LoL I watched some Star Citizen again, cause of a German mag article (Gamestar, the mag with the most rabid SC believers). I have been out of the loop for a while....so they took in 15 mill in May 2020 alone, selling the Idris and Javelin, none of them flyable? Isn't the Idris in the production pipeline since 2012? The whole capital ship sales pitch is mind boggling, there is not a single game in existence that properly simulates a space capital ship that you can walk in, has complex subsystems that can be operated by the player in a multiplayer environment and that has npcs going about their jobs and reacting to combat damage and battle situations. Creating a game that has a single capital ship operating on such a level would likely require the resources of a triple A game and several years of development. It's all so weird by now.

Has anybody explained to the backers that "data running" is moronic? Guess what guys? Even if there is no FTL data transmission in the "verse" light speed is still way faster than any of you dumb ships. B-b-but wormhole jumps, you say? Having a goddamn relay station next to a wormhole that simply receives the beamed data and then sends a data package to a station on the other side of the wormhole is still a billion times faster, cheaper, and more convenient than some dildo-shaped "data runner" taking 2 hours to reach anywhere of importance.

I think a game like that could be really good, but it would have to be only that stuff. Properly designed it would be rather unique, even if it didn't hold mass appeal. I can't think of a company less capable than CIG.

Shazback posted:More fun facts here Not sure how you'd multithread a single loop to begin with, that seems silly to me. If one loop iteration runs, but the other doesn't and you'd pass it to another thread, you'll be getting whole lot of pointless issues. What UE4 and newer do instead is run rendering in a separate thread ( https://docs.unrealengine.com/en-US/Programming/Rendering/ThreadedRendering/index.html ), which is IMO much more reasonable approach, because you keep stuff (and bugs!) separate, while getting increased performance. It's the usual CI development - they try to reinvent wheel, then run into stuff everyone else already encountered, call themselves revolutionaries and settle for a fraction of the performance of competition's solutions.

1) Lol at any of these made up things ever happening 2) News and events will be "streamed around the 'verse" 24/7 but also it's faster for data to be physically carted around like in an 80s cyberpunk novel. Also: quote:The reason for data runners is because Chris decreed there is no FTL transmission from system to system. Data has to be physically carried through jump gates and only transmitted by comms relays once it has arrived in system. Ships will carry information for interpersonal transactions (the mail), mas media, mass commerce, the news, intelligence gathering etc The list is endless, it has nothing to do with scarcity it has everything to do with perceived value. Space mailmen confirmed.

Because that 100% tracks with having lots of threads with interactions that you didn’t think through. There’s also fantastic odds that it’ll bite you on performance, so it really does sound like a classic CIG “solution”.
