And up here where I am, people don't give the slightest gently caress about masks. All the big box stores have rules about having masks but there are still people inside them without them and no one is stopping them at the door. I live in the same state that horrifying school picture came from, with tons of kids smashed together and only half of them wearing masks and no one enforcing it.

I think the problem is that you correctly identify this as a pipe dream:

chitoryu12 posted:

Because here's the thing: it would be great if we could just shut everything down for a few months and have the government fund everyone and every business to remain open until this poo poo dies, but that's not going to happen.

But not this:

chitoryu12 posted:

It's completely possible for businesses and schools to make the necessary compromises to continue operating under the current circumstances. Theme parks, restaurants, bars, etc. maintain strict rules on masks and limited capacity while the government properly fines and revokes licenses from those who violate them, schools continue education through distance learning with minor class space for those who lack the setup to do online courses, etc.

This isn't an easy solution either. Obviously I'm spitballing a bit here, but if anything this sort of highly disciplined reopening is way, way harder. "gently caress everything shut it down" is a simple, binary concept, creates political circumstances that encourages payments to people (because you have a lot of people with nothing to do but protest, call their representatives, and learn to build guillotines), and requires relatively few people to act properly.

Meanwhile "open everything with strict mask wearing and social distancing guidelines with government backed enforcement" relies on a constellation of actors doing a specific dance to maximize public health. You need to figure out how to empower your front line, massively underpaid workers (because they're a front line worker in America) to walk up to someone wearing a red hat and a fishnet on their face and say "you have to leave," and you have to ensure that their manager is good backing them up.

On top of that, the careful method requires a level of agility we just aren't capable of, in a couple ways. You need to be able to rapidly spin up and spin down the economy based on community conditions. "Yesterday you said eggs were bad for us" is still a running joke in most of America, I have little to no faith the public will buy into the idea of businesses opening and closing based on things they cannot see. This lack of buy in from the public makes enforcement and compliance that much harder. We also just don't have the intelligence needed to react in anything resembling a rapid fashion. There is literally no national tracing system (which is going to be real awkward in a week when everyone goes home from Sturgis) and obviously state systems vary wildly in quality. Also, depending on where you live, it might take a week to get a test back, which makes them effectively useless in preventing community spread.

Yeah, I get that I just said both of the most obvious solutions are pipe dreams. To be clear - I strongly believe we are completely and totally hosed from this disease. Given where we started this thing, I literally do not think there is a politically and practically viable solution that prevents constant death/misery. Eat Arbys.

On one hand, people have to go back to work because Mitch McConnell has decided that people, organizations, and even local/state governments should face destabilizing failure if they don't. On the bright side, though, America isn't the only country on earth. Tokyo Disneyland cancelled Christmas but is operating fine. Japan is mostly operating fine. New Zealand has things open. It is not perfect. Though NZ has cases down to basically zero, they can not have any international travel whatsoever and are basically now an island isolated, but people can go outside there and live their lives like before.

Disney World is actually in a pretty good position on paper, because to many Americans domestic travel is considered tourism. However the reality is that nearly all the big USA tourist states (Florida, Nevada, California, Hawaii) are currently on everybody else's 14-day quarantine list. While enforcement is shoddy and punitive measures are rare, the state is basically asking you to not work for the next 14 days following your return home, if you don't have a work-from-home job.

The lack of federal response is the problem here. In the short-term, it would be in the benefit of tourist-driven states to work with the states they pull the largest share of tourism from to maintain similar rules and policies, so that someone who is in one state can enter another and come back without needing to quarantine. Between the tourism market and the retirees, I have to imagine New York sends a lot of visitors to Florida. So if New York is making everyone wear masks, then Florida has an economic interest in doing the same regardless of what the local voters think.

But the on paper is where it stops. And those maskless, air-conditioned "rest areas" are absolutely not okay. We have evidence that there is significant spread within restaurants and such, so they just casually opened Akershus as a mask rest area while the ac blows potential infection everywhere. Sure, the tables are spaced out, but some models are showing that it doesn't matter how much you space those tables out.

If we had a decent treatment for this thing, not even necessarily a vaccine, I'd be so much more relaxed about this. But we really don't.

Not sure I buy this. Lots of countries that aren't anti-intelligence or science skeptical have reopened restaurants, and they haven't been the problem other facilities (nursing homes especially) have been. Although you have some unusual regulations like the Netherlands apparently limiting restaurants to 30 guests regardless of it's size.

The only places that have beaten the virus have a social safety net in place. The US can't beat the virus with masks and social distancing alone, and we have no social safety net.

Keep in mind that at all times we are 4-6 weeks away from beating the pandemic. It would require a shutdown. It would require getting a national test and trace program up and running during the shutdown. It would require faster tests. We cannot follow the model of the rest of the world without shutting down to crush the virus first.

Maybe this seems impossible now but with growing unrest, expired unemployment benefits, and an eviction crisis looming, it could become the more palatable option.

I think all the Chinese and Japanese joints are closed except for Katsura.

Looking at the others listed..

Marrakesh is closed. Is Spice Road Table a decent substitute for that?

I'll check out the menu on Napoli. I don't know if we're going to want Italian.

Coral Reef menu didn't wow me. I assume you're here more for the atmosphere?

The fish and chips stand is closed, but the restaurant is open. I did want to try the fish. I'll put this on my list.

Le Cellier is on my list already. I'm down for steak.

Spice Road is still good, but it's certainly no Marrakesh (for my money, the best restaurant at WDW).

I thought the menu was much better many years ago, early 2000's era. But yes, I still go to see the fishies.

Honestly? Le Cellier has good food, but I haven't seen or had anything there that I couldn't get for a similar or cheaper price from a quality steakhouse in just about any city. It also feels much more crowded than your typical local spot. This is an issue I have with a lot of the "upscale" restaurants around Disney.

Flying Fish is my best example of this. It offers excellent, high-end seafood. Seriously, some of the best I've ever had, preparation and presentation wise. The service and decor in the restaurant definitely feels upscale. There's even a dress code (which is only marginally enforced, but still).

The problem is, they slam-packed in twice as many tables as you'd normally see at this level of restaurant anywhere else. Add in that the diners are all excited about being on vacation (OMG DISNEY!!!), and a much higher-than-normal instance of children than you'd typically see at a high-end restaurant, and... oof. What could be a unique and quality dining experience feels more like Friday night at your local Cheesecake Factory.

Last time I was there, my wife and I couldn't have a conversation without screaming it, and neither of us could hear the sommelier or server -- both of which independently got our orders wrong because they couldn't hear us either.

So, bummer. Go to WDW for the food, but don't worry too much about the atmosphere, unless you're doing something specifically Disney like Be Our Guest.

we really like Rose & Crown, Les Chefs de France, Coral Reef, that place inside Mexico, Les Halles Boulangerie....the pizza place in italy.

We're hoping the German buffet changes back to menu.

I don't think we'd ever go to Le Cellier. I can eat steak anywhere.

I've probably spent five hours just sitting on hold with Disney since Monday trying to get my AP refund. Every time it just disconnects or I simply don't have time to wait any longer.
