An offhanded comment in a video about lost media I was watching youtube recently made me think about late night TV in the 90s. I know it existed in the 80s, but A) I was a much younger in the 80s and wasn't allowed to stay up ever and B) A lot of stations still went off the air at midnight then. The 90s is when they started programming all night. You had the tonight show and Conan and letterman and that show that was on after Conan, was it with Bob Costas? Also Arseino Hall is pretty much forgotten these days. Late Late show was a much more indepth talk show like Charlie Rose.

But it was the stations that didn't have big late night talk shows or after those were over, that things got interesting. Being a teenager you quickly learned that your best chance of seeing boobs was the late night movies that local stations showed. Maybe you'd see Porky's, or Ski School or some other boob comedy, though this also resulted in watching movies you'd never see otherwise because you're like "well, maybe this will have some boobs in it too" and you end up watching Brazil or Delicatessen.

One of my favorite late night shows was Night After Night with Allan Havey. He had this gimmick that was an "audience of one" where it was literally just a single audience member. He would do prank calls, which I normally absolutely hate, but my favorite bit of his, and the only one I remember to this day, was he called a phone sex line.
"I want you to eat pancakes with me."
"Okay, we're eating pancakes."
"I want you to tell me I've got the tallest stack in the place."
"Oh, yeah, baby. You've got the tallest stack."
"Now I want you to pour syrup all over my pancakes."
"Oooo, I'm pouring warm syrup all over those pancakes."
"Ohhhh that's nice. Yeah. What kind of syrup is it?"
"Maple."
"I HATE MAPLE SYRUP!"
And hung up.

Remember when Cinemax and Showtime used to air softcore at night? We moved the old tv and vcr into my room when we got a new setup, so I would record stuff like Red Shoe Diaries and whatever TV Guide said contained nudity. One time I got lucky and got three softcore movies on one tape that were absolute breast and bush showcases - one of the Emmanuelle movies, one featuring a tortured artist and his distant wife and an Asian girl causing all kinds of marital havoc, and one I can't even remember. I spent a whole school year duplicating that tape and selling it to other kids at school for :10bux: a pop.

The only time I got caught was when a friend's dad said "Hey, you the one with that tape? Not bad, but watch this," and popped in a tape of Deep Inside Nikki Dial, and that was the end of my interest in late-night softcore.

E. I also wound up recording stuff like that straight-to-video Guyver sequel that was actually kinda good, so my youth wasn't a total loss.

Yea I did that, Emmanualle's where the Holy Grail for the Finest Erotic Cinema Europe Can Provide Ooh La La, but never bothered to think about selling them. Though I mean, everyone had the French Channel or Showcase in Canada so it wasn't a thing. The French Channel, or TQS, also showed sexy French TV shows that where pretty good in those pre internet days.

They never showed Tinto Brass movies though, which made me realized the Italians were way hornier than the French.

Between looking for boobs, it also let me watch Silver era SNL, so when the show was probably at the height of its creativity and popularity i got to enjoy Waynes World and Massive Headwound Harry.

Yeah, this was 90's rural Oklahoma, fap fodder could be difficult to find. There are still whole categories of porn in that state considered obscene and illegal to sell. My tape was like manna from heaven for horny highschoolers.

I did borrow that tape of Deep Inside Nikki Dial with the intention of duping it to sell, but copy protection defeated me. Probably a good thing, because being caught selling hardcore porn by an irate parent could have had actual legal consequences.

e. I should also mention my younger brother, the porn king. Through a series of swapping stuff, fast talk, and dumb luck, he wound up with a fairly sizable hardcore tape collection by the time he was 15, and he did the even smarter thing - he rented it out instead of selling it.

For whatever reason I think the ideal summer for me will always be 1994. We had cable for the first time since I was 5, and while forbidden to watch MTV, especially Beavis and Butthead I just waited until my parents went to bed then watched MTV all loving night long.

Also the rare occasions when I was home alone, I got to watch the MTV beach house which usually involved Daisy Fuentes in a bikini.

How is this any different than Dave and Buster’s, also a very 90s place to go and a relic of the 90s.

It's not really. The one in Indianapolis wasn't even that far from where the Dave and Busters is now.

The Block Party in Indianapolis had real video games and pinball. It’s where I played a lot of Mortal Kombat, and my mom played Centipede.

The only thing Dave & Busters has is redemption games.

There’s another “entertainment center” near the former Block Party site that has the same crappy games as D&B but also bowling.

I have a very distinct memory of watching MTV and they were having a beach house Swimsuit contest hosted by Gilbert Godfrey and it was just nothing but butts on both the ladies and the dudes.

I also remember him having a glass of apple juice or something else golden and going "and here's my favorite part of the contest, the urine test!" and downs it "Ah she's got too little fiber in her diet! Too much protein!" Which I only just realized is probably a joke about blowjobs.

Like, I get what you’re referencing, but I don’t recall it originating from one specific show or movie or something like that. It just seemed an evolution of the exact same hand gesture and saying “crazy” or “cuckoo bird” or whatever which I remember from old Bugs Bunny cartoons and whatnot going back to the 40’s.

Random cans of coke would have a device in them that would eject either a gift certificate or cash when opened. Problem was, they didn't always work and some unsuspecting person would get a mouthful of what tasted like public pool water rather than coke: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MagiCan

There was a stand-alone Mechwarrior place on North Pier in Chicago. Thats al it was, go there and sit in a pod and pilot your mech. They also had a second part, same cannon I guess, where you raced "cars" (like F-Zero I guess) but you only did that while waiting for the line to shorten to pilot a MadCat again.

Yea I feel like if I was a bit younger, or that it was on in Canada at the time I'd have enjoyed it.

I like how she points out that Clarissa was shown to have a computer and it was not considered strange or made her a nerd, it was just something she did. And now having a computer is still seen to be be the sign of a nerd these days.

I never felt like Clarissa was girl-coded or whatever. She was just a weirdo teen with ex-hippie-turn-yuppie parents that were probably into tantric yoga and smoked too much weed.

Whatever suburban-near-city life Clarissa had was too divorced from my reality to be seen as anything other than fantastical. But it was a drat good show and I'm glad it made uptight male execs poo poo their pants.*

Fergbrain was like a lovely Alex P. Keaton and that shitlord would likely have a Ben Shapiro-like show now.
