My great-grandfather was drafted into the US Army in World War 1 and he wasn't allowed to speak German which he was fluent in.

Nor could any of his relatives or Neighbors in the Iowa farm town hebcame from because it was now illegal.

German was the second most widely spoken language in the US for several generations, up until WWI propaganda made people act really lovely towards German-speaking Americans.

Chinese uses unique characters for each word (and Japanese uses some of these characters). I think average educated Chinese people typically know somewhere around 10-20k characters (I could be wrong but it's thousands).

During the Cultural Revolution in the 50s, mainland China simplified many characters from their "traditional" forms but this was not adopted by Taiwan and Singapore. As a result, there are two ways to write SOME Chinese characters - simplified, used in China, and traditional, used in Taiwan/Singapore. Japanese kanji is very close to traditional but there are a few characters that are slightly different in Japanese. But for all intents and purposes, traditional.

Traditional is still used in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Singapore transitioned in the 70s.

One of my ancestors (according to my grandfather) was a Lutheran pastor who came from Germany in the late 1800s to central Texas to minister to a church in a town I don't remember.

According to family lore, he got off the train in town, and found a mule waiting to carry him to the family who was hosting him, but no guide or directions. When he asked how to get where he was going, he was told "Das Maultier kennt den Weg."

"The mule knows the way."

(Relying on Google Translate for the German, I only remember my grandfather's translation.)

A lot of that is a weird result of people not having any more knowledge of their origins than a few generations. They're all Appalachia which is a weird blend of English and Scots-Irish, plus just about every other kind of pasty European, but most of the families have been dirt poor from the beginning and while they have really strong familial ties they also don't have any conception of their origins beyond that. "American" is as good an origin as any when you're basically a mutt

Also yeah lots of racism but :welp:

Ugh, the other day my mom posted an article (well, a bad screenshot of an article) on Facebook about how Fauci was lying because this old study on a different drug on a different virus in primate cells and not even living things showed promise.

Today it was an article about how European experts said masks do nothing for COVID-19. And my brother liked it. Both of them just got a silent fake news report from me since I just don’t want to deal with it.

It triggered this moment of, “has my family ALWAYS been this stupid, or did they just get brain poisoned by Fox News?”

I swear, if they still lived in New York and hadn’t moved to Wyoming years ago, they probably would have all caught it by now.

Granted Fauci has been really irresponsible. Throwing out the first pitch for the MLB season was a bizzarely stupid move and undermines peoples confidence in believing him.

That said its less about him and more about believing what is most convenient for them.

yeah. part of it is, in a sane admin, we wouldnt even be hearing much from him because the president would be giving some generic unity speech and let the scientists do their thing. its a mix of fauci being the sane one in the room and the chuds and the new age fuckers making him out to be the great Satan.

Yeah, my parents I can understand - dad was a cop and racist in that quiet Northeastern way and mom forwarded me every fake virus alert email until I started reply all-ing with Snopes links.

My brother though... He's in his late 30s, and he was always kind of an rear end in a top hat, but to people he had a personal beef with. He followed them out to Wyoming after a career crisis that just made him worse, got real into guns and hunting and posting forwards from 2nd amendment groups, and spent most of his time drinking and being belligerent enough that he was scaring his wife and kid and she had to kick him out of the house and serve him with divorce papers.

Though his wife is a teacher, and when they came to visit she started complaining about how the Native Americans in the area will send people to the local public schools when they have perfectly good schools on the reservation, and when my wife said something about reservations not being known for having a lot of resources she just kept going. Maybe living in a deep red state just messes you up too.

Right-wing propaganda has demonized entitlements, blaming them for the budget deficit, in order to turn people against social security and Medicare

It worked, boomers now hate "entitlement spending" but they like social security and Medicare. But because they are stupid, instead of realizing entitlements are stuff they like and therefore entitlement spending is good, they just decided stuff they like can't be entitlements

Yup. Entitlements are things that we're entitled to because we paid into them, but propaganda has changed the meaning to "something bad entitled people force us to do"

Yeah, it's that disconnect where they don't like the word Entitlements, because that's a bad word for lazy millennials. But, then they'll turn around and talk about how much they love their Social Security and whatnot.

Same thing with socialism. If you show someone an itemized list of things the socialists want, they'll be all "Hey yeah, that's great!", but as soon as you say the "S" word, they freak out.

Eh they don't usually like the itemized lists either. "Free at point of access healthcare" means that people who don't "deserve" it or didn't "earn" it are getting medical care.

  • god said to remove the log from your own eye (aka ~black on black crime~) so you can remove the speck from your brother's eye (police brutality)

Yeah this is one of those instances where their malice overcomes their ignorance. That's why it's kinda lose-lose with Republicans on socialist policies. They either don't know what they are or they sort of know and don't like them anyway.

God, the stupid-rear end discourse surrounding HQC is so depressing. I wasn't expecting "Trump reveals one weird trick to cure COVID! Apparently a third of us think "Well a doctor gave it to some people and they got better, and then got in front of microphones to tell us!" is rigorous science.

Where did that come from in the first place?

Like for most of human existence the extended family or clan was the natural grouping in many cultures, and the American nuclear family only really came about with industrialization and principally remained stable only with a poo poo ton of state support.

This is one of those "white Jesus invented the perpetual 50s in black and white which is what the world was from its creation 5780 years ago by (also white) God until the Civil Rights Act invented feminism and marijuana" things, isn't it?
