Literally: a wizard did it

They also blatantly change the way the telephone platform worked (4 light aliens shooting star jizz at it) and just never talk about it aside from a really lame they, uh, turned the saltwater plant into a super atomic reactor yeah sure ok.

Morgan just isn't an interesting villain despite Hurley's heavy lifting, and S3 is more like "hey our parents are murderers but ya know they had stuff to work out"

Mancha would have been something. Did Tesladad build him, was he made by Chase and sent back into the past, was he actually an Ultron bud, etc. Ah well.

I got a ping for a new review from an old reviewer I've been following over the years, because when he does recommend something it's really good. And what ya know, he just did today.

It's about Pulp, from Brubaker + Phillips, a short GN about early 30's New York, but also about the late 1890 period. An amazing mix of noir and western. Check it out if you are looking for some non-cape stuff.

I was talking with a buddy and I think I've read all of the Brubaker and Phillips stuff I ever need to. It's all great, but I'm just not that into crime drama. Between Criminal, Fatale, and Incognito, I have more of their collections than I have volumes of anything else (Hellboy, Sandman, Bone, etc). That's not counting the several series that were in the recent Humble Bundle.

I'm really interested in that period where mass culture was beginning to really pin down a structure for romanticizing "the West" as a reified, generic ideal, and especially all the work that pulp and dime novels did in that process, so I'll check this out!

My advice for finding artists is just to follow every comic artist you like because they will often rt and/or like other artists works. Also I've found that when you follow someone and it gives you recommended follows, for artists at least the people it recommends generally aren't poo poo. It's how I've found a lot of the queer artists I follow

Yeah, I should follow more people that get retweeted. Good advice.

I probably shot myself in the foot a bunch cause other than following people ten years when I first signed up, I hadn't used Twitter until the last few years and the artists I've followed since then have been mostly for political reasons, and now they all post about politics!

Maybe I should log back into Deviant Art...

Adding to this: your recommended follows are also affected by accounts you've recently viewed, so even if you've only browsed some artists' stuff you might still find some good potential follows in there.

Just grab a big stack if comics that you own and like the art of and start checking if the artists are on twitter.

You might add some writers too, because they'll tweet pages from stuff they're working on and also retweet stuff from their artist friends and previous collaborators.

That reminds me of years ago when my friend was doing fetish art for commissions. One guy had him draw a specific pose showing off a lady's feet. We were walking through C2E2 and he came across another artist in Artist Alley with a very similar print for sale. Turns out they were both hired by the same guy!

Given they now have AT&T over their shoulder I expect our 'good' is not their 'good.' And Bob Harras at least doesn't seem to have been doing much for the company for a while.

Earlier this year when I was worried about comic shops not surviving, I was just thinking about how they'd get through the lockdowns and deal with reduced demand. It didn't occur to me that they were also going to have less stuff to sell as companies close departments and end product lines to save money.

I’m imagining stores going out of business, but for the ones that stick around, sure. They’ll still have a back issues, they’ll still sell marvel and image stuff and a billion gross badly drawn barely porn comics.

How much of that is due to the insane single issue pricing on digital comics? I buy a lot of DC's "Digital first" range, because they're £0.80 each and it's a no thought impulse purchase at that point.

I'm not saying they all have to be that cheap, but they should absolutely be cheaper than the paper comics.

Marvel doesn't release numbers for digital sales, but there's some books that we're pretty sure did really sell in digital sales (Ms Marvel, Moon Girl) that also had print releases and the digital copies cost the same as the print, so I don't think price point is nececessarily the issue.

How much does it cost Marvel to print a 24 page comic and ship it to a retailer? Does anyone have a close estimate?

Diamond sells a single $2.99 book to retailers for $1.34. That's as far as anyone really knows.

Don't retailers have to pay some small amount for Free Comic Book Day books? That's probably close to cost for printing.

Although yeah the bigger difference between digital and print is probably less the printing costs and more not having to cut retailers in. I doubt Comixology takes over half the cover price, I know you can get up to 70% of the cover price via self-publishing on Amazon.
