Great timing because I just got a bunch of other animations that were in that same folder. Most of the humans were called Link1, Link2, etc. or WALKMAN. The red thing is "HART" and the bat/bird is "Pueerano"

I assume that all the big stuff has probably been found now (unless there is like a design document hidden somewhere), but I imagine there is some smaller cool stuff to be found. Also, I heard speculation that that there might be even more stuff that is going to be leaked, but I dunno if that is credible or not.

From those that know there is a lot more out there. Who knows when/if it will get released.

I don't recall Samus spontaneously growing a mustache.

I'm guessing that after Donkey Kong Country was in the works they were just trying to figure out what new direction to take the game and experimented with a few different ideas, including swapping the dude out for Mario.

Like why would Nintendo keep that stuff but not the ROM?

But that doesn't explain why Nintendo would keep a sprite sheet for bizarro Yoshi but not keep the actual game files. You'd think they'd either keep neither or both.

Nah. As a designer today, my WIP files are a mess of old junk that gets cleaned up and deleted in the final version.

There wasn’t great version control back then. The most likely scenario is that the code for that version of the game doesn’t exist anymore as it evolved to be SMW.

It is possible that a prototype cart exists still but it could have likely been overwritten as well.

Dip Viscous

They probably ditched the design before anything playable was made.

My understanding is that this leak is a dump of a CVS server, so in addition to being a huge mess of files, it's also the data to go back and look at every revision of each file as it was checked in during development.

The prototype definitely exists because Howard Phillips has said he has played it.

It would suck so bad if it was actually written over though.

"Hi Everybody!"
Data storage was a serious premium up until the early 2000's. A lot of source code is just gone because it would've been too bankruptingly expensive to store it all properly even for Nintendo.

Also isn't it Nintendo that kept paper copies of their old source code? That's where you'd find those builds, if so.

Truman Sticks
Nov 2, 2011
There's also a good chance that even if SMW's source code -was- originally backed up along with the other stuff we're seeing now, a bunch of the tapes were damaged and unreadable when they were dumped and it could just be lost to time. Or it's in the leak and nobody has found it yet.

Those prototypes were flashed onto rewritable carts so the chances that the cart Howard Philips played still has the same prototype rom burned onto it are incredibly slim. IIRC Phil Sandhop, the guy in charge of the Earthbound Beginnings localization, saw photos of the cart that was dumped as Earthbound Zero and confirmed that those internal use prototype carts were repurposed constantly.

As I understand it, the SNES/Gameboy stuff is a blend of an old CVS server and a mostly-failed attempt at digitising old tape backups (hence the really old stuff) while the N64 stuff is an intentionally-incomplete set of data (actual uncompiled source code was only sent as it was needed, hence most of the Zelda source files being empty) provided to iQue to localise games for the Chinese market.

Very cool. I wonder how the artists who made these unused sprites felt about their work being cut, because a lot of these leaked assets look very polished so I assume a lot of effort went into making them.

You think a tired & overworked Japanese sprite artist got to work one Monday morning in 1990 and found a memo on his desk that read "Miyamoto wants a duck statue in the village, get rid of the giant clamshell"?
