I'm really sorry, your avatar is giving me a boner and while that is perfectly OK and I don't want to kink shame anyone, its making me feel really weird getting a boner in a Trump thread.

Sincerely,

I had a powerful experience with one in year 10/11 with a good teacher and it just clicked

I have kinda wanted one since and was reminded of them recently

There are a couple blind spots on my mental math that having a physical manifestation may help me.

A couple specific times tables( weirdly along the 8 times tables) , and converting units up and down (going mm to cm to m to km) are a bit weak.

Like I can do them, but they aren't snappy and I'm not as confident as I would like and moving things around and seeing it function seems like a fun way to practice my math as an adult

When I took home brewing more seriously I could mentally do conversions in volume and weight in my head, which I can do now with cooking stuff (i.e. volume of a cup, teaspoon etc). Came in handy a lot being able to quickly scale a recipe from pounds and ounces into kilos and grams of grains and hops respectively if I saw a recipe I wanted to try :)

mm to cm to m is easy, 10mm to the cm and 100 cm to the m, then 1000 m to the km. It factors by 10 as you step up in units to the next unit!

When your brain decided to be a stubborn bitch and refuse to learn something you really can't change its mind on it.

I use weird a lot, but gun to my head I'd probably spell it wrong. It's wierd like that.

Yeah, it was OK. I was going to take a look at the images but the DVD drive on my old laptop decided not to work.

Thought I'd sleep well once it was over, but apparently not.

That I understand this stuff like, almost too intuitively is kinda my problem

Like I know to expect the unit to be larger or smaller and every time having to work backwards from that rather than knowing. It's definitely linked with division, like occasionally to decimalise a fraction I will do both sums and pick the one that makes the most sense within the context of the problem rather than being confident in my process. It's never been a problem, but I would prefer just to be confident rather than rely on mental bandaid strategies

It's a heuristic I probably developed in primary school that was effective enough. But it is frustrating , kind of how you might use a mnemonic device from early primary school for spelling a word as an adult.

I'm from a STEM background so metric conversions are second nature at this point but I always found it easiest to think of the prefix and associate it with the number: deci- is 1/10, centi is 1/100, milli- is 1/1000, micro- is 1/1000000 etc. From there you can basically scale up and down any metric measurement from metres to siemens. Converting into imperial is a nightmare and not worth learning because those units shouldn't exist.

I'm sure if I was using them everyday this wouldn't be an issue for me. Like I know this isn't a problem in understanding the concept, more in internal application of like, direction (?). Just a niche black hole I've been aware of in myself whenever I encounter this stuff in the wild and my defences aren't up ,so I've gotten used to sanity checking my math and i wanna fix it up
