Both machete movies are really lame. Try hard schlock isn’t good.

It was better as a trailer.

But the intestine rope scene was excellent

Hardcore Henry is a lot of fun, and since all the mooks up to the end fight are Russian cops, it's aged extremely well

Yeah, this has been it for me. I think Sin City encouraged a bunch of bad tendencies and now all of his stuff has that cheap digital feel to them.

To be fair, I haven’t seen Alita yet and I heard that was pretty good, but his 2000s output walked over that DIY line into just looking terrible.

Alita was loving incredible, but I honestly kind of suspect Cameron pretty much ghost-directed it. It doesn't feel like Rodriguez beyond a few aesthetic touches.

I feel like if I'd been more familiar with the source material I might have liked it better but I thought it felt like several entries in a young adult series stitched together into one bafflingly structured film. It did look great though.

I know the source material pretty well, and the movie's basically adapting the first story arc (Alita becoming a bounty hunter, fighting Makaku/Grewcica, the Vector and Hugo stuff) with bits of the second and third arcs (Motorball and Nova, respectively) being shuffled forwards to set those arcs up better.

It's kind of a weird, scattershot and meandering story to begin with, and in the manga a lot of world and plot elements get introduced as-needed rather than being foreshadowed at all; if anything, the movie did a weirdly good job at fitting it into a coherent movie structure.

A bunch of Robert Rodriguez joints have the digital blood and the like because it's way cheaper to film - most of his recent work has been on shoestring budgets (Machete was $10m and Machete kills $20m)

This was me watching Akira as a kid. I then learned it was a comic series spanning 8 years and it made sense as to why it seemed confusing in places. The obscure original nonsense English dub not helping matters...

I love the film but it's definitely not perfect.

Jump on Netflix right now and check out Shadow - don't feel afraid to skip, like, the first 45 minutes of the movie, because it's a total drag and I completely checked out for most of it. Then the actual movie starts and goddamn. I mean goddamn. UMBRELLA WARFARE. Really exciting, stylish, and inventive. I've had a ton of fun watching it, even if the first half of it is a complete drag.

These are pretty much the opinions you will find on the movie, I think. I'm in the latter camp, I thought it had a lot of heart and great action, but if CGI action turns you off it's a hard pass. Like, a really hard one. It will keep you from connecting with the main character and any of the action.

And Rodriguez figured this out in 1994! Dude built the guacamole gun to basically do squibs without using explosives. There’s so much good creative filmmaking on the cheap in his movies up until Sin City and then easy CGI halted that.

Highly medium film. First half drags because they establish Diesel as both omnipotent and omniscient. Then there's a plot twist that makes it much more interesting, though the movie is still mostly without real tension. Action sequences are generally good, though the big fight at the end was corny and poorly directed. One plus is that Vin Diesel does quite a few wrestling moves.

Double-digit runtime is the rule for action movies, so Bloodshot could have stood to have at least 10 minutes chopped out. PG-13 rating didn't hurt the violence too bad, it was mostly the standard "same amount of people can get shot as long as no gore comes out of their wounds."

This is a pretty crazy take, since GIFs don't entail sound design, editing, music, or the greater context of the characters, performances, tone, and literally anything else about a movie. Stop being a weirdo and watch The Thing.

It's just that it happens over and over and over again.

like take the Man Behind Winkies in Mulholland Drive - the glimpse you get of it in the movie is so short you don't even get a full idea of what that thing looks like, just that sort of impressionistic horror - put it in a GIF and right away I can see what the makeup looks like and how it moves and everything else. Stop posting horror GIFs people jfc
