So going beyond KT being a different game from 40k (and not an introduction to 40k, mechanically at least): is it a good game?

Sab669

I enjoyed it, I liked the slightly more "narrative" focus of naming my individual guys and how quickly you could slap a list together. I also liked that you could just play a game in more quickly, too. I think I recall people bitching about Charging and then your opponent Falling Back on their own move turn or something like that? I forget exactly but there was some big stink about being able to cheese things and gently caress over melee somehow. The Specialist system was also fun.

Some of the official objectives were really really dumb though. I remember one was just like "Attacker needs to kill the Defender's Leader" and there's nothing stopping you from just camping your leader in a corner behind a building for 4 turns. My store did a league and every single time anyone played that mission the Defender always won.

I'm realizing that my work, my ADHD and my lack of money pretty much means that I'm never going to have the time, patience, or cash to paint a full 40k army again but more fundamentally that I like skirmishers like Necromunda/KT or board games like Blackstone/Assassinorum/Lost Patrol more anyways.

"In the 40k world but not of it" or some poo poo, I dunno?

My view was KT was an OK way to kill some time and play with some warhammer models, but I'd pick 500pts 40K games over KT any day of the week.

Not a huge fan of the alternating turns, especially as the turn order is random. If Eldar were faster and got to act quicker or something then I could see more benefit in the system, but right now it is just roll off and see who moves and shoots first.

The biggest problems I have with the game are:

It's hard to get anything done thanks to all the negative modifiers to hit, which means that inevitably you take big guns because if you have 1 plasma gun it's probably going to miss, which means every KT needs to be stuffed full of special weapons rather than like a squad. Which is fine, they are elite commando squads with customised weapons or whatever, but as per the previous discussions it's hard to assemble a good team without spending loads of money or buying individual models off ebay.

The game becomes quickly a bit like rocket tag, where your kill team goes into the game as impactful and as killy as fast as possible, and if your opponent doesn't do the same, they don't have a fun game. It's always the case if you have a competitive 40K army vs a fun 40K army the battle will be one sided, but like a 5 man team of Grey Knights from one box will wipe the floor with a KT of guardsmen and scions from the standard boxes. So the Guardsman player ends up buying space marine plasma guns and makes a squad with like, 5 plasma guns, a hot shot volley gun, and a couple of dudes. Then you play against someone who's just bought some Necrons or whatever and the Guard player annihilates them.

Finally the GW written missions are a pile of poo poo.

I honestly only played it to get my friends into 40K (or see if they would be interested) and to get out of the house on weekends. When I had signed up to the 40K league I basically planned to only play KT when I was only with friends who only had KT rosters and no 40K army.

I think in the last 1-2 years GW have started releasing kits which included enough copies of all the special/alternative weapons to fully outfit your squad however you want (judging by the Plague Marines, Sisters, and new Necron Warriors any way)

I played original Neceomunda like 20 years ago. My Goliath gang wasn't very good. The stupid Orlocks won every game. And then the cult came with flamers and where unbeatable. I still hate orlocks when I think about it . They all look like Coreys from the 80s. Hollywood bad guys with watery hair , switchblades and bandanas :) Mine looked like the psycho dudes from Mad Max.
Necromunda was a better developed game than 40k at that time.

Alfrything is only the ghost of a memory...
Between injury rolls and to hit modifiers it feels impossible to kill things in kill team. I think as an introduction to 40k combat patrol is,a much better experience but kill team doesn't have enough individual flavour and love of its own to really justify its own standalone existence.

Huh, I'm a huge Thousand Sons fan and I never thought about it. I assume maybe the report never reached him between the ruinstorm loving things up and the space puppies being harried by the Alpha Legion to delay them.

I guess in the end no one cared since the Thousand Sons showed up on the side of the traitors at Terra.

Real edit: I wonder if Russ ever knew he was manipulated into killing the Sons by Horus? If he was, did he ever feel guilt over how easily he was deceived into attacking Prospero? I think there could be a good story there.

If I remember rightly the other Primarchs don't want him to go, but Russ sort of needs to see Horus has truly turned traitor for himself. The Emperor sort of either half heartedly asks him to stay or doesn't really act too bothered, and gives Russ his spear.

Russ fights Horus after basically chatting to him, and they fight. Russ stabs him with the Emperor's spear and is nearly killed, and the Space Wolves basically sacrifice tons of themselves to rescue him and bring him back to the ship.

I've not read it either but there's a cool guy on youtube who sort of reads select parts of the novels and sort of discusses them and what it shows. Pretty sure he says this is hinted as to why the Emperor was able to defeat Horus, because Russ had stabbed him with the Emperor's spear, opening a chink in his armour.

Then again though the Horus Heresy novels hint that the Emperor and Malcador knew that the horus heresy was going to occur anyway, either through foresight or as a planned method of obsolescence for the space marines. So you can sort of interpret it as the Emperor didn't give a poo poo, or he knew horus needed to be stabbed by Russ for him to defeat him.
