I thought B2/W2 was a waste of time and an unnecessary sequel. B/W was the high point of the series imo.

HGSS is still my favorite though as a whole.

That’s the kind of thing that sounds nice and thematic, but completely ignores the reality that the water route in this series are universally worse than land routes due to the need for a designated Surf and Dive user, the omnipresent trainers, lack of healers, lack of type diversity, landmarks, and the constant wild Pokemon random encounters.

That's kind of Game Freak's modus operandi: They go for what's thematically appropriate even if its up being functionally bad. I mean look at balance and Pokemon movepools.

The only thing that makes a water route suck is being constantly bombarded by tentacool and wingull every couple of inches. Take that out and just have it be overworld encounters and you get a lovely scenic route. personally I love the layout of Hoenn and Sinnoh is fine save the snow, mud, and fog being complete rear end to slog through

Don’t get me started on that. The type chart has been a mess for 20+ years now and shows no signs of changing any time soon thanks to Gamefreak trying to be “thematic” above logical. See: Grass and Bug being resisted by and weak to half the chart or pebbles being the ultimate weapon.

May the sacred flame guide me... Or something like that.
Man it's kinda surprising seeing Hoenn so disliked, I always considered it to be a pretty good region overall.
Hell I'd say that it's the best Region in terms of game design and progression until the post-Lilycove water areas. I'll admit that that's one hell of a caveat though, since that's basically like 1/5th of the game.

I definitely think that the water routes could've been much more interesting though, there's some very minor differences between some of the water routes but it's all very minute and the big issue is that you just get an endless stream of tentacool and wingull. It's not like there wasn't ways they could've diversified it either; the areas around Mossdeep and Shoal Cave could have incorporated ice floes and whatever considering it's close to the only ice area in the region, the area around Pacifidlog is ostensibly above a Corsola colony despite Corsola not being available there at all.

It's insane that between Diving and Surfing you can literally only find 5 different mons, split 2/3, no matter where you are bar Spheal showing up around Shoal Cave. I'm pretty sure that there's like, at least triple that amount available through Fishing, why weren't some of those encounters just moved to the Diving/Surfing encounters to diversify those?

I hope so but I find it hard to believe since SwSh's issues aren't connected with a lack of knowledge of the system of choice. They are partly, but SwSh were much more heavily affected by terrible development times and a clear idea to get as much cash as possible out of the player (without making several more games as is Game Freak's usual way). The former can be mitigated by already knowing the system and having a base already, the latter is only likely to get worse.

Thinking about it after you phrased the question this way, it's my second favorite. That doesn't necessarily make it the 2nd best, but I really enjoyed X/Y. Out of the modern games X/Y is my favorite. Everything after B2/W2 was a step down but so was everything before. IIRC, Platinum was slower which hurt it. HG and SS were my 2nd favorite of the GBA/DS era. The post game in X/Y was decent enough and the online was better than previous gens. X/Y's online helped fill the void of less post game than B2/W2.

I'm nowhere near a competitive player so I can understand my opinions being much different than others in this thread.

Black and White had one of the best stories and some of the most compelling characters but a lot of areas were very lackluster. Don't get me started on Black city and what a drag that was if you didn't have a collection of steady internet buddies.

Possibly, seems we get the DLC instead of something like Ultra Sun/Moon. If there was a full game coming out this year they probably would’ve announced it already.

HGSS had probably the best aesthetics and area design in the series, but god did it need a level/mon availability/trainer roster rebalance. In another world it's an utterly flawless game.

Yeah that’s from the original games but it’s really dumb that they didn’t change it. I recommend playing with a team of 3 or 4, a full team of 6 will leave you severely underleveled.

See, there's a lot of good and bad with the old games but I'm just curious if any of you think this can be addressed by just re-releasing with updated graphics, level curve, encounter rates etc.
I'm not personally banking on it but it's an interesting thought. Also Hoenn despite it's flaws is still my favorite region to this very day. Although weirdly enough Galar/Alola are tied for having my favorite characters.

See, I found the opposite: N was a good anti-villain manchild even with his occasional dips into fanfiction-tropes because his delusions were acknowledged as being deliberately fostered by the real villain.

As for the all new monsters, I found that to be one of the best moves possible. We finally traveled to an entirely new area of the world. We had to adapt to a brand new land with all new Pokémon without any of our old reliable crutches. It made Unova seem much more fleshed out as a place. More to the point, it forces the player to get out of their comfort zone and actually grow in a new adventure.

Frankly, I would love to have seen it happen again, but I know that the Dexit crowd would march with torches and pitchforks if that were to happen.

Hey, you know what you could do in post game BW that you explicitly can't in SWSH? Transfer all previous mons into the game. I know people that were upset by the all new mons thing when BW came out, but would have preferred SWSH to be the same over what we got.

B/W would be way better if they didn't have just an absolutely hosed level curve for evolutions with all the new mons and if the game wasn't so goddamn stingy about handing you new stuff. Like a third of the dex is locked until after the eighth gym! Its insane! It somehow falls into the same trap G/S/C did with backloading new Pokemon despite an entirely new slate of them.

Also it had 156 pokemon compared to Red/Blue's 151 but it also had triple the number of legendaries which cut down its normal roster substantially. It also introduced the idea of events TMs and event regular pokemon which thankfully they walked back real loving quick.

The best games in the series are the ones with good Pokemon availability. Sun/Moon, Platinum, B2/W2, and X/Y. :colbert:

B2W2 also had no story, pretty much every new area was terrible, really bad pacing, and overall just felt like a bad step backwards in every way but the Pokedex. And sadly, the franchise never recovered from those steps backwards, beyond SM at least bringing story back only to drop it afterwards.

Pokken Tournament DX seems pretty good... I am having a fun time playing it for free right now. Is it worth buying? I’m wrecking single player but it seems pretty easy so far (I’m about to finish up C rank) but I played one battle online and it was pretty tough and ended up being a close match. Is there still a pretty good player base in this game? Is it worth getting the DLC, too?

low key, what I'm most disappointed about with not having all Pokemon in Sw/Sh is not being able to get the Galar Champion Ribbon for my older Pokemon. I'd always do an Elite 4 run with my team from previous games so I have some that have champion ribbons from og Ruby/Sapphire onward.

At one point I went back and played Pearl to try and get some mons to transfer into Black and I actually became quickly infuriated by how loving SLOW the battle times were. I kinda wish there was more of that with SWSH. In Johto I felt like a plucky youngster going up against people better or equal to me in strength, barely scraping by with strategy and luck. In Galar I feel like a loving supervillain. Nobody can stop me. It got to the point where I was deliberately avoiding wild Pokémon to keep my team underpowered but not only did it not work but it's like the direct opposite what Pokémon is about.
