A lot of manga that got released in the US in the 90’s got mirrored. It’s a weird decision that newer re-releases undo.

Does mirroring cause composition issues or is it just better because it's faithful to the original?

It's easier to read if you grew up reading everything left to right. Especially if you're now an adult and not capable of learning new skills as quickly as kids. Reading comics is a skill that takes practice, my parents have trouble with comics that aren't basic grid designs like Watchmen.

I honestly believe that part of the huge manga boom among teenagers/preteens in the first decade of the 21st century was because right to left manga was more difficult for grownups to read.

When you flip manga pages, suddenly everyone's left handed and driving on the opposite side of the road. And oops now a lot of signage has to be redrawn along with the hero's iconic English shirt. Some releases would keep individual panels the same to help with that sort of thing, which can in fact mess with pageflow and composition. It's a lot of extra work.

Or you could just not do any of that and it turns out you'll still sell volumes by the truckload.

They flipped them because they wanted to appeal a wider audience of mostly kids, and thought it'd limit them if they didn't. Considering people show up roughly monthly to throw a fit about reading manga in the panels threads still, seems pretty reasonable assumption at the time that mercifully has died out.

depends on the comic. There are some where it messes up the composition and scenes, plus, you also have to fix the onomatopeia, signs and other stuff. Other times, it doesn't make a difference.

Speaking of Spider-Man and that movie, I think Peter and Gwen either talked about going or did actually go and see I Am Curious (Yellow) back when they were dating.

There’s a famous manga, Parasyte, where the main character’s right hand and forearm get possessed by what’s best described as an alien shapeshifter. He names it “Migi”, which means “right”. It was mirrored when it was initially released in the US and caused some problems when he worried about his dominant right hand being possessed when it was his left

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Am_Curious_(Yellow)

There was a period where some porn movies would get wide releases and notices in the mainstream press. It's not like you know, you'd take your kids to the drive-through to watch L.A. Tool and Die after Little League or whatever, but hip and intellectual people made a point of openly talking about seeing sexy movies in a way that hadn't really happened before, especially following the release of Andy Warhol's Blue Movie in 1969. You had things like Johnny Carson talking about going to see Deep Throat, William Friedkin and Roger Ebert very warmly reviewing The Devil in Mrs. Jones, and Variety even covering the important gay porn movie Boys in the Sand. The New York Times wrote an article in 1973 that dubbed this new trend "porno chic," and the name stuck. Bigger releases meant bigger box office returns which meant that porn studios with thin budgets suddenly had more money to play around with filming equipment, sets and costuming, screenwriters, etc., which meant even more lavish and "classy" looking movies for artsy folks to go check out at their local theater.

This bubble burst for a number of reasons. Miller v. California reframed American obscenity laws in a way that made it difficult to distribute these movies to communities with more chaste cultural standards, increases in production budgets didn't necessarily lead to increases in production time since male performers could only, uh, shoot so much per day, and as the 80s rolled around the spread of affordable home video technology as well as the increasing threat of HIV/AIDS pretty much killed off this era.

Anyway that's the context in which you have stuff like that Lois Lane cover (1970) and the famous panel of Gwen Stacy inviting Peter Parker to go see I Am Curious (Yellow) with her (1971). The writers of those two comics were, respectively, Robert Kanigher and Roy Thomas--- guys who had an interest in comics being hip, contemporary, and appealing to swinging young adults.

One night, Gerry and his friends discovered a mattress stuffed with money in the yard. They agreed their lives were spent and decided to finally make Rory rich. Unfortunately, the gangster who hid the mattress came to get it and held them at gunpoint. Immediately after, he was killed by the other gangsters he stole the money from. Not knowing where the money was hidden, these gangsters also held the men at gunpoint demanding the location of the money. Gerry and his pals held their tongues even when the gangsters shot down the power lines on top of them. Rory arrived and tried to pull them out, each man locking hands in a human chain. The electricity surged through them, grounding out through Rory. The gangsters departed believing they had all been killed.

Rory, however, survived never knowing of the fortune hidden in his junkyard. He did find that the strength and abilities of each man had been transferred into him at their deaths. Rory now possessed the strength of a circus strongman, the skills of a former heavyweight boxer, and the agility of a prize-winning acrobat. Rory also found a note from his father along with tattered costume. Although Gerry intended the costume be worn to a costume party, Rory used to to fight crime.[1]

I hate that I know that that's a reference to a really stupid Boba Fett EU book where he works with a big lizard dude who has had his head replaced with a rail gun. It's nowhere near as cool as it sounds.
