both a hot and cold inlet. It's only two years old.

The dishwasher only uses small amount of water but I imagine it's about the same cost per litre heated as using an electric kettle, so it adds up a bit over the course of 3 months.

The dishwasher was the only change in my usage over and above the same billing period last year and I was running it more than once a day when I couldn't put my hands in anything hotter than lukewarm water. I just didn't expect it to be quite so expensive.

My daughter's electricity bill exploded when she got a new washing machine which heats its own water. I expect it's fine in places where electricity is cheap, which NSW isn't.

No dishwashers take hot water, but top load washing machines often do.
If you have electric hot water then there's no benefit but a lot of people have gas or solar hot water.
What I want to know is why we can't get gas dryers here.

Strong Convections

Oh, that makes sense - I don't have gas and top loader washing machines use too much water (and you can't use the space above them), so I've been on electric front loaders.

Chewbecca posted:

Nope. Maybe some of the time and certain fabrics. But if you've got anyone with asthma/dust mite allergy in the household you work out pretty quick that cold doesn't wash out the allergens. You don't need to kill the mites by ratcheting it up to 80C or something - but 30C dissolves a lot of dirt in clothing/sheets/towels that cold can't wash out even with the best of soaps.

It's soap.
There's a few possibilities
1) you're adding too much soap to your wash (front loaders need much less soap that top loaders)
2) you've got a build up of too much soap over time and now there are reservoirs of it in the machine
3) you're overfilling the machine so there's not enough actual agitation so the soap just sticks on the outer clothes
4) you're washing in cold with one of the above factors - soap doesn't dissolve as well in cold
5) all of the above

Try putting it on a 30-40C cycle and 'half' fill the machine. You could even try not putting soap in - if it still foams up you've got soap built up in it.

You can. They tend to be large and expensive, though.

Even my 7kg top loader only needs a quarter to half a dose of detergent so I expect a front loader would use less.

I clean my washing machine monthly, the lint filter every couple of loads. My washing machine doesn't have a fabric softener dispenser but those are a great source of crap on your washing if you don't keep them clean.

I've no hot water outlet to connect to the machine. I'll try run with no soap, though I understand clothes also hold on to soap for a few washes, so it might still foam up.

I still think the machine might be a piece of poo poo that uses too little water.

A couple of cups of white vinegar or carb soda on the hottest cycle. Or Woolies and Coles sell washing machine cleaner.

When the guy from Weber bbqs said hed give me a new gas tap gratis after I broke it, I told him id tell everyone what a great bloke he was and that baby Qs were brilliant.

So buy a weber baby q, they are loving great to cook on and really easy to haul around for picnics. They really do a great job and apart from breaking the somewhat delicate gas tap, has not missed a beat or rusted out in 8 years. Also, Weber stood by their product and priority posted the part to me. He really was a nice guy and said Weber was a good mob to work for.

Also, napisan is really good at unfucking your whites.

Do you often sing or whistle just for fun?
We used to have one of those Samsung washing machines, the top loading sort that were prone to catching on fire if you used hot water to wash. It eventually died and we replaced it with a Bosch which I am very happy with. The only thing I don't like about it is that when it finishes, it beeps in a really angry pissed off way. The Samsung used to play a happy little song that reminded me of the pc speaker theme songs from the computer games I'd play as a kid.

Still, I guess cranky beep is better than having your house possibly burn down

Mine has a mute button.

Seriously, why do some washing machine and microwave manufacturers feel that they need to alert you that these non-time-critical processes are complete and not shut up about it until you open the door?
Fire alarms are meant to be annoying so that you pay attention and don't die. Is it so critical that I get to my microwaved food within 15 seconds? Apparently a lot of them have a secret mute button by holding stop or something.

Are you sure it doesn't have an inbuilt water heater?
It sounds like you're putting too many clothes in a load if you feel like it doesn't use enough water. If it's full to the top and tightly packed, you've got way too much in there and stuff won't get clean as well as be streaky. The soap doesn't get agitated and dissolve and it'll stick to the clothes. Start by doing loads that only go halfway up the drum when loosely packed- anything over 3/4 even loosely is probably overfilled.
