AndrewP posted:Football is so insanely complicated. It's why I love it so much. Football x's and o's far surpasses any other sport that I've studied. The neatest thing about it is that every technique and system comes down to one basic fact: have more guys in an area of the field than your opponent. How teams go about doing that, like for example that Doug Pederson call to stack bunch to the right then flood the middle, is the awesome part. It's why I hate all the idiotic assumptions that people make about players. They'll point out stats til they're red in the face but never talk about why a play actually happened the way it did.

It's always QBs and aside from Romo I tend to zone out because it feels like they're all playing catch up. Get me a recently retired DB in the booth to explain wtf is going on.

I think the hard part is it takes close to 2-3 minutes to explain a play and there is maybe 40 seconds between plays. What ESPN should do is have a half time segment breaking down plays from Sunday on MNF with recent players. All the xs and os. Give me a DB and a QB goin over stuff. I would watch the hell out of that.

The recent breakdown of All-22 film by various former players online has really been instructive for me. There was a play where it seemed from the broadcast that Carson Wentz threw behind a receiver for a key first down, but Dan Orlovsky showed the receiver inexplicably moved from his spot after putting his hands up for the ball and Carson committed to the throw. A play like that might not make a national show, but could be a weekly segment on a team's YouTube channel.

I don't think it's a time constraint so much as it is the average person watching football doesn't want a big in-depth technical explanation of stuff. They want to maybe highlight some key stuff about how this guy threw a good block, but not that the 3-technique getting reached blocked was disastrous to the run fit or anything like that. John Madden/Tony Romo are sometimes kinda there, but I think crucially they're wrapping it up with enthusiasm or predictions or stuff like that. Real in-depth technical stuff for non-coaches has like exploded in the past decade, but it's not even the kinda thing where even most teams have hired a guy like Fran Duffy or what have you who does kind of more niche online/web based technical stuff.
