my mom wants to go back to working in the school cafeteria and i told her to write her will because covid will take her pretty quick. i made sure to let her know if she has anything she needs to say to her kids before she went back to work to get it in the will because you cant talk on a ventilator. she hated it and i think it had some effect on her so if anyones trying to stop someone they know from casting themselves into the furnace you can try that.

It's Grover, if that helps.

How long will it take to capture Baghdad? 2 days
Will Saddam be killed? Yes
Total Iraqi civillian casualties: 500 dead
Total military casualties Iraq: 3000 dead
Total military casualties U.S.: 15 dead
Will the Iraqi army regulars hold the lines? No
Will the Republican Guard fight to the end? No
Will chem/bio weapons be used on invading troops?: Yes
Will Saddam launch attacks on the Kurds? Yes
Will Saddam launch attacks on Israel? No
-If yes; will Isreal retaliate harshly? Yes
Will Saddam sacrifice Baghdad (gas/nuke it)? No
Will the Kurds make a grab for independence? Yes
Will Iran do anything silly like try for land? Yes
Will Saddam burn the oil fields? Yes
How long will the US be occupying Iraq? ~15 years
Will the Iraq war catalyze increased terrorism in America? No
In the long run, will this war be good or bad for the world? Good

We have to look at what those civilian casualties are- just because they're civilian doesn't make them innocent! Lets take a look at a few possibilities:

1) A civilian walking down the street to market gets killed by a cruise missile fired at the market.

2) A civilian asleep in their house is killed when their house is targetting by a smart bomb and blown up.

OK, these two are regrettable innocents being killed- but since the US doesn't make a habit of targetting markets or houses, they're very small in number!

3) A civilian working at a chemical weapon factory gets killed when the chemical weapon plant is bombed.

4) A civilian security guard at a weapons depot is killed when the weapons explode.

5) A civilian contractor repairing a tank is killed by a MOAB dropped on the unit.

6) A civilian engineer is killed when the military command center he works at is destroyed.

7) A civilian delivering snackiecakes to the baghdad bunker vending machines eats a 5,000lb bunker buster.

etc, etc. The list goes on. My point is that there are a lot of civilians directly supporting the military that aren't exactly "innocent" and would be mire rightly counted among the military casualties than civilian. I'm a civilian and work for the US military, but I acknowledge I'm also a valid military target because of what I do. And I think the vast majority of civilian casualties in this campaign will not be innocent.

This feels like a staple of "post an image moments before disaster" threads 5-10 years down the road... I've had anxiety dreams about being in places half as crowded as this. I wish I didn't google this school district further, but... lol

Sorry if I missed this earlier in the thread. Some choice bits from the article:

As for masks, the schools “will encourage students, teachers, and bus drivers to wear masks… wearing a face mask is a personal choice….”

There is no requirement that they do so[wear masks], even after the principal of North Paulding High School sent a letter to parents telling them that members of the school’s football team had tested positive and that their children may have been exposed, as well.

Apparently the superintendent also praised the first day as being "remarkably normal" so congrats I guess?

CT's rates peaked back in April and are currently doing really well but their total per capita deaths so far are still the 4th worst in the entire country and are WAY higher than California, Texas or even Florida. Even if you're not going by per capita rates, CT still has the 10th highest number of total deaths out of all the US states & territories
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us

CT got hosed hard by coronavirus but are managing to keep it under control right now with all the safety guards they're maintaining, it would be insane for them to relax and drop their guard.

Haha, we're opening schools in a couple weeks.

People are really starting to just brazenly wander around with no masks here and it's disturbing. I saw an old couple freak out at the deli counter in the supermarket because they were asked to wear masks (and they were in full Trump regalia, which was clearly A Decision) and in the checkout line the guy behind me complimented my mask because he was also a fan of the same football team. He was also maskless so I spent the wait just talking about how Matt Stafford tested positive and the Lions would suck again if we even have a season because I'm a non-confrontational passive aggressive bitch.

In other news, the governor is looking at mandatory mask enforcement options because the people above exist in sufficient numbers to be concerning. We did what we had to to get the numbers down, but people clearly are now in the mindset that it is all over because we're not Florida or Texas. This is sort of like when you don't finish the whole course of antibiotics because you feel better after the first 10 days, only for the infection to come back stronger than ever.

I feel exactly the same way. So much of everything could be mostly preserved with a few minor adjustments (excluding some pretty broad categories, of course) but people won't even loving TRY. Wearing a mask really doesn't affect much of anything and neither does standing a little bit away from others and some people refuse even that much.

I'm a teacher and all of these school openings piss me off so much because we had the whole summer to actually come up with goals for online learning and to do some training or ANYTHING AT ALL and in 4 weeks time things will be locked down again (hopefully) but we'll still be pulling the distance learning program out of our asses at the last minute because we were trying so hard to believe that COVID would just disappear and leave us alone. Distance learning will suck, again, and people will again just blame distance learning in general rather than the completely seat-of-the-pants way it's been implemented.

The web of infections is going to be insane to track once schools start back up. My mom teaches second grade will be back in class soon. My dad runs a retail business where most of his job is talking to people and sitting in a fairly small office with like six of his employees. His guys deliver things into people's homes. Even if you buy the "kids aren't super spreaders" thing that the YMCA helpfully proved was bullshit at that camp, just the number of people who could potentially be infected from the average teacher is crazy.

just wanted to clarify that I don't think teachers are useless babysitters incapable of teaching anything useful/enlightening to kids but that the institution of schooling does very little to help teachers succeed in providing students 'real' education because it isn't really the point. unfortunately teachers do not run the schools or set curriculum requirements

  2. You can spread it by gently breathing on somebody.
  3. A mask reduces the chance of you giving it to someone else because it slows down your breath, thus cloth is fine.
  4. Make sure your mask is over mouth and nose because it comes out of both holes. If it's loose connect the ear straps with some rubber, paperclips, etc. behind your head.
  5. Wash your hands. Soap kills it.
  6. If you go into crowded areas, wear glasses because getting coughed at can infect you through your tear ducts.
  7. If you're indoors for longer durations: Stay alone. or Wear a mask. or Keep the windows open and air moving.
  8. The most endangered people are doctors, nurses and hospital staff, so protect them by not infecting other people. Assume you have it but have no symptoms.

And honestly, if you have to be about a lot and among people, and particularly near and in houses, get a 3M series 6000 full face mask. Costs a bit but the filters are cheap and they're comfy and safe compared to N95 masks.
Most people who got infected thought they were following the rules, because the rules the government sets are watered down to not scare people away from doing anything.

Thank you and the others. More feedback, especially about surfaces, is welcome.

If there's not a financial situation that necessitates sending your kid back (which in the USA is totally a possibility), if your me-time is more important than your kid's or someone else's kid's life and well-being you're a lovely parent and I've not no problem telling you as much.

People keep focusing on deaths as if that's the only "bad" number. Suppose the reproductive effects we're seeing in some adults causes sterility when experienced by children. The potential effect of an entire generation with a reduced ability to procreate is economically devastating, on top of the psychological impact. That's *one* possible non-death side effect that's being treated like a minor inconvenience to some adults with zero consideration or study on the impact to kids. It's absolutely loving batshit how cavalier public health officials are being about this to kowtow to the administration.
