S class has slightly better stats. It doesn’t really matter though, and you can have 3 different tools, so upgrade the one you have until you get an S class.

Yes but no.

You're getting C-class upgrades because you have the base blueprint it would normally award you with, and I think you have to repeat that about a dozen times because that's how many base parts were originally gated behind the quest - once you've worked your way through all the base parts you're supposed to be unlocking it'll transition so that you still have an infinitely repeatable Base Computer Archives quest but all it requires you to do is go to the computer to receive a Salvaged Technology Module.

i had one where some invisible piece of floor was creating a ramp in a corridor and i couldn't walk through the far door because i was too high in the air. shooting the invisible thing made me fall through it to the real floor and allowed me to progress, but i assume that doesn't work with floating debris, does it?

Wait until the last parts. It sends you to a fixed planet, so it sends everyone to the same place. So obviously it's a loving mess of lovely bases and HUD markers all over the drat place and you can't discern your actual mission marker at all.

The worst parts of this game are always when it sends players to the same spot because there's always a team of idiots ready to build something lovely and gently caress everything up for everyone else.

Ok, so probably because I bought a base blueprint at the Anomaly or something I'm just getting sent to the same place for some upgrades? I read after 10 or so it goes to salvaged tech modules but I'm pretty sure I've done this more than that. I got an S upgrade yesterday so maybe it's almost done with its loop.

I like this game a lot, but the derelict freighter I got has an invisible barrier of some sort blocking the door I need to continue in and finish, so I can’t do the stupid mission. If I restart my save, I get the same freighter with the same problem.

I guess I could just go and get back on my ship and leave, but it’s probably easier just to stop playing, since the only thing I really “need” are those upgrades from the derelict missions.

I’ve seen other people with this same bug, and I think it sucks!

Whoa! You're gonna be a legend!
Desolation was enough to get me back into the game for a bit; not enough to keep me around but it's a hopeful sign.

For me the issue with NMS has always been that it has a strong start and compelling mid-game, but you reach a point where you have the ship you want, the freighter you want, you're loaded up with S-Class upgrades, inventory space, and completed all the tech trees and... what's next? Nothing, nothing's next.

The biggest program I've had with NMS has always been that there's zero endgame. All the systems in the game push you to improving yourself and your equipment, but when you run out of improvements there's nothing left to do. Nothing left but exploring new systems, I guess, but there's a reason this game was rightfully criticized on launch for having nothing but it's procedural generation in place. The post-Atlas Rises paradigm of having the infinite universe be the foundation of having Actual Stuff To Do instead of just being The Stuff by itself made for a much better game.

Now at least you have derelicts to explore, which are good for a couple reasons. They're a resource sink, which gives you a reason to find ways to get more units when you have everything else. Now that activated indium mine giving you millions of units every few minutes isn't a pointless exercise! They're also a Thing To Do when you've got a multitool and exosuit full of S-class upgrades and nothing to use them on, and the freighter tech is both new and a unique improvement.

It's not perfect - I've run into the same issue with floating objects blocking hallways that other people have posted about. It's annoying that you won't know what tech you'll pull out until you get there. It's a bit too easy. But it's a Thing, and it's way longer and complex then most stand-alone content they've added to the game.

I'd love to see a harder version of derelict exploration available where pushing all the way through to the final room is a legitimate challenge - something you might actually want to do regularly in multiplayer just for some extra guns. I don't think I'll ever see it - the gameplay just doesn't lend itself to difficulty very well. But hopefully they'll take the response to freighters and use it as an excuse to add content with a bit of actual depth to it in later updates. Exploring facilities on planets, maybe? How about massive alien structures? Something halfway challenging that takes 10-30 minutes to complete with a tangible reward at the end would do wonders for the game long term.

I remembered that I played for a few hours back when (I may be misremembering) the trick to getting upgrades was joining random peoples' games repeatedly to check their station vendors for S-rank stuff. My omnitool has all the S-rank scanner upgrades and I have one of the S-rank backpack upgrades. Unfortunately that means I don't have the blueprint and this makes upgrading my tool a very bad idea.

I'd love More Things(c) because more stuff is good, but wouldn't this just run into the same problem? You do a bunch of facilities/structures/whatever to get the new rewards they added and now you're back to not having any reason to do them. The game is never going to end and roll credits so it'll always end with you quitting and waiting for new content.

It would run into that problem, but that's okay. It's fine for a game to run out of stuff to do, and NMS isn't really a game-as-service kind of deal to begin with. There was never gonna be a roll-credits moment for this game and we knew that from the moment someone reached the centre of the galaxy for the first time, so the big question for me is if things they add to the game are going to notably expand the gameplay loop.

I guess a better way to describe my position is I like the presentation of derelict freighters as a model for new content compared to some of the other "big" things they've added, like the minotaur, or the nautilon, or even the living ships. Derelicts add more complex procedural content and their own unique reward structure, and they kind of slot "on top" of what already exists - you want to already be pretty rich, you want a good gun, you're doing it to expand and improve a good freighter. The game could use a lot more content like this instead of things that expand the game laterally but don't add depth.

I have a living starship now, it’s very pretty.
The person upthread who complained about the planet you have to visit was completely right about how much of a pain it is. So many base markers and save beacons everywhere, plus the first grave didn’t even show up as a marker on my hud. Luckily I was able to find it regardless but geez that planet is a cluttered shitshow!
At least I was able to ‘visit’ one of the bases to get the reunion achievement easily.

I'm pretty sure the upgraded drives just give access to the rarer elements. You just gotta hop around a lot to get all the S-class upgrades you want. It's cool though, it's not like there's a lack of star systems.

On the 'no endgame' chat, NMS falls apart to me once there's no reason to land on any planets. It's fun up to that point and I deffo got my money's worth out of it, but it's still kinda disappointing that unless you're really into base building I just kinda peters out.

Definitely - other than base-building, the core of the game is to land on planets and see the sights. The high-point for me is when you land on a new planet, start feeding dinosaurs, and an extra-cute/giant creature surprises you when it comes to join the fun.

Mechanically, at least, I agree with you. I can see the end and why it's got the mile-wide-inch-deep thing going, but I dumped 40 hours in at launch because I picked it up based on chill pre-release streams instead of what I later found out was massive hype. The slow mining and building and manually processing everything is what keeps me enjoying it. Building the solar+battery array at my base was satisfying as hell. This is my Eurotruck-style relaxation game until Shipbreakers gets patched into something a bit more enjoyable. In the current incarnation it reminds me a lot of why I hate Minecraft but dumped a disturbing number of hours into Terraria.

Except for right now, when I'm angry because I can't find a dude to man my weapons terminal.

If you can get the cylindrical/small room series up and running, they have snap points for a whole lot of things, including powered items like the refiners that don't have power attach points for purely wood/metal/concrete bases.

it's just annoying that you have to farm in a way that feels like an exploit to get even anywhere close to the amount of required nanites

like it's 500 nanites for an S-Class mod and you need maybe 16 each of those for your ship, exosuit and multitool but then you need 50k to go from an A-Class ship to an S-Class?

every other resource in the game has a way of minimising the grind but for nanites, nope, go sit in a space station for three hours in order to farm up an order of magnitude more than you'd need for any other purpose

I saw a video where a guy would pick up a 17m S class ship and upgrade the cargo slots to fill it out, which got it to 77 million and then scrapped it for 50m and parts. That seems like a ridiculous profit to me but it took him an hour to get that far.

I’m still pretty poor, I finally got an S class experimental multi tool with 24 slots I’m going to use for general stuff and an alien rifle A class with 24 slots I’m going to use for combat exclusively. I wasn’t able to find coordinates for an S class alien anywhere so I settled.

I have about 5m to my name now and a bunch of industrial blueprints. What’s the best way for me to make money? I was planning to make a base that produces trade goods for lots and lots of money since I want to build a big base anyway, but is there a quicker way to get some seed money?
