So after probably the best part of a decade and a half dabbling in animation on and off I finally finished something: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5CkutRK9x0 Nothing compared to what some of you guys toss up, but I'm happy to have made something more than less than one second long without abandoning it. I used Rough Animator, which I don't think I've seen anyone mention in here but I've found pretty great for this kind of sketchy, FBF stuff. One of the main reasons I basically stopped doing any animation for a while when trying some of the alternatives to Flash was just how heavyweight and cumbersome most software tends to be for hobby stuff. You're obviously not going to be making professional grade films out of RA, but for messing around directly on a tablet it's the best one I've found, and has a surprising amount of features for 5bux. There was also an alpha test build of the new Animation Paper sent out recently, have been meaning to give that a try too.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but here goes. I'm a macro photographer, a lot of my images are detailed and high res (~3kx3k), however most views of them are on small/lower res screens and mobile devices. I'd like to make them into short animations which consist of a zoom in and then a moderate but very smooth pan to show off the details better. What software/formats/panning techniques should I be looking into?

Import the photo as a plane (enable Images as Planes in the add-ons menu) 2. Key frame the camera moves 3. Render animation from the camera

Thanks, this gave me some more closely related search terms and I was able to figure out that Photoshop could do this using the timeline option I'm messing with it now looks promising!

Blackmagic DaVinci resolve is free and will do that. https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/ It can be a bit opaque if you’ve never used video editing software before so here’s a good source of tutorials https://www.youtube.com/user/CaseyFaris777

Since you have access to photoshop you can use Premiere and After Effects if you have the full Creative Cloud. That would be pretty easy to do with AE.

I only have the Photography package (LR and PS) I pretty much got it working in Photoshop after learning a bit about frame timings and smoothness. The effect isn't quite what I imagined though there maybe a better way to go about it in terms of the animation. jarlywarly fucked around with this message at 11:07 on Aug 5, 2020 |

Heres a weird blue guy jumping over a weird orange thing. Going to see if I can use this animation style of 24fps camera / 4-12fps character movement to draw over with the grease pencil with art just abstract enough that it hides the fact that I cannot draw at all. Just grabbed a mixamo animation and exaggerated some of the poses. https://i.imgur.com/E7qu0Xo.mp4

Nice. Did you do all of the animation? I'm digging the mixed media feel of it. I assume you've been practicing in Blender a lot. That's all good stuff. Since the thread isn't dead for a moment I have a small update. The company that I wrote a few animated webisode scripts for did a 500+ kid focus test, and our episodes beat every known IP except Simon the rabbit. Take that Angry Birds! They were so happy with the results that I've been commissioned to write a few dozen more.

I've been doing animation on and off for years, but with the pandemic going on, I decided to do it full-time. And honestly, I've been having fun. You can see a bunch on my YouTube channel, but here's one I'm particularly proud of, a crossover between my two webcomics. I co-animated this with a friend. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6iNkAUM77M

Adding the screaming kid running through one of the caption interstices would pull it together. Subscribed and looking forward to more stuff! Thank you for sharing.

Thanks a lot for the feedback! I'm working on more things of this nature now, including more hand-drawn oriented stuff. I appreciate your observations there, as this was as much a technical exercise as a finished work.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UEkwliTaXw A little piece of animation I did, released last month. I'm in the middle of making a full-length cartoon featuring this character (she was also in "Cat and Kat", which I shared few posts up). One of her shtick is that she can take off her tail and change its shape (an idea influenced by the really old Felix the Cat cartoons), hence why I did this short as a test of sorts.

https://twitter.com/bakertoons/status/1381833992090095617 In my illustrations I normally don't use that much layers (just sketch, ink, and color layer for individual characters), but since doing animation I find myself using a lot. Even then, I don't really draw each body part on separate layers unless I plan to animate them moving. From a cartoon I'm working on

This is my final submission for my program. It's pretty rough around the edges and there's so much I'd continue to work on, I really had to rush to put in an ending sadly, but I am exhausted from all my work and at this point I'm calling it. that said there's also a lot I'm proud of in here and I learned a lot about production process and pipelines, workflows and whatnot. Hope yall like it https://vimeo.com/541099565

If you're looking to work as an animator you'll probably need a reel of body mechanics and acting shots because studios don't really go for this whole "entire pipeline thesis film" thing anymore, but hopefully your program has prepared you guys for that with targeted assignments with feature rigs.

Thanks! Yeah I figured this whole project wouldnt exactly be my reel. I need to spend my summer doing more focused small scenes, I have some, but they are my first attempts at 3d animation and I really need to get a better handle on it. My critique of my program is its very generalist, Im not interested in game design and would have rather drilled deeper into animation than learn C# and Unity, but the school was the most affordable. Appreciate the feedback

Over 10 years ago a friend and I created a Lego stop motion animation of the bullet time scene from The Matrix, all with in-camera effects only. Took us forever to make, but it went a bit viral at the time with some celebrity shout-outs, a few showings in print media, and a clip in the A Lego Brickumentary film. It was weird - we got contacted by a few companies to look at animating stuff for them, interviewed by a few no-name podcast people, and even spoke with Pharrell Williams about making a music video for him. We have day jobs though so none of that seriously interested us. Professional animators we are NOT. Anyway, we just got a comment on it from one of the guys who worked on the original bullet time system that they created for the film, and that's really cool. It's funny what little things can make you feel good about a piece of work.
