What was holding up the movie industry before the plague, anyway? It was families with kids and teenagers watching superhero movies, correct? So Mulan hits right at one of the two supports.

I presume this is because for a lot of them it was the first movie they might have seen where it’s just a bad rear end woman doing bad rear end things and isn’t jonesing for some dude’s dick. Its also pretty well regarded in the LGBTQ community since it was the first Disney movie in a long time where the villain wasn't gay coded and on top of that the hero is gay coded. There was a small controversy earlier in the year when people found out Disney removed the ambiguity of the prince falling for Mulan when he still believes she's a man to appease China.

They probably need almost half a billion to make Mulan profitable. The budget was $200m+ with at least another 100 in marketing and the delays have only cost them more. I have no idea how many people are going to buy this on demand but even with the most generous estimates it seems like it might be an inevitable disappointment compared to a release in a normal world.

I don't know if I would interpret Disney's move as anything except skepticism about the capacity of theater operators to sell tickets in 2020 (and possibly beyond). If no theatrical release will be successful, might as well try to make up some of the difference in cost through Disney Plus.

Modern audiences are spoiled with having big rear end TVs in their living room and millions of movies on hand. Sure it may cost more than $30 to see a movie in a theater, but if you're just entertaining a handful of kids, just put on one of the millions of other Disney movies on, kids don't care if they just watched it last week.

Wasn't there something about Mulan not being allowed to show in theaters in China? Something about the length being like 20 minutes too long for the current virus prevention guidelines. I wonder of that played j n to the decision.

The other live action remakes were bad and made bank so even though Mulan the original wasn't as successful as those other originals I don't see that being a detriment. Unless I'm a dummy and those other remakes made all that money off people my age going to see them.

Unless I'm a dummy and those other remakes made all that money off people my age going to see them. Depends on your age I guess. I'm 39, and I actually worked in a theater when the original played, I still have that button that we were forced to wear on our uniforms somewhere in a closet. None of these live actions have appealed to me, maybe if I had children and was trying to find something new to watch in COVID lockup. The thing that just doesn't make sense to me is making it $30. $30 is a lot of money, I know they're factoring it on actually going to a physical cinema, but things are bad out there, and I can't see that being prioritized above toilet paper right now. If they just made it $5, most people wouldn't bat an eye to just rent it and keep the kids shut up for 1.5 hours.

Yeah, paying $30 for a family night out, where there are maybe 2-3 movies showing that appeal to everybody, is quite different from paying $30 to watch it on your own TV, when you could watch literally hundreds of other movies instead at no cost (assuming you already have a subscription).

Groovelord Neato posted:"It's bad it's not being released in theatres" says man whose super-expensive last film was funded by a streaming service. Which, to be fair, he was pretty openly uncomfortable with the fact that only a streaming service was willing to fund The Irishman, and lobbied pretty hard for Netflix to put it in theaters on at least a limited basis. He'd rather compromise than not make movies, but that doesn't mean he's happy about the compromises.

https://deadline.com/2020/08/john-wick-5-confirmed-by-lionsgate-sequel-will-be-shot-back-to-back-with-fourth-installment-1203006611/ "Keanu Reeves is back in the back-to-back sequels game with John Wick 4 and 5 aiming to film consecutively next year. On today’s Lionsgate earnings call, the studio’s CEO John Feltheimer said, “We’re also busy preparing scripts for the next two installments of our John Wick action franchise, with John Wick 4 slated to hit theatres Memorial Day weekend 2022. We hope to shoot both John Wick 4 & 5 back to back when Keanu becomes available early next year.” The sequel, John Wick 4, is currently scheduled for May 27, Memorial Day weekend." Kinda sucks the "Will he die / won't he die" suspense from the next movie, but I'm game.

I love the series...but I kinda think 4 and 5 could have just come down to 4. But I'll enjoy both. Also when you say JW4 and JW5 I think Jurassic World and now I have this imagine in my head of John Wick hunting down rogue Dinos. Fast and Furious 12: John Wick in a Transformer hunting Vin Diesel's crew down.

The story was a lot better when it was all a big joke about a dude going on a revenge murder spree because his dog was killed. Then it went entirely up its own rear end with nonsensical secret assassin fantasy world building and completely lost the plot. It’s just mediocre action porn that’s already been done better in other, better, movies, in some instances directly ripping them off I.e. The Villainess. And after 3 it’s clear Keanu’s getting up in age and losing a step. Watching dudes run into frame and get judo thrown to death is just tiring.

I actually prefer John Wick 2 to 1. The fight scene locations are just so much more ambitious and Ruby Rose and Common were cool antagonists. John Wick 3 was completely unnecessary with literally nothing changing from the ending of 2 and the ending of 3 except for Laurence Fishburne getting sliced up.
