Do you have a separate "office" and/or do you use a different set of hardware to work than to play?

If you answered "no" to either, you should fix that. Separating work from home life is incredibly important for many people. If you're in the same chair, at the same desk, using the same computer for everything, it's no wonder you get tired of it.

Not currently, which is absolutely contributing to the malaise. We're in the process of putting the house up for sale, so it's spotlessly clean and in "do not touch" mode, which means I have the office and that's it. In a few months I'll have a new place and hopefully have room for a "work" office. Fingers crossed.

For now it's not that bad really. I spent some time in the yard, then took off to the Colo for a couple hours.

Some old coworkers sent me videos of their most recent Zoom meeting in which he could be seen sitting in his office, furiously pumping weights at his desk with an extremely intense but still somehow blank and distant look on his face. As the conversation about how to proceed grew more heated, he threw the dumbbell a few feet behind him and got up and walked away. He didn't show back up for three more days.

A student sent me an email asking how to get the network ports in the dorm rooms working. I told them to send in a request to IT because they have to be connected on a per room basis due to limited switch space. The student told me they already had, and that the new TC came to their room, looked blankly at the wall ports, said "Eeeehhhhhhhhhhh uhhh oh ehhh mmmm" and then walked out of the building and never came back.

Everything is beautiful. Absolutely gorgeous.

The tech in question also has to be regularly reminded how to create a local user account, and recently sent in an email asking us to make sure a user's name wasn't misspelled in the description on a laptop that the tech already has physical possession of.

Said tech has the ability and access to fix that his own drat self.

Voice commands are handy and I like them. I chose the Google option a while back, so unless I see reason to think someone is better I'll stick with them.

Also, Cortana on my Android phone seems dumb, and if I want voice control its usually because my hands are full of, say, car parts because I do things that aren't in front of the computer

I never did find a use for speech controls (sorry, having to repeat my commands over and over and try to correct the fuckups is more frustrating than putting poo poo down or pulling over and just using my drat hands), but I did poo poo up my friend’s new Xbone+Kinect by shouting, “hey Xbox, search boobs” whenever no one else was talking.

Having to repeat yourself is the product of three things. Not training the device to your speech (and retraining every 3 months or so), accents, and slurring.

I never noticed I slur my speech when I don't think about it until I figured out that it was causing my normal requests to not match the trained voice

I use them (button activated) for accessing common tasks that are fiddly, like setting reminders, alarms, and timers. I've never had a problem with either google's or apple's recognising my English accent, untrained.

When I had an apple watch I gave it a stress test by using it to add up a restaurant bill ("four pounds twenty nine plus twenty pounds thirty five plus..") at high speed in a very noisy restaurant with bad reception, and it didn't miss a beat.

Google assistant can never find music to play or do anything navigation related in my car, and that's my only time I would actually use it, so I never use it. I know cars are the worst place for voice recognition due to the generally poor quality of microphones in handsfree systems in cars, and the higher noise floor due to vehicle noises, but if it doesn't work in the most compelling environment to use it in, I'm not going to use it.

We haven't had that spirit here since 1969.

I'm just immensely sad that the Google voice recognition no longer responds to "What is the nature of the universe?" with "The universe is a spheroid region 705 meters in diameter." It made perfect sense, that's the next line from the episode, so it was the correct "answer" to the Google search and so that's what it read out to you. At some point like five years ago they fixed it and now it starts talking about actual cosmology. :(

its got less to do with background noise(which it is actually pretty good at dealing with) and more to do with your internet connect. voice recognition works by using the computing power of the cloud to figure out wtf you are saying, so is more sensitive to signal issues that mic issues

I think its a bit much to ask that the software be able to interpret ever accent and dialect, as spoken by every individual, without giving it a final pass to personalize it. Its on par with asking for bug free software: nice to wish for, but reality would disagree with it being common.

And as far as free training, we are already doing that, doing the specific training is literally saying "hey google" 3 times.

Huh. The best I get is my phone corrects "from" to "futon" every. Single. loving. Time. To the point where I use swype for most things and then stop and hunt/peck out "from" and the like 3 other words it can't seem to get right. At least it eventually learned that 99.5% of the time, no, I do not actually want to type the word "duck" or "ducking".

I've been having that a lot lately as well. In addition to the above, I've recently found that if I tap the letter i and then anything else, my phone tries to combine them into something completely different. So just simply inputting "i see" becomes "k", "use", or "is".
