kitchens/living spaces in a lot of east and se asia are smaller than your average one in europe or north america. you might only have 1 burner (if that) and having a rice cooker lets you use that to make somehting else and not have to leave your loving rice on for 20-30 minutes before or after you're cooking whatever else you're gonna eat.

D-Pad posted:

Came here to say this. Instant Pots are loving amazing. Get one for rice plus everything else it does. Then get the air fryer lid for it. It makes so many dishes so fast and easier than the traditional way. Gyoza with the instant pot air fryer lid is perfect every time.

also you can get any 'ol pressure cooker made in the last 5 years. instantpot has done a good job branding itself but thats all it is. you can often find as good if not better ones for cheaper if you just get another brand.

An extra tip. Most cookers the measurement "Line" starts at 2 cups but it will happily cook one. Just eyeball(needle optional) how much water you need. You have to add an obviously large amount of extra water to gently caress it up.

Honestly I just eyeball it every time and it makes for some variety in rice since my partner and I eat it almost daily.

Today it's a bit softer!

Tomorrow, it's approaching al dente.

Who gives a gently caress.

People 'round these parts aren't sitting around discussing the intricacies of perfect rice cooking, it's just a loving carb that makes you feel full and tastes nice with the other poo poo you cooked.

idk ive never had a good air fried thing in my life from dedicated air fryers but some people like it so more power to them.

i really don't know what a instantpot does that my new midea pressure cooker doesn't do, tho. seems to have all the same settings (i just follow instantpot recipes lol) and it was like 20% cheaper for the same size.

I was reading an article about cities beginning to hit 50C and it got me wondering how climate change is viewed by Chinese netizens. Like, we have doomers and earnest discourse in English media, but many of us are lucky to live in places that aren't facing such immediate dangers. We also don't have as much of the industry causing the damage near us anymore. What are people's perspectives like in that situation?

Pretty much what China is trying to do to Australia for being first to push back simply for advocating for an investigation. China has been throw all sorts of threats since. Australia is close to "gently caress it" anti-China with announcements of new weapon purchases to counter China. I am surprised China has retaliated to the rest of 5 eyes especially UK to such extent ('F' Canadians). Suspect they might not be able to afford to attack everyone. China's idea of diplomacy is dumb af so has a limit been reached?

I hate all social media except for the forums format, and I also don’t have a very high tolerance for Chinese media in general, so I’m not the best source on this. However, based on Chinese social media I’ve been exposed to, I can offer a few observations.

-People tend to self-censor pretty carefully, so there’s very little “earnest discourse” in terms of criticizing leadership directly. To an extent, I’m willing to recognize that this is just me demanding (justly or unjustly) different cultural signifiers for what is “earnest discourse” than are usually found in Chinese language media.

-I’ve seen a good number of videos or articles describing American wastefulness and lack of commitment on the part of the average American to combating climate change. The criticisms are true, but also extremely one-sided.

-Surprisingly, I’ve also seen a number of pieces praising Japan and Japanese society on the same points.

-I’ve never seen or heard outright climate change denial like what exists in the US. However, the Chinese internet is heavily dominated (in my experience) by rightwing discourse that is growingly similar to global rightwing populism. I’ve recently heard it expressed that climate change is exaggerated by “white leftists” (basically, SJWs) and anyway the Chinese government is working hard on the problem and is bound to get it all sorted out.

I always thought that rice was the most boring and unnecessary staple - sticky, dry, little taste. That's especially true for rice-cooker rice. That stuff is just filler, having to be rescued by your other meal components. No one would eat this as a dish. It isn't. It's nothing.

Turns out that's really only the case because most people don't know how to cook rice correctly, including my former self.

The single correct way to prepare rice is called Pilaf, and it transforms this meager ingredient into a dish of the gods. It's like risotto, but much better. The optimal point for preparation of rice has been found, and it is unique. There is literally no reason to waste good rice on anything else, except maybe sushi.

I pity the fool who prepares rice in any other way, because they are wrong, their culture is wrong, and their line should be extinguished.

Let me in particular highlight the necessity of cooking rice in both fat and water and not just water.
It's like a magic trick. Water - lovely boring concoction of regret.
Fat (butter, ghee, from meat, broth, oil) +Water: Literal gourmet masterpiece that cures cancer.
You are WELCOME.

Edit: apparently it's actually Pilav not Pilaf. That's okay, call it what you like. Just don't prepare rice in any other way.
