Doom 3 picks up quite a bit in the back half (not gonna become amazing or anything mind you), but if impatient fire up the DLC which is more actiony faster.

Doom 4 is worth playing and is basically nothing like Doom 3

I found Doom 3 very underwhelming a few years ago. The guns are wimpy, particularly the shotgun, and even in the original non-BFG edition you were given plenty of ammo for the assault rifle which is your workhorse for most of the game which feels anti-Doom. Eventually you'll reach a point where you can predict the encounter design where any time enemies spawn in front of you it's guaranteed one appeared a few hallways back and will ambush from behind when you feel safe which just sucks.

Very briefly they tease you with Hell which has infinite sprint and better paced encounters but nah man, FEAR came out less than a year later and is the better spooky shooter and Dead Space is what Doom 3 wanted to be.

Edit: I have more to say....

Ok, so I'm playing Doom 3 for literally the first time (and on Switch) and while I definitely get how it's supposed to be a slow-paced horror game with guns, it's... not very fun? The gunplay feels fairly bad, though I just got the automatic rifle, the enemies seem uninteresting and sort of bullet-spongey.... I don't know. I'm still in Mars City (basically 30 minutes after poo poo goes down, and I'm making my way back to where I arrived), so perhaps it picks up?

If I end up hating it, that's fine, game cost me like $3 months ago, so it's no big loss. Still, it'd be nice if it was more engaging.

I'm glad I backed HL2 in 2004 instead of this. And yes, I remember the huge deal about "flashlight or gun?" and can't believe anyone ever thought that was good design :psyduck:

Someday, I'll play Doom 2016.

Someday.

Your workhorse, the shotgun, has the worst pellet spread in the history of ever and on top of that it does not feel good to use

Can’t handle all the Doom 3 hate. It’s definitely got issues, but it’s still a super immersive corridor crawler if nothing else, and I only played it to completion last year. I still prefer all the other Dooms to it, but it’s still good in its own right.

I posted this a while back, but it’s still worth sharing - Doom 3 was aesthetically gorgeous.

With the sound pack from the leaked alpha, a lot of common enemies and weapons sound much punchier and more menacing. Those meaty sounds don’t fix the fundamental monotony of a lot of monster encounters or the weapon issues, but it does make a surprisingly big difference in suspension of disbelief.

Still eats my brain that when id was brainstorming the BFG Edition, someone actually concluded the original game didn’t have enough ammunition. What the gently caress, guys?

So much of vanilla Doom 3 feels like they gave it one final blind public test and everybody freaked out because some nerd said it wasn't metal enough. Like the complaint the game was too dark, all the lights were there they were just set to like 1/10th of the brightness they should've been so the ship you arrive in the intro is entirely in black shadow.

Plan Z
May 6, 2012

One really specific compliment I can pay for Doom 3 is that the guns all click and clack in really satisfying ways. Their firing noises are largely unimpressive, but I really love the sounds of the reloads. Very few games these days have guns that make more than piddly 'chik' noises when you operate them.

This gels with how BFG Edition seems to have been brightened by someone doing the exact opposite, leading to some areas looking different and worse (in addition to having a built-in duct tape mod so more ambient light was arguably not even needed)

Probably not. Fresh Supply was piggy-backing off of Atari's rights to distribute the original PC version digitally, Night Dive would probably have to deal with Warner Bros to do a Switch port and while they've made big strides with Bethesda and Doom 64, they still seem to have a bit of trouble getting the megapublishers to notice them. Hopefully I'm wrong and a huge idiot!

The slimes are hardcoded into the game because Duke3D is kind of a mess under the hood, they're sadly not in the CON script and can't be easily replaced. Here's a little mod for eDuke32 that deletes them from the world the moment they spawn and attempts to remove any means they have of spawning, which is the next best thing.

Episode 3 feels like a more natural Episode 2 than Episode 2 does but honestly its just that Episode 2 sticks out and doesn't mesh with the other episodes at all. Episodes 4 and 5 and 2/3rds of the expansions all are very terrestrial urban environs

Doom III, I keep meaning to pick up the BFG edition on sale but never did yet; it's had a couple of VR mods that apparently work very well due to the game's inherent slower pace / non-twitch gameplay and low monster count.

Doesn't work with the regular copy of III which I already have

I have to wonder what you're basing this on, since MS/Xbox seems more interested in releasing new things rather than re-releasing old things. Sure, Master Chief Collection got a PC port, but it took an entire console generation of patching and kajoling to make it happen, and Age of Empires was openly testing the waters for a new game (and, since it went so well, an entire new studio)

I remember thinking Doom 3 was “ok” when it came out. I initially dug the tone and the lighting effects but I distinctly remember wanting to be done with the game by the end.

Then Half Life 2 came out and completely blew it away and I’ve been hesitant doing a re-play after all these years because it was a merely “OK” FPS in 2004 and I doubt it has aged particularly well.
