It seems pretty obvious to me that the 23 Weeks of New Trek is specifically designed to stop people from pulling a "I'll wait until the entire season drops then do a free trial" mentality that I'm sure hurt their numbers for the two Disco seasons. No need to pirate when you can just wait a few weeks and get it all for free legally. But pulling the trigger on a subscription becomes a lot easier when you have to think 23 weeks into the future and realize that you'd get more value out of just paying a small monthly fee than having to re-learn how to pirate for the first time in a decade or wait half a year to pull the same free trial move.

Of course, now the former is moving to Netflix. I really liked the first episode of Lower Decks. It’s neat being able to watch what is effectively a Star Trek parody that doesn’t have to couch stuff in obvious Great Value versions of everything but just gets to straight up play with the Star Trek tool kit.

I'm pretty sure, after hearing from a Youtuber, that Youtube just recently changed their ad display policies with regard to mid-video ads. It used to be that normally, ads would run at the beginning of a video, and that creators could turn on mid-video ads. Youtube has changed the setting so that now the default, unless the creator changes it, is to run mid-video ads. They also did this retroactively, so that previous videos would get midvideo ads unless the creator turned it off. I get YouTube Red or Premium or whatever for free because I pay for Google Music, though having gone on YT not logged in and seen the amount of ads I doubt I could ever go back. Only thing that sucks is they're killing Google Play Music in favor of "Youtube Music" or something which will totally suck and I hate it already.

The main thing I use Google Music for is the ability to upload my own music collection and stream it. YT Music has that too, I'm currently uploading my collection, but the interface is way shittier, there's currently no way to manually edit tags/cover art, etc. I haven't tried the YT Music app yet, either, but I've heard it's way more bloated than the Google Music app, which is very straightforward and easy to use. Also, Google Music lets you download your uploaded songs back to any device, YTM doesn't. As someone who (used to anyway) travel for work a lot, being able to download a bunch of music right before a flight takes off was a really critical feature (my phone doesn't have expandable storage so I can't just load a 256gb SD card with all my poo poo on it).

Honestly surprised to be able to write this, but Lower Decks was rad as hell and I really enjoyed it. Bonus points for staying as far away from the dreadful Picard and awful STD as humanly possible. I actually want to see more episodes of Lower Decks rather than feeling like I'm just watching it due to some previously-good-Trek induced brain problem! My banana is hot.

Yea i dropped google play when I asked for "80s new wave" and it started playing the audio from a bunch of videos including the dialog. I do not want that poo poo. And I still got massive amounts of add with the free youtube premium. Weird.

So either I get my google music data in the app, or I get my youtube data in the app, and quite frankly I want neither now. I came very close to just saying gently caress it and hosting all my own music on Plex, at least that way I don't have to fidget with more and more subscription streaming apps. To bring this back to star trek: I watched Lower Decks last night, it seemed fine but kinda rough. Seeing LCARS again made me remember how much I hate the nu-trek design styles. There's that one character (I think played by Tawny Newsome) that seems to talk really fast, and it made me wonder if the episode was playing at 2x speed or if I'm just an old man who can't process information, slowly drifting towards an uncaring death. I'll probably wait for half the season to wrap up and then binge the episodes.

I think the whole zeitgeist in cartoons is just to be fast and throw a ton of jabber and jokes at you so I bet that aspect won’t change.

I definitely liked it more than Discovery or Picard. It felt nicer, even though it was maybe too silly. However I was a bit miffed at how american it all is, them making GBS threads on the lower decks people and forcing them to live in those tiny bunks doesn't really fit the socialist future to me. I'll still carry on watching it but it definitely falls into that "all the new treks are being like 21st century america" thing. The whole cast being north americans doesn't help this. Although I do like that Jerry o'connell is in it, that's so unexpected to me! And Dawnn Lewis who is in loads of things but specifically is LaBarbara from Futurama to me. Fred Tatasciore as big burly bajoran guy is good too, although it feels like he's that sorta character a lot. Rare to see him as a main star though instead of just incidental voices. We see bunks on the Enterprise in the TOS movies, and the Defiant has the same sort of cubbies. I don't remember ever seeing any on the D but that ship is also like a thousand times larger than necessary for its crew complement.

The Federation is not The Culture and Starfleet is broadly depicted as a military organisation that bears some resemblence to a current day equivalent, its certainly not an infinite resources utopia and the lower ranks sleeping in dorms on a starship seems pretty believable to me

The TNG Lower Decks episode, where we see Ensign Lavelle and Taurik's shared quarters, Voyager's episode Flashback, where we see Tuvok as an ensign on the Excelsior, where he gets annoyed with his bunkmate because he keeps talking when Tuvok wants to sleep. Here's a copy of crew bunks on the Excelsior from The Undiscovered Country:  You can also see pictures of quarters on board the Defiant from DS9 in the episode "The Sound of Her Voice", which are pretty small and have bunkbeds. So while nothing we've seen is as extreme as the Lower Decks show's making ensigns sleep in bunks in the hallway, shared quarters for junior officers and crew is certainly a thing in past Star Treks. It's just, since the shows focus on the senior officers, when we see pictures of officer's quarters, they're usually senior officer's quarters, which tend to be pretty spacious. From a practical standpoint, it's better to film on a big set rather than a small one. You can get cameras and other equipment in their easier, the actors can move more comfortably, and so on.
